SF2 is the king of fighting games if we're talking about genre defining. It's the reason the genre is how it is. Beyond it MK1 deserves to be on that pedestal for influencing game ratings. Tekken 3 showed what fighting games are capable of visually. Marvel 2 has one of the most enduring legacies. SF4 brought SF and the Fighting Game Community back in a big way. A sleeper mention would be KOF94, the first crossover fighter and led to the indirect creation of Smash Bros. Guilty Gear I'm most impress by because it's quite literally the brainchild of a single guy.

VF3 was the groundbreaking 3-D fighting game that showed what 3-D was capable of, not Tekken 3. VF3 had realistic clothing movement, eyes that tracked your opponent, flexing muscles, uneven stages, etc. It came out in '96 and was completely mind blowing, way ahead of it's time, and truly something to behold. it was called "the most astounding display of video game graphic muscle ever in the history of this industry." by Computer and Videogames Magazine. Tekken 3 came out afterwards and didn't look nearly as good. VF3 was so advanced it couldn't be ran on a console until '98-'99 with the Dreamcast.

Smash is it's own thing, inventing it's own genre really. It took some inspiration but made something that isn't like any other fighting game, there is no skill translation between these KoF, SF etc. and smash. KoF is still much more similar to SF II than smash is similar to KoF, again if you're good at KoF it translates to being good at SF for a large degree

SF2 is definitely the game that started me on fighting game. Back it was still on SNES and I had to go to my friend house to play. It was the first one that uses motion input instead of dedicated button to do special move. I even bought a 3DO just to play the Super Street Fighter II Turbo much later on. My second favorite was Soul Calibur series. Parrying was very satisfying on that game. Too bad there wasn't online play back then on PS2. I would like to test my Maxi online. There was no one at my house that plays so I was just fighting computer. When my brother in-law came by, I kinda beat him pretty badly as he doesn't play much of it and he doesn't want to play me anymore.

Agreed. The replay value was enough for SSF2T to last many years to this day, but between 1993 - 1995: NOTHING was touching Mortal Kombat II. And for those who was gaming in the arcades back then, by the time Super Turbo was released, it really didn't get played much. It was mainly MKII followed by Killer Instinct and to a smaller extent, Samurai Shodowns I and II. People were just tired of the SFII retreads. Critics were even joking that Capcom couldn't count to "three" while MKII was raking in the quarters and getting mainstream attention for better or for worse. But Super Turbo definitely persevered over the years; much like 3rd Strike.

These guys didn’t understand what they were discussing. They were discussing the impact of the two specific games listed and for some reason they thought it had to do with the entire franchise. MK2 has a far bigger impact than Super street fighter 2 turbo which was not nearly as impactful as World warrior or hyper fighting. MK2 generated the most money than any arcade MK game, super turbo actually was considered somewhat of a disappointment in the arcade in terms as even new challengers generated more money than it, (in North America not sure about everywhere else) hence why for years the only home console port of the game was on the freaking 3do.

Bushido Blade was sick. Such an original concept and brought a new level of realism to fighting games that still hasn't been matched. In fact, it was more realistic than the vast majority of sword fighting films, anime, comics, or video games. The concept of the one hit kill to the head and torso, and the injuring of limbs was awesome and I'd love to see a current gen version where you actually lop off arms and legs and heads, and with the fighting and controls more fluid. It turned sword fights into what they were in reality; more akin to a western style duel where the first to fire on target typically wins, instead of the fencing matches we're used to seeing.

TALK TO THEM
@dmg4535
@dmg4535 2 года назад
Bushido blade is very sick but this idea that real sword fights were more akin to a western duel isn’t true at all man haha. You can look to both eastern and European HEMA, which both have numerous historical texts that depict the many techniques, types of parries and ripostes, stances, as well as hand to hand techniques in the instance that you get disarmed. This seems to imply that confrontations could often be drawn out (especially in regard to the armoured Europeans) as opposed to the “1,2,3 boom someone dies” of the Western duel. Surprisingly enough it actually is more close to a fighting game, spacing and punishing your opponent when they overextend. You’re right in the sense that they die in one hit tho hehe. No hate brudda just a huge medieval dork lmao
@augustgreig9420
@augustgreig9420 2 года назад
@@dmg4535 Well, I was referring more specifically to samurai sword duels. In real battle, like everyone else in history, they mostly used spears and pole arms like the naginata. In the west, there was far more emphasis on fencing, even in unarmored duels. I presume that's where modern fencing comes from. The sabers and rapiers of the past were far more fit for fencing than katanas were. They were effective one handed and thus you could keep your body as far from the opponent as possible. And western pistol duels weren't exactly like you see them in the movies. Often, there would be a dispute, and neither guy wanted to be the first to go for the gun, or they'd be seen as the aggressor. This is why draw speed was so important. If you could see a guy going for his humans then draw and fire on target faster than he could get his gun up, you'd have a justified shooting and be seen as a hero. On the other end, the outlaw would just flat out try to draw and shoot as fast as he could. If he pulled this off, he gained notoriety. Eventually, it evolved into both men just trying i draw first. And ironically, the duels didn't always end in one shot as they're portrayed. There was far less honor in it, as you'd expect in a fight for your life. People would keep firing as long as they could, and would also seek cover and even take hostages. Samurai duels often ended after a swing or two, mostly because of their philosophy/spiritual code where they would basically try to be the most aggressive, attacking first and striking with precisonand power. Often, both fighters would do this and it was down to just a split second difference of wo could hit first, and of course there wereany simultaneous strikes. The problem with katanas is they were easily damaged by other weapons,so blocking with the edge was a risk, and they'd often block with the side of the blade if they'd block at all. The ninja had far more interesting ways of attacking, often trying to stay just out of range, and attacking the most forward target, usually the hands or forearms, which could just as easily win a fight as a decapitation.
@dmg4535
@dmg4535 2 года назад
@@augustgreig9420 In regard to western duels, I didn't mean in that in the sense of the literal 3 paces and we turn and shoot, I just meant it was fast my bad for being unclear. I believe our little tiff is mostly over the distinction between a duel and regular melee armed combat haha sorry on the miscommunication. although i find it a little weird that eastern and western bladed combat could be so radically different because of the samurai "philosophy" haha that sounds a little too eastern sensationalism-y to me. Why are western duels to you so completely unlike its depiction in media, yet eastern bladed duels are almost exactly like their depiction in media. You acknowledge that melee combat is messy and unpredictable yet samurai to you are beefed up surgeons who never miss lmao. the one or two strike thing that you mentioned doesn't really lend itself to being a martial art that was as doggedly explored by its' practitioners in the same way that the Japanese did - especially considering the amount of dojos, illustrations of stances/strikes/guards/ripostes, explanations of their uses similarly to their western counterpart. And all that just to get cut down because it is in their philosphy to do so? what's the point of all of that material just to simplify it into "be aggressive i cut i slash me samurai." Samurai (as in the military caste, just to be clear) typically wore armour, iron plates woven together in a primitive lattice, unsure of how easy it would be to strike lethally in one or two blows im sure it's happened - plenty of times even, but i don't think that it was the "norm," but hey to be fair i'm prone to being wrong haha i appreciate the conversation tho sorry if there's any errors im on a bus rn lol

