Most retro gamers own CRTs, but which consoles should you play on them? In particular, what about those 6th generation consoles (Xbox, GameCube, PS2, Dreamcast) and even the Wii? I cover the information you'll need to decide which consoles play best on a CRT TV and which consoles play best on something different.
Which Consoles Should You Play on a CRT TV? - Retro Bird / Which Video Game Systems Play Best on a CRT TV?

It was always simple for me: Gen1-6 on 4:3 CRTs, Gen7-9 on 16:9 non-CRTs. Yes, some Gen6 games support EDTV, but the vast majority of people played them on SD-CRTs during the first half of the '00s. This fact, combined with the massive leap in online accommodations from gen6 to gen7, leads me to consider Gen1-6 truly retro and Gen7-9 truly modern. Radically different eras of gaming.
@mr.jamster8414
@mr.jamster8414 Год назад
I see it as four groups: 1-2: "dawn era" the kind of games they have pre-booted into hospital screens or as Easter eggs in certain apps. 3-4 "2d era" classic arcade style and adventure games from this era. When games first got actually fun and interesting. 5-7 "3d era" 3d games with a lot of depth and creativity, especially around 2004-2012 with so much unique things coming out like Spiderman 2, Skate, and Minecraft. (Yup) 8-9 "corporate era" when games got stale and loot boxes became a thing. GRAPHICS-wise, though, it really depends... Zero Tolerance and Beneath A Steel Sky are two games from the same year, one of them looks like dogshit on anything *but* a CRT, and the other is hand-drawn backgrounds that look good on anything.

The Wii is the exception to this rule. It’s essentially a 6th gen console hardware-wise and looks better on a CRT.
@Enigmatism415
@Enigmatism415 8 месяцев назад
@@HydraSpectre1138 The Wii was like a GameCube with a new interface, and the WiiU was like a non-portable Switch. Nintendo has long since given up on graphics, which is smart because they'll never put a dent in Microsoft and Sony through a graphics war.

Oh come on they're definitely a hassle when you try to pick them up they're heavy and your heart will be pounding not to drop it I recently just picked up and Mitsubishi 2040u very similar to a 2070 when I brought it home from driving 2 hours two and back I felt like life would end if I dropped it it turned on I had to do some calibration though it was a bit blurry so I just had to change the x and y resolutions and then I also change the voltage which might I say if you do this do not and I repeat do not use a standard screwdriver when you go to adjust the three little screws on the left side on the back of the CRT there's a very high chance you can short out the whole thing and kill it just go down to your hardware store pick up a wooden rod snap it or cut it to the size you want like a screwdriver and use an exacto knife and shave it in the shape of a Philips head like you're making a spear or just go out and buy a plastic screwdriver just no metal

Picked up a good CRTtv this week and it made such a massive difference when playing stuff like Goldeneye or Jet Force Gemini on N64. Hooking it up to an HDtv made the image so fuzzy that it was practically impossible to make out any in-game object that weren’t right in front of the player, now with the CRT it all looks crisp and clean (and old and pixelated, just the way I like it haha)

My go to explanation for why CRTs are better is the pipe in Mario. A CRT blurs the chekerboard pattern of light and dark greens into a third shade of green, creating a gradation effect that makes the pipe look round. That's why it was designed with that checkerboard effect. On an HD display, it doesn't make any sense. It's like watching a 3D movie without the glasses; it will look awful because the image was not created with the expectation that anybody would be watching it without the glasses.
@kimjongun2946
@kimjongun2946 3 года назад
Almost forgot, the biggest factor for me to choosing CRTs is input lag. Mike Tyson's punch out and other games that require precision timing is literally unplayable on a HDTV due to input lag.

Man my parents hoard everything even as far as old used calendars. My old Panasonic 50cm flat screen 480p CRT lived under their house buried behind and under a pile of junk for over 10 years. A couple years ago I decided it was time to get it and make some space at my place. The pile of junk was still there, the TV was not. For whatever reason they were compelled to sift through old bits of foam mattress cutoffs, broken laundry baskets, punctured bike tyre tubes and the like, take out the mint TV, place it on the curb and put all the literal landfill back where it was. Absolutely baffled by that logic but oh well.

I remember playing COD on the 360 with a CRT before I had an HDTV, though, and reading the text and symbols on that particular TV sucked. I'd make sure that if you're going to be playing games - not just later-gen games - on a CRT, that you have a decent one. That particular TV was around $200 and from the tail end of when CRTs were popular. The difference blew me away when I finally scored a decent one from a relative.

