Great test and thanks. Blue flame is more efficient than yellow flame. it's probably why Heet cooks faster than denatured alcohol so you need less of it so one could turn it off earlier because in the end, what matters most is that what we're cooking is cooked.
If you look at the flames when he first lights them you notice that the denatured alcohol is burning much more orange indicating a dirtier flame my guess is the one on the right which had a much blue flame is burning a lot hotter so why you can time it the way he did you're not measuring the efficiency due to the flames
Exactly! It’s all about btu- British thermal unit output. The blue flame is cleaner and FASTER. The yellow flame may burn longer but it is dirtier in use and less output of power.
@@bigriceburner methanol has less btu than ethanol. But heet is 99% methanol and denatured is often more mystety mix. Cant find info on that crown denatured. Probably has more water than they'd want to admit.
Yep just as I thought...I guessed it right...because I use Heet and 70% Isopropyl...The Heet always burns up faster but burns hotter...the Iso lasts longer but burns cooler...a good relative mix of the two together keeps the pots clean and I get a good hot flame. Those are my observations on my end for about 2 years of this cooking method. It's fun and tasty...now if I can just get that free wood to burn like alcohol does...lol. "Nope, I'm not talking about the gasifier either"...lol. Great video! And by-the-way...who cares about scientific accuracy?...What works in a test is the real world...you tested it and there it is..1oz of that fuel seems to give you 4 more minutes of burn time. Good enough for me...time to cook them Frog Legs Again...lol.
Man Land Hi Man Land, Thanks for the great info! I sure like using my alcohol shove! I guess I need to boil some water on the next video! The denatured alcohol sure put out some flame that's for sure! Is that good or bad I don't know! Expert on alcohol shoves I'm not!..lol..Thanks for watching and for your comment!.. PS Have fun cooking up them Frog Legs!!.. :-)
Interesting test and very timely as I just picked a alcohol stove and used it for the first time this last weekend. I have been doing some testing myself it and found my Stanley Adventure set pot takes a good 3 to 5 minutes longer to boil 20oz of water than my GSI kettle using my Esbit burner (Trangia knock off) with Heat I will have to try the denatured alcohol see if it boils faster than the Heat.
primalarcher Hi Jason, I sure like my alcohol shoves! They are fun to use! Denatured and Heet both work great! I know that denatured puts out more flame! Is that good or bad I don't know! I'm not a expert on alcohol stoves that's for sure! Have fun with yours. You just have try both fuels and see what works best for you! Thanks my friend take care!
They say blue flame is hotter than orange, but the denatured was the clear winner on this one. Four minutes per ounce longer burn than Heet. That is a very significant difference. It's cheaper, too...at least it is where I live. I've played around with both, but I always use denatured when I'm out. Excellent vid, bud.
I have always preferred the de-natured alcohol. You have just convinced me to continue that. As always, great video and thank you for doing it. I hope that you are enjoying life and having a great time over there in Central Oregon, (God's country) Take care my friend.
campfire52 Hi Terry, I think the denatured alcohol is the best fuel to! It seems to burn a little hotter to! I hope your doing well!! Its going to be a nice day today in Central Oregon, Its going to get up to 67 deg. and sunny! That's always nice! Thanks for watching my friend and you take care!!.. :-)
Caveman Outdoors Hi The denatured alcohol did burn just a little longer not much about 60 seconds! It did look a little hotter too! Thanks for watching!.. :-)
Out of curiosity, can you store the Heet in plastic squeeze bottles with a twist spout (so it's easy to add fuel to a trangia in mid flight)? Or will the plastic squeeze bottle spontaneously explode or burst into flames if you put Heet in it?
I use the Trangia for years now...and will now go over the big water to the USA....I add water here in the alcohol. You do that as well....not for this test but in general
I've seen in other videos, haven't cut mine open :-), that the Trangia stoves have a cotton liner in them to help wick the fuel up to the jets. Any chance that older stove had some residual fuel left in the wicking? Since you already have both fuels, maybe another test is in order with a couple of simple open burners, something like a couple of soda can bottoms. Would be no question then....
***** Hi, I don't know if they have cotton liners. The older stove has not been used for over a year! The newer stove I used it about 2 weeks ago, it had the Heet in it! Thanks for watching!.. :-)
Interesting test, I have always wondered if there was a big difference. Haven't been on you tube lately, but looking forward to finding some vid time here soon. Nice to see ya still having a good time and sharing with us all. Hope all is well.
simplymy2sense Hi Simply, Its been a long time!! I hope you and your family are doing well! I'm looking forward to some of your new videos! Oh and one fuel does burn just a little longer not by much! You take care and say hi to the kids for us!... :-)
I have used heet in my stove for years and never got sick. And I have cooked lots of food on my alcohol stove. So I would say its safe to use. Hey thanks for the sub. I got ya back, I checked out your channel, And you have a cool channel too. Thanks.
Great video, but you should have put an aluminum or titanium cook pot on each, then checked out the bottoms of the pots to see which one burned the cleanest.. That black char is a bummer when backpacking.. 👍
