When I test the sigma 28-70 and sony 20-70 instore for handheld stabilization the difference is massive, hence I got 20-70mm at end, and your test show that really well!
I used the Sony 20-70F4 G lens for my travel to Hakone and Kawagoe. It was excellent as a travel lens. As for video stabilisation, it has been reported that the newer Sony cameras with active stabilisation seem to work better with native new Sony lenses like this 20-70G and 16-35G lens compared to third party lenses.
I think your stabilization test really sealed the deal for me, Ive been thinking about getting the Sony 20-70 vs other 3rd party lenses with similar range. but the was wondering how big the difference really was in terms of stabilization. Ang laki ng diffrence pala! thanks for the review
I suspect the difference in stabilization can be because of the way Tamron reports the current focal length, sometimes it's wrong in metadata on photos. Maybe Sony doesn't apply the right focal length stabilization on purpose. Or Gyro data is only active when a native lens is attached otherwise an algorithm with less inputs is used. Please try to inform the focal length as 20mm in the steady shot menu and see if the stabilization is better with the Tamron, I have that guess since I have good results with some manual lens when I set the focal length manually.
Great video and comparison. I think overall the Sony seems slightly ahead, especially for video. Also the 3,5x zoom vs 2x was pretty noticable. The difference in stabilization was huge, where the Tamron has the micro-shakes whenever you take a step. I suppose you could get the 20mm F2.8 prime + 28-75mm F2.8 from Tamron for the same price as the Sony alone, to cover the same range and have that F2.8 aperture, although that's 2 lenses to carry around instead of one.
I agree with all your comments on these 2 lenses. But I have now switched to a 2 prime lens setup. hehehe. I now use the Sony 20mm f1.8 and the Sony 50mm f1.4.
Thank you for this test. I would highly appreciate if you could answer the question: does active stabilization work the same on 3rd party zoom lens as on native Sony provided you dial the given focal lenght manually??
Hi Niko, my A7C doesn't have "Active Stabilization" instead it has "Steadyshot On". Do you think the stabilization performance between this 2 lenses matter?
Hi! I have this lens, and I have heard that there is vignetting at 20mm with a 67mm nd filter. I'm also worried about there being vignetting if I use a step up ring. What nd filter and/or step up ring do you use with this lens? I was looking at getting the Polar Pro Peter McKinnon filter with mist. Should I get that (if so what size), or should I get a different filter? Thanks!
@NikoBols I do.use it, but I'm travelling south america for 3 months and only want to take 2 lenses. And I need a zoom and also could save some money by selling the 35mm as the zoom lens has that length 😅
@@elzycollins nice. Thanks for sharing your reasoning for selling it. Love learning different people's use cases when it comes to deciding which gear to get 🙂
