I just picked up the M type 240 and I’m glad that’s the one I went with! Better ISO performance than the M9 and the images are outstanding. And I picked up the Olympus VF-2 for waaaaay less money than the EVF Leica makes. It’s really nice to have when shooting my 50mm f1.5 and my 90mm. If you go for a 10 or 10R consider waiting because the M11 is rumored to be announced VERY SOON and used prices might go down a bit. I’m making a video with the Leica M vs M6 right now, coming to a RU-vid near you.

If the M9 has had it’s sensor replaced by Leica that couldn’t be a problem anymore. A other thing to keep in mind is the M9 is a noise camera , after every photo the engine the drives the shutter makes quite a racket.

Dude, go for a Fujifilm X-Pro 3 or an X-T 3/4 - Yes a cropped sensor but just think about all those vintage lenses you can adapt on them combined with the X-Trans sensor as well as the sensor colour array which is different from many of the mainstream camera manufacturers. Plus you get all those Fuji film simulations which when you combine that with a vintage lens you get some really cool results.

I recently sold off all my Film Cams and got an M10. I discovered after about 4 years of using film only that it was the shoot experience that I valued the most. The M10 puts me in the same state of mind when out making pictures. I have the screen turned off for the most part. The M10 feels much like my old M6 in terms of thickness .. just with a much better / brighter finder.

I have been using my Leica m7 for years and recently I just bought a m9. After trying a few days, I totally love it especially the whole experience is very similar to a Leica film camera. Colour is definitely different than CMOS. A few things you have to think about before coping one: 1. Only get the CCD sensor replaced one (CCD15/16 will be fine). 2. The LCD screen isn’t too helpful since it was a 2009 camera, but since you are already used to shoot film camera, the screen won’t be an issue. 3. SD card: make sure you use a smaller volume SD card with lower speed (I use 16GB 48m/s), I tried using high speed big volume SD card and my camera jammed. Other than these, I think go are good to go with M9.

I totally agree with your alter ego. Get any camera but a Leica. It is all hype. My feeling is that Leica owners have to justify paying more for a camera because they know in their heart they have been conned. The photos aren't any better, nor mechanically, nor lens wise. In regards to film cameras you really can't tell any difference between the photos of a great vintage camera like a Zeiss Ikon, Exakta, Nikon, Voigtlander, Canon and a Leica. I think we need to start a photographer support group for all the members of the Leica cult who want to leave the cult! BTW THERE IS NO LEICA "LOOK" to Leica photos that sets Leica photos apart. That is just more hype. Repeat after me - "Leicas aren't any better than any other cameras, Leicas aren't any better than any other cameras, Leicas aren't any better, Leicas aren't any better than any other cameras!!!!" Now do that at least 10 times a day and you may begin to free yourself from the Leica cult!

Best advice I can give you: go take a look on flickr on photos taken with those models. I had a itch for Leica M9 when I heard about the CCD sensors and it's film-like rendering. Spent hours on Flickr, comparing photos and realized, at least to my eyes, that it was bullocks, and saved tons of money. I will say that the Leica lenses do render with more microcontrast then say a Fuji or Sony glass. Also the M9 is known to have sensor issues (delaminating)

Hey Ribsy :) if you want the film experience in a digital body id go for the Leica M-D (262) or the M10D. if you want files that look more like film and if you do not care about high iso, go for the M8 or M9. ( for the M9 go for a camera thats sensor has already been replaced by leica ) If you want a modern sensor, high iso performance and a crisp screen, go for the M10

Yo Ribsy, another way to go is get a film Leica body with a Leica lens. You’d be getting amazing image quality. The optics are as important or sometimes more important than the digital sensor. Don’t get lost down the rabbit hole Ribsy - buy an M-P and put your money into lenses. Both bought used, I’ve just traded my M-P 240 on a M10 - both 24MP sensors. The M-P produces outstanding files but you need great lenses as well. Not all mine are Leica but that’s where you should put your money. When I bought my used M-P I got a new 35mm summicron (now worth more than the camera) and then picked up others off eBay. The rangefinder thing is great, but if you are digital as well you need to budget for an EVF. The Olympus EVF for the M240s is not worse than the Fuji x-pro I traded but if you want to see the scene in B&W or use a lens less than 28mm or more than 50mm you will want one. Biggest problem - the dot. If you buy a M-P 240 it doesn’t have a Leica red dot on the front, problem solved, but the earlier M-240 and the M10 do - so you will need to have an existential conversation with yourself about taping over your dot…

Damn, you just opened a can of worms for all the m9 haters. I love the m9. Sensor corrosion issues aside (I assume you’d buy one with the most recent sensor replacement), in every way it’s the most film-like digital Leica. The m240 is the best value of the three, and while the video it offers is not objectively great I love shooting little videos on it with ltm and m-mount lenses on a native body.

