On Princess Cruises we were very close to Dawes Glacier on my last two trips there, much closer than other lines would seem to suggest. Star Princess is an older and smaller ship which may have something to do with how close we got to the Glacier. On my last cruise the captain even bragged that it was the closest any Princess ship got to the glacier (I guess they keep records of such things). The English Captain said he was egged on to get closer by some British Royal on the ship. The program director explained all this that evening after the dinner show. Could have been a big, tall tale for our entertainment, but I personally could not believe how close we were to that glacier!

Wow! That is awesome to hear. I had no idea that Star Princess was able to get super close to Dawes Glacier. What you see in the video is really the closest we could get on Ovation or Quantum. I recommend Glacier Bay National park for your first cruise to Alaska for sure :) Do Dawes Glacier after you've seen Glacier Bay :)

So happy to hear this is the kind of info you're looking for :) Alaska planning can be challenging so it's always good to know about your options and which one might make the most sense for you! Perfect timing! Just booked on NCL Encore Oct '22. Though it is impossible to plan, when Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier are under spectacular weather, it is absolutely magical. I haven't seen Glacier Bay and will do it on this next cruise on Encore.

Hey John! That is so awesome!! Are you on the last sailing for Encore? I went on the last sailing 10/16/21 last year :) I was tempted to go on the 10/16/22 sailing as well but got some other vacations coming up soon! 100% agree on the weather, you never know, but Glacier Bay will amaze you especially if it's snowing, just wow! @@CruisingWithJT I will message on Facebook for sure. I didn't get the last sailing. I saw it snow back in May on the Glacier Bay day. That was really nice. My August Ovation cruise had the best weather of the season (according to the crew).

I need to check out Celebrity’s Alaska itineraries. We didn’t know what we were doing when we went on our cruise - would have loved to have gone to Glacier Bay!

I’d love to go on Celebrity next, I heard that some of their itineraries even go to Hubbard Glacier which is massive and beautiful and a change of experience for me. Hopefully Celebrity does offer some to Glacier Bay though, it’s a must visit! 😍

For Itenary to Glacier Bay from Seattle what side of the ship is best for a balcony? Thanks

Great question! It doesn’t really matter what side you’re on since the ship turns at the glaciers and passes by the glaciers on both sides when you’re going and coming back. For other scenery, like mountains and waterfalls, again both sides are good. Getting a balcony in general is best. Hope that helps!

How much closer do you get with the separate excursions to the glacier vs staying on the ship in glacier bay?

There aren't any separate excursions from cruise lines that get even closer to the glacier if Glacier Bay is already on your itinerary, but if you go on an itinerary with Dawes Glacier, it usually costs $200 per person, excursion lasts around 5-6 hours and drops you back to Juneau, and it gets you pretty close, like real close... it's worth it for sure, but I rather go to Glacier Bay anyway, more glaciers to see versus just one.
