@Road Test TV
A 1970 GTO Judge takes on a 1968 Camaro SS396 in a quarter mile drag race. Pontiac vs Chevrolet, who wins?
Both cars are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are very limited. The only modifications permitted are minor porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. Camshafts and compression ratio have to be within a small percentage of stock specs. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires (See more below).
The 1970 GTO Judge in the video is powered by Pontiac's potent 400 cubic inch Ram Air III (6.6L) which was rated at 366 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. This particular GTO has a Turbo 400 3 speed automatic transmission and 3.73 positraction rear end.
The 1968 Camaro SS 396 in the other lane is extremely rare as only 272 L78 Camaro's were built in 1968 with the L89 aluminum head option. The SS396 Camaro in the video is powered by Chevy's potent, solid lifter, high winding big block 396 cubic inch (6.5 L) RPO L78 which was rated at 375 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The L78 is a legend with Chevy Big Block fans. The Camaro has a Muncie 4 speed manual transmission and 4.10 posi rear in the 12 bolt housing.
Auto vs Stick ! Pontiac vs Chevy !! So WHO WINs?

Love the black spoiler option on the Judge, both cars are beautiful. Nice to see them duking it out instead of rotting in a museum.

Man, that Camaro was booking. The best thing about your videos is the short time. When I watch that other channel's "stock drags" I skip right to the races.

@@badass6.0powerstroke10 just one of a few Ford got right. They got the Pony Car craze started but why did it take Shelby to make them into what their potential really was. Why did they hobble the Boss 9? GM (except Cadillac) at least put their cars out there and made them popular. Mopar swung some healthy hardware and kept with their roots of making their cars perform more than stylish, at least early on. The styling finally caught up towards the end of the muscle car era. AMC had some serious iron in the R2 Hawks. Why those cars didn't catch on is a good story.

The RA III was way undercammed like the 455 HO was. The L-78 396 were 520 solid lift with duration in the 240 range @ .050. I still wonder how Chevy got away with Pontiac couldn't do with GM horsepower per weight rule?

@Pop's Garage Mayhem On the money Pops. A big fat A body, against a super light 1st gen F-body. With a 4 spd to boot. L-78/4.10s, vs RAIII auto/3.73s. Goat didn't stand a chance. In it's defense, low 13s are very respectable times, (depending on modifications/tires.)

The Boss 429 wasn't what it was hyped up to be. Now the 427 FE Engines, those were a different story, Excellent Drag Race Engine. I'm partial to the 351 Cleveland's and the 429-460 Ford Big Blocks. So much potential, through some Heads and a Nice Solid Roller and a 4.30" or 4.50" Stroked Crank and you gotta a N/A Monster that can make 1000 HP And be practically Bullet Proof. And can compete with any Big Block Chevy.

@thegreenerthemeaner
@thegreenerthemeaner 4 года назад
You might be surprised what jetting, timing, and some suspension work will do. With the aluminum heads, it weighed the same as a small block. Making the engine work on top of the rpm range and not blowing the tires off down low certainly helps.
@rjmzz430
@rjmzz430 4 года назад
Not only can it run 12s it can do it all day long. Put some slicks on it and uncork the exhaust and that sucker touch low 12 high 11's

@@rjmzz430 Joel Rosen used the L72 engine with headers, Mallory dual point, a Tarantula intake or removing the plenum divider in the stock one, 4.56s and usually the L88 or ZL1 camshaft, and the Super Bite suspension mods to make one run on the 11.50 guarentee. An L78 couldn't quite use all of that camshaft despite heads and intake being the very same. Cubic inches just couldn't develop quite enough port velocity to make it run very good below 3500 with all of that duration. 4.88s helped but 4.56s were the optimal for any Mark IV in a 1/4. I am curious about the fuel he uses here as well. 12.60s is pretty impressive on street tires. BTW, all of the modifications I just mentioned are not allowed in this class. Custom tuner cars of the day like Dana, Nickey, Yenko and of course Motion would run those numbers on bigger tires but, they aren't allowed here either. Don't get me wrong, 396s are scrappy and powerful but as time has progressed, we have learned well about cubic inches. On the street, well.........
@rjmzz430
@rjmzz430 4 года назад
@@thegreenerthemeaner Yea man safe to say that Rosen prepped car more like a super stock class with all those mods but with a little massaging and tuning the 396 was more than capable of running in the 12s all day!