M8 - Under certain lighting conditions, need to use an IR/Cut filter or blacks will look purple! M9 - sensor corrosion issue that is no longer repairable if it happens. M-E (original version [type 220, I think]) is basically an M9 (haven’t heard if original M-Es also experience the sensor corrosion issue or not). M240 - has option to add Olympus EVF (this point alone makes the M240 end up on my short list). M-E (2nd version) - basically a rebadged M240 but was slightly cheaper in price, but I don’t think many of them are out there). M262 - newer than the M240 and I think the shutter is supposed to be quieter, but drops the EVF option and drops video. M10 - buy it if you can afford to. I’m on the fence myself right now, but leaning towards either the M240 or M262. Then go with any of the newer Voigtlander lenses if budget is a concern.

I have an M9 and I would recommend against it if you can get an M10. The m9 is nice enough, but the camera is noisy and slow (I can shoot more frames per second with my film m lol). The CCD colors are a myth, it looks great in certain situations, but you can get the same colors in post with the m10. Also, the m9 can have some really magenta blotchy skin (in certain situations) that is very hard to fix in post.

No worries, it's still a camera I am going to keep, since I don't have enough reason to upgrade. @Ribsy If you are looking for that film experience in a digital camera, how about the Leica M-D? It's based on the m-240, so somewhat more modern than the M-9. It's a beautiful camera and there is no screen.

Made the same decision. I actually had an M8 and never used it. Didn‘t feel like the M6 by any means. And then there‘s the sound… but loved the pictures. A couple of months ago I got curious and asked a fried if I can try his M10. It was actually a joke. Wasn‘t considering on getting one… but as I had it it blew me away. It just felt like the M6. Also I wasn‘t bummed when I used it instead of film. I chose the m10-p because the sensor is „younger“ and if I want (or have to resell because of cash need), it‘ll keep the price better… and I don‘t regret it. The sound is amazing. And shooting kids and people that react with noise, they don‘t notice it… And the difference in look. Between M8 and M10. Seriously, I don‘t quite see it. Both look beautiful in my opinion. The feeling of the camera though is quite drastically different. Guess it just depends what you use it for. It doesn‘t replace the „imperfections“ of pushed HP5 that was developed sloppy and has some weird marks on it… 😅🤣

A good starting point with Leica for you is the CL. It came out the same year as the M10. It's an APS-C 24MP digital mirrorless with an L mount. You can start with a couple Voigtlander M mount lenses adapted to L and go from there. Look at the Voigtlander 21mm Color Skopar f4 and the NOKTON 40mm f1.4. Gives you a good wide-angle and portrait FOV to work with as you start. Now that I've got that out of the way, I'm gonna say forgo Leica digital cameras altogether if you're looking for a filmic look from a digital mirrorless. For that, go with a Fujifilm camera like the X-pro3 and configure it with a few FujiX Weekly film recipes that you can use at any time on your camera. You can adapt pretty much any manual lens out there to this camera including the lenses you already use on your Canon P and Canon 7. You can't go wrong with either of the options I've suggested. Happy hunting.

I got into Leica with an old Leicaflex and saw the results of using Leica lenses. I put my toe in the water, digitally, with a leica D Lux 5, which is cheap, 5mp, but superb shot in black and white and then made the leap to an M8. I use 2nd hand older lenses and voightlander lenses, all of which are good. The 10mp M8 is a nice camera to use, a bit of a noisy shutter and slightly slow, but the images, again in black and white are really good and very film like, with that Leica look that is contrasty and a bit dreamy in some respects. Rather than the M9, why not look at a 2nd hand SL using M lenses - full frame etc, this looks to me like the perfect hybrid between film and digital.

