@@david_does That's amazing that the Beryl has more horsepower for VPNs than the Slate does. Did I hear you right on that?

I use a Mango router as a repeater for my phone hotspot. GLiNet routers are all good for travel and/or access points and repeaters.

Exciting stuff. I'm new to travel routers & my work is going to demand travels in the near future. These are quite neat w/ the VPNs built in. Glad to see GL iNet is seeing value in smaller creators. Congrats on the sponsorship.

Thanks, I’m not tech savvy but will be working remote in a few weeks and this has helped on the travel router decision. Can you do a video on travel edc you would recommend? As in things you take when you work remote.

Im on a low budget and was wondering if this could be used as a VPN client for one device alone through a direct connection from the router?

I was delighted to get a travel router for my family and as a network engineer it should be relatively easy to use right ? There are PLENTY of issues with that hardware/software combo and I still can't connect my IOS devices to the 2.4G SSID on my Beryl router.... which is an issue for remote rooms and all .... :( I was very excited at first and I ended up very disappointed.

I am looking for a system to use a router with that will allow me to be fully independent from having to use hotel internet when I travel. AND… I know little about these things but I do travel and I want security and ease in being autonomous (is that even possible?). I ended up getting a GL-Inet SFT1200 Opal model over the Beryl AX because the security is supposed to be stronger. I am having a hard time getting the router to power on and can return it because I just received it a few days ago. Can you compare both the Opal and Beryl models for us?

I'm interested in a router to bridge an existing wifi network with a captive login portal (think hotel/airplane/cruise-ship) and then share that 1 paid connection with multiple devices. My concerns are around heat a power draw, which most videos do not address. I'll be placing the router into a backpack and powering it off a USB battery for 12-24 hours at a time. 100Mbps would be more than enough speed for me. Are any of the routers showcased good for that use case? My guess is the Mango draws less power (hopefully generating less heat) than the others and I don't mind the USB micro. Thanks!
@david_does
@david_does 2 месяца назад
This is a really good question. So heat would be a consideration but based on my testing I *think* it should be fine. I may try running one of these in a backpack for a few hours to see. If that works you would just need to calculate the power draw using a battery drain calculator online where you enter the mAh of your battery pack.

the opal seems like a good compromise between the mango and the beryl. it's like 40 bucks, usb c charging, 1 gb wan/ 2 gb lan ports, only usb 2.0 A port but good enough in a pinch. AC1200 speeds. I think for most general use cases, this one checks a lot of boxes, and if you feel like you need more, you probably already know what requirements you have going into it.

I would like a travel router mostly used on cruise ships. With the fluctuation of speed and bandwidth limitations being distributed to the cabins, which one would you recommend? Thanks!

They also have a slate plus that has the same power as the beryl.

You are right! I should have requested that one for the comparison as it is more comparable. In that case it really comes down to profile and port quantity.

I’m currently doing seasonal work and plan on traveling at least for a few years. I have my PC with me, but unfortunately dorm living provides terrible Wi-Fi speeds and I’m looking for something to help with that. I’ll be making a purchase soon based on your recommendation, but I’m caught up on how to use these? Does the product have its own internet connection or would I need to take the SIM from my phone and use it? Thank you to anyone who can answer, it’s the only thing I’m curious about. So ready to play some Halo, D2, and COD again if anyone has input for running those types of games.
@david_does
@david_does Месяц назад
Hey! This may not be the best option for you as it requires you to feed it with an internet connection. For example it takes your dorm's wifi and extends you your own personal network. It still would depend on the dorm's wifi. However, if you have good LTE (5G) service in the area check out the T-Mobile Home internet stuff. It is about $60/month and may be a good place to start. Latency may be a bit high for gaming but possibly better than your dorm.

Curious. Isn’t the Beryl overkill for 2.5 gig ports when most hotels etc. don’t offer speeds nearly that fast? I would almost want the extra Ethernet port vs faster less number of ports given the speed limitations of most places.
@david_does
@david_does 2 месяца назад
Honestly - yes! 2.5 is a bit much. It's great it has it but the form factor is really what sold me on it.

Beryl AX doesn't support EAP protocol. So you will not be able to connect it in many hotels that uses this protocol. I have one Beryl AX and had a bad experience in my first use. The hotel I tried to use, was EAP protocol and I was unsuccessful to connect. The SSID doesn't even appear in Beryl AX menu when it's a EAP WIFI/Network.
