Finally, the day has come to talk about something a lot of you requested - what is a good fertilizer for Hoyas? There is a lot that can be said about good quality fertilizers and others that are not worth the money (in my opinion) and it is a very complex topic. I will not dive in too deep here on all possible fertilizers, micro and macro nutrients, and what they do, but you should get a good overview of fertilizers after this video. I have also linked the material used for this video further in the description that can help you more on the fertilizer journey :)

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly poly fish heads. Sing this summer camp song with me!! I use a compost tea. I make my own compost using everything (paper, food scraps, left over meat, bones, dairy, expired medicines, expired vitamins, hair, left over anything…) It ain’t a science, but I figure it all breaks down. I take a handful of that, mix with water, filter, add some any kind of miracle grow, and spray!! So far so good…. Love this channel- hugs from California. Viva La Hoya (except for the lacunosa which haunts me).

I use an orchid misting fertilizer for my hoyas and it works well 👌 Back when I was looking for a treatment for flat mites I found out that it also has an ingredient that will ☠ flat mites. Can't remember what exactly the ingredient is called but the orchid spray is by Neudorff (german brand) if somebody wants to look it up

At what time do you apply it? :) Is it the only fertilizer you use? I am interested as I do not know when stomata on hoya are open.

Hi Miro, this is the best Summer Camp, EVER!! I have Hoya, Orchids, a few succulents and some pothos and philodendron in my collection and every one of them gets the same feed. I use MSU by Repot Me, CalMag Seaweed mixture and once a month a dose of Super Thrive!! And I give them all a flush with clean water about every other month. They seem to like!!

I give my hoyas the orchid fertilizer at the moment, but succulents and cacti need low nitrogen so they are getting their fertilizer and philodendrons probably need higher nitrogen so my one will get the regular liquid fertilizer on the weekend. I have maybe 100 succulents, I used to have over 300 and they need to be grown low and slow to get that compact growth with good colouration.

I think as long as fertilizer is within a certain reasonable range for NPK than your pretty much fine. Trace elements are a tricky subject but it’s not the end of the world because tap water or mineral additives for aquarium water can work great too! I use three types of fertilizer. I use Maxsea fertilizer for mostly just carnivorous plants but I will use it on any other plants I own if I feel it could benefit them. Also works as a foliar fertilizer spray. I also use osmocote indoor outdoor as my go to but it might be getting replaced my Dynamite cacti and succulent fertilizer. I’ve use it on a few of my cacti and succulents as well as Hoyas and have noticed a significant improvement. My publicalyx silver splash has absolutely exploded with growth this summer. Same with some of my aloes and a few of my cacti. Such as my peanut cactus.

Same Hoya types have different needs depending on each one’s individual living , conditions, sometimes they need more of “this” and other times more of “that “ but overall is the common needs according their species
@BasiePlants

Yes :) Some do get more specific and more hungry, but most of mine get the same care really.

I remembered you mentioning that you used orchid fertilizer so ever since my Hoya journey over a year ago, I’ve been using the msu k-lite formula. although I have nothing else to compare them to, my Hoyas seem to be very happy overall. Tried the misting thing for a month and didn’t notice anything besides having some white residue on my leaves so I stick to fertilizing during watering.

Firstly: big fan. Secondly: I'm a hoya newbie (like a newborn baby, actually), but in my few months of collecting hoyas, the only "fertilizer" I use is water from my fish tank (side note: I've transfered most of my hoyas in pon). All (15 different species) are growing nicely - I even got my first bloom from my subquintuplinervis. The only "slow grower" is a lacunosa that I have in the office since the beginning (and the only one not being watered with fish tank water). So I'm thinking to continue watering with my fish tank water which I religiously collect - and maybe add on some orchid spray with more K for blooms?

Hello Miro, Thank you for the very informative video. In the last two days I was exactly looking for this... because I imported Hoya-Cuttings from Finnland (H. IR-26, H. NS 05-055 and H. sp. walliniana) - and I'm new to Hoya care 😊. For my Orchids I also use 'Rain Mix' (and you're right - it's from 'Akerne Orchids', Belgium). I set the EC value of the nutrient solution for orchids to about 400 to 500 mcS/cm (with distilled water) - which one do you use for your Hoyas? Slightly lower at 350 to 400 mcS/cm? I'd like to keep the Hoyas in inorganic substrat (LECA or Pon) in self-watering pots. I like your videos so much... your humor is very refreshing 😅😊 Many greetings Susanne
@nenee009
@nenee009 Год назад
hoyas need more nutrition than orchids so the EC should be higher

You are far more dedicated than I am :D It has been discussed on orchid channels in relation to stomata and when they are open, and how it *can* be perhaps beneficial, but I essentially think you can make your own at home with fertilizer + water if cost is a concern and have the same effect :)

@traceykusser368 Год назад
Once a month I try to remember to add liquid fertilizer to the pond water (yes, fish poop) I use to water the majority of my plants in their growing season. I do have some plants that require distilled water. I use slow release fertilizer specifically meant for Monstera and also Ficus. I think everyone has a different experience growing plants, and that old saying, “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” I don’t ever recommend skinning a cat! But to each his own. ❤
@BasiePlants

I don't mind people using aquarium or pond water. It is not something I would or can do. My plants and I share one bedroom that is less than 20 square meters. I once used all natural vitamin that is added to water for plants and my room smelled like a pig sty for days :D So I have to be wary of those things. In different scenario I wouldn't care.

Just making sure I understand. So when using pon you make the ph more acidic. Do you fertilize at the same time or alternate? How often do you water with the ph solution?
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants Год назад
I always add the pH down to my water since the starting poing of my tap/RO water is over 8.0; lava rock and pumice are pH neutral and zeolite is slightly alkaline. I am not sure if Lechuza adds anything to control the pH, but since I make my own pon, that is all there is in it - making it pH neutral. Hoyas prefer to grow in slightly acidic mediums (6-6.5), so I pH down my solution with every watering :)

Witch fertilizer, indeed. Eye of newt, and all that. If you love them and do something that works, well, have at-r. Okay, so clovers (oxalis) and I are not roomies. Period. My old Mama Hoya gets a spritz once or twice when she's doing bloom, and it is beyond knowing whether it is working or not. All year care seems to be sufficient for the creative period.🥰