I went with the M10. It is a bit cheaper now that the M10R is out and is probably going down a little more when the M11 arrives. I held the M240 in my hands and didn't like it. It's a bit thicker and I really didn't care for that. The M10 is the exact same size as an M6 for example. If you can, go to a Leica dealer and have a look at them. It's a lot of money and you should really be sure on which model to spend it. The M9 is supposed to have this great sensor, but it does have its problems. It's really old technology (meaning slow and a little less intuitive than the M240 or M10). You need to make sure that the sensor has been replaced, otherwise you're in big trouble. My first lens was the Voigtländer 35mm 1.4 (thanks Matt Day for the recommendation) and I added the 50mm Leica Summicron. The Leica lens is definitely better, but I still like the look of the Voigtländer, too.

They’re all great options. Having had all three cameras, Id say either the M9 or the m10. The M9 is slow deliberate and mimicks the film look and has amazing BW conversion powers, but feels like a prototype from Leica in the slow operation and painful lcd. The M10 is polished, modern and has amazing dynamic range and color integrity. Over all, the images with the M10 look darker with less luminosity in the files but have way color accuracy and the live view is actually usable with the lowest lag time.

Been shooting with the M6, and earlier in the year, picked up an M9 with replaced sensor (CCD:15) to continue the RF experience into digital. Keep in mind the M9 is a slow performer, can lock up while writing to card, requires patience and suits a slower pace of shooting. The screen is rubbish which is great for naturally reducing chimping. Other than that, I'm very happy with the overall experience that it provides for me and the raw files are great to work with. It's a solid camera as you'd expect an M to be and the shutter sound is lovely in my opinion but some people hates it as it's loud. I shoot to relax and not have to worry about the money shot. I'd grab my fuji kit if I need to be shooting fast although tbh I have not touched my fuji gear much this year. Such a Leica snob I am 😂

Depends on your budget really. Pricewise it goes M240, M-P(240), M9, M10. I wouldn't buy an M9 without documented proof the sensor was replaced with the sensor that fixed the corrosion issue (the first sensors they replaced were with the same type and could corrode as well). I have zero first hand experience with any digital Leica so I don't have any useful opinion on which might be better or worse. But I do have a couple of thoughts that, hopefully, can help you maybe clarify your choices a bit. There are quite a few comments already reading "Leicas are so expensive, you can get this other camera for much less and that other camera will make just as good a photograph." Well, maybe. Or maybe not. And all those are completely missing the point I think: you said you want a Leica. So, absolutely get one. If you can actually handle and use each of the ones you're thinking about it may become very clear which one suits you best. It might be a good idea to rent examples of each if possible. Also: For me it seems a bit odd to buy any digital camera with the intent or idea or hope that it will produce "film like" images. If you want that look and experience it makes better sense to me to just buy a film camera. I can very occasionally tell a film photo apart from a digital photo when I'm looking at them in person, on line everything is digital by the time I see it so about 99% of the eternal film vs digital debates make little sense to me. And, if any photograph is better or worse ONLY because it was made with one or the other medium, I think the image isn't offering very much to begin with. When I am taking photos what gear I am using is important but when I am viewing photographs the gear choices that were made in creating the work really do not matter to me. Trying to keep that in mind when I am showing other people my photos is helping me get better at making photos. Good hunting for your Leica!

But mainly your choosing which sensor system you want. Also voigtlanders recent lenses go hard! Lastly I will say with what your saying about it being a limited camera. For me, the extra price of the M10 is worth it over the M240. Cleaner high ISO's, more dynamic range, smaller body, touch screen, less buttons. That being said, I do believe that the M240 is the best Digital Leica for your dollar nowadays. The M9, if you find one with a repaired sensor, isn't that much less, and often the same price as, the M240. As for the M8, not a fan of the crop, and the CCD 'look' is just due to less dynamic range in my opinion; As a result images come out less flat. People do fantastic work with all of them however, and I suspect you would as well. 🙂