@megavolt67
@megavolt67 2 года назад
I feel you, man. I remember the early DOA games being popular. The problem is that people who play fighting games professionally aren't always in a good position to judge how popular fighting games were with people who bought them just to play for fun. And back in the day when SF2 was a huge seller for Capcom on SNES, or even years later when Tekken Tag Tournament was a big seller on PS2, it wasn't because people were to going to tournaments or listening to the opinions of fighting game pros. I would argue that the FGC as we know it today didn't have any real influence on the commercial success and perceived impact of fighting games until after SF4. Third Strike, which many diehard fighting game fans love, was not a mainstream success at all (and only one of the pros in the video was willing to acknowledge it). The original KI (in arcade and on SNES) for example was way bigger than Third Strike with casual fans but because Third Strike is so big with the FGC post-Daigo parry, their perspective on it is skewed.

Most impactful fighting games of all time: SF2 VF 1 MK 1 Karate Champ Darkstalkers 1 SF2 redefined what fighting games were and literally laid the template for the genre to follow VF1 started the entire 3-D fighting game genre, without it there wouldn't even be a Tekken, DOA, Soul Calibur, etc MK 1 set a precedent for violence, not only in fighting games, but videogames as a whole, and is what spurred the creation of ESRB Karate Champ is the game that laid the groundwork for what SF became and directly influenced it. Darkstalkers is the game that influenced the "anime fighter" sub-genre. Games like Guilty Gear, Melty Blood, etc derived from what Darkstalkers started with it's gameplay, animations, etc.

Karate champ doesn’t belong there, just because it’s technically considered the first fighting game ever it made no impact what so ever for the genre at all and you can easily say a game like urban champion which came out around the same time made just as much of an impact if not more. SF2, MK1 and VF1 are absolutely top 3 but dark stalkers seems more like a biased choice. Sure you can say it was the first anime style fighter but what makes it more impact than Samurai Shodown which was the first weapon based fighter or KOF which was the first team based fighting game and introduced cross over characters in fighting games or x men children of atom which was the first marvel based fighting game which brought in a whole new fan base and revived marvel which was a dying franchise in the 90s, or killer instinct which introduced a magnitude of new fighting game mechanics or tekken which took what VF did and brought it to a much wider audience or smash bros which was arguably more impactful than all the games I mentioned which reinvented a completely different style of fighting games and brought in a ridiculous amount of new people into the genre.
@orlanzo2621
@orlanzo2621 2 года назад
@@stevesteve0521 It being the first fighting game and directly inspiring SF is why it’s there man. To say it didn’t have an impact is crazy lol. Tekken definitely doesn’t belong there because it literally just copied what VF did. Tekken didn’t innovate on anything. They copied ideas from VF for years. Darkstalkers isn’t a “biased” pick because it’s not even one of my favorite series or anything, heck I like Samurai Shodown more. I included it because it very clearly influenced the entire anime fighter sub genre. And yea SamSho could definitely be included as one of the most influential fighting games ever, I literally said as much. My list isn’t an end all be all of most influential/impactful fighting games, of course there are plenty that could be added. I just listed ones off the top of my head. SFIII 3rd Strike kinda gets click baited. It wasn't that it was a bad game. It was that Arcades literally died out when the first SFIII released and then Dreamcast died when 3rd Strike was released. So it had a small playerbase through it's entire life span. Arcades weren't money makers anymore, literally nearly all the arcades within a 4 hour drive of me shut down except for maybe 2 that stayed around for half a decade longer. And the one in my town hadn't bought any new arcades since 94-95. I asked back in 98 if they'd get X game, but they said they didn't plan on spending any more cash on arcades because new games cost so much and the money wasn't coming in to keep the current games going either.