EDTVs are underrated. I have an early EDTV Plasma mounted above my 4k OLED just for Dreamcast and that era of games, it also has a VGA input so it looks like a sharp Arcade monitor when playing Dreamcast and the like, simply awesome

I generally use my crt for my PS2 and 64. Mostly because with games like Tony Hawk and fighting games that require precision inputs, the crt doesn't give you lag like say plugging it into a HD TV would. Plus component cables really give the PS2 a much clearer, deeper and sharper image than the standard composite cables I used for years. The only issue I have with the crt is where to put it when reorganising the room

A nes, Snes, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, ps2, original xbox, Wii, Sega saturn, and running through a hdmi to scart converter, Xbox 360, ps3, and a pretty low grade PC for some cool steam games.. It's all housed in an arcade style cabinet but since the crt is massive it's a beast of a unit, was a dream project!

I have a PS1, PS2, PSP and N64 connected to a 13 inch CRT. My PS1 with HD Retrovision, PS2, and PSP are on a Component Video Selector, getting razor sharp picture quality on the TV. My N64 is just on the Composite input on the back of the tube which still looks pretty decent. I like playing Time Crisis II and 3 with the PS2's Guncon 2 and it is a literal blast.

we need to ask people who produces those 4k tv´s to make crt filters(or filters in general, so we can play with the visual experience of the entertainment we consume, like people who uses filters on phones), so we can watch general low-res content in a much better way (from old anime/tv series and movies that will probably never get remastered, to old consoles
@RetroBirdGaming
@RetroBirdGaming 3 года назад
I think that would probably be a huge undertaking to implement that kind of technology, and there just wouldn't be enough demand for it on a grand scale (even as large as the retro gaming community has become).

For Gen 6 consoles I find a plasma or a 720p LCD to be a great solution as they handle 480p pretty well and these consoles do support 720p widescreen in some cases so it's a catch all. The other excellent option for 5th 6th and even 7th gen consoles is a nice DLP projector. They upscale amazingly well - even the 4K models.

At this point I've been hooking everything up to my 4k, but i've been painstakingly modding everything to do native digital via high quality (and always out of stock and expensive) hdmi mods. I was lucky enough to recently get the Mega sg and Super Nt. Those consoles are absolute winners so if you have the money and they're available, get them. I did a pluto board mod myself on my gamecube replacing the old digital port with HDMI and MAN, games look so clean. It's like playing them for the first time all over again. Just got my Og Xbox done with the Makemhz Mod. But that was a suffering of the mind. I got it working my self for a very short time, but it ended up not behaving. Ultimately i had to have the install done by a verified installer. As a result, for better or for worse, i have several xboxs and a couple of console shells giving me the opportunity to do something a little extra.

I had an HD CRT (480p, 1080i) wii looked gorgeous on it and Wii U quite good too. I currently have an 80s CRT & a 90s CRT side by side, the 80s one looks best for 2D but has major overscan. Sometimes I throw a projector in there too. I have lcd tv and CRT TV options for my Dreamcast. My ponderance is whether or not to run Dreamcast vga on an lcd monitor or a CRT monitor, I have both but the CRT one is hardwired vga cable so I'd need an adapter to use the DC w it

I use my CRT for my Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, GameCube, N64, PS1, PS2, PS2(pal), OG Xbox, and the Wii. My HDTV for my 360, and Xbox one. Using two switcher boxes, I have all hooked up ready to go and just swap out the wires for my Dreamcast light gun games. It's simple enough, if you're going to play retro consoles, you should play them on a TV that the hardware and software was designed and optimized to play on. I have a SNES and PS2 and like to play those on CRT. Though I've used them on my HDTV before and it wasn't terrible.

Fun vid man, unfortunately I didn't have the good sense to hold onto the CRT we got for free (which supported 480p too). Definitely a "doh!" moment. For the older consoles HDMI solutions are the way I go (good cables, Analogue, and etc).

Because of the fact that many 6th generation games support 480p, 720p, 1080i, and/or widescreen, I'd still advise the use of an HD CRT for those consoles.

@@masquedwarrior1627 yes for real on my Philips hd crt ps3 looks amazing via hdmi also due to the fact that those games render at lower res than 720p internally like gta iv in that regard crt helps
@burnoutcollectivist4660
@burnoutcollectivist4660 2 года назад
@@masquedwarrior1627 I agree an HD CRT would be best for those reasons, but I think an SD CRT isn't too far behind for 6th gen (plus Wii) since by far 480i and 480p are the most common resolutions for most games on these consoles, while 720p and 1080i games are extremely rare overall (only the Xbox has a decent handful, but it's truly only a handful). Which is completely the opposite of 7th gen where an SD CRT is WAYYY behind a widescreen HD CRT thanks to the vast majority of games being widescreen 720p (and at least 480p).