I have film Leicas, but don't really have experience with digitals, but just based on what i've read and seen, I think almost any M is fine, but If you can afford an M10, i'd get that one based on the thickness of it alone, and it being the most recent M is a good reason as well since it would theoretically last longer. You also don't have to worry about a corroded sensor. I played with an M10 in the Leica store and it felt just like my M6, but a little heavier.. I also played around with the M240, which is thicker like the M9 and it just felt so weird... of course, you said this is your first Leica, so you might not notice the difference in the thickness, or realistically, it probably wouldn't bother most people anyway. I'd personally avoid the M8 because of the crop sensor, although people that use it and don't mind the sensor size seem to love the way the sensor renders. I have an X-Pro2 and one of the things that sucks about adapting my Leica lenses to it is that I don't really enjoy using my 50mm lenses on it, (50mm is my fave) and am stuck using the single 35mm that I own to get the equivalent. That's not much of a problem in and of itself, my M-mount 35 is a Voigtlander Nokton classic and I like the images from it, but I have a 50 Summicron and a Canon 50 1.4 and I love the rendering on both, and want to use them, but I don't like the 75mm focal length equivalent that you get on the crop. As far as lenses, you have lenses for your Canon RF. They'll work with an adapter, at least to start with till you want more.. hah

The LCD screen on my M9 is very outdated, so unless you really like to have its CCD sensor (replaced of course), a M240 is a better choice, especially if you can find the ME which has an improved buffer. If budget allows, get the M10 which matches well with the more modern Leica lenses. If not for the rangefinder experience of the M series, you can try the Q with its fixed 28 mm Summilux lens which is basically an upgraded point and shoot camera good for traveling.

First...do try to rent or borrow some Leica digital bodies to see what you like. My first Leica I got last year, the M10 Monochrom. I'm still in love, it goes everywhere with me. My thoughts are, digital...they lose value quicker over time that film ones did, the tech just changes too fast. I hear rumors that the M11 may still come out before EOY. If you can wait, I'd say wait and let that release and let the prices drop on older models (even the M10-R). Research sensor "ROT" on the M8/M9 CCD's. Sure they would be fun, but I got scared from these, as the sensors literally 'rot'...and if you get one that wasn't fixed, it could be an pricey brick tomorrow. With all that said, since digital cameras do not have the shelf life older cameras did with tech moving so fast, yes even for Leica...I'd get the newest one I could afford. I might suggest you look into even the Q2 cameras. Yes, fixed lens, BUT, auto focus, but you still get rangefinder experience and that 28mm lens is awesome...you are basically getting the body and lens for the price of the lens. And, I would say, give some consideration to the Monochrom Leica's....either the M10 or the Q2 Monochrom. Without a bayer array for color, you get amazing tonality, to me it is almost medium format in its look. These are also "see in the dark" monsters...look on RU-vid, they beat out all over cameras they compare to in very low light comparisons. And as for lenses...I started with Voigtlander...and I've been so impressed, unless I score a hidden deal on a Leica lens, I"m not really lusting after any right now. I have the Ultron v2 25mm, the APO 50mm and the 75mm 1.5 Voigtlander lenses. I"ve also had a BLAST adapting other lenses to the M10M....the Russian Jupiter 9 85mm, the swirly bokeh of the Helios 44-2 lens, and most recently a huge deal scored on the Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Trioplan 100mm f/2.8 II with the amazingly unique bubble bokeh. All easily adaptable and fun to shoot with manually with a visoflex EVF.... Anyway, I hope this helps. I only went with Leica due to the M10M being so unique. But once I got it, I've fallen in love with the little rangefinder...it is a blast. I got the RRS full L-Plate set so that it now works seamlessly with my arca Swiss tripod mounts, etc. Ok, I"m rambling, but I hope this helps some....very much looking forward to hearing what you end up with. I'd say if you don't have to change lenses, seriously consider the Q2 models, but if going for interchangeable lenses....go as much M10 as you can afford. And again, mind you, you might wait at least a couple months to see if the M11 drops and pricing adjusts on older models.

M9 with replaced sensor is great, fantastic rich colors. But it's only usable up to max ISO 640, above it you get a lot of noise. My digital is a Nikon D200 so an old camera now. Still love it and would I change it? No. The CCD sensor is fantastic, I love the image quality and feel of the colours and would go CCD over CMOS. I know that it’s not a Leica and images can’t be compared like for like but new for old, I’m not one for chasing the mega pixels, as long as it’s good enough for the print size that you use then happy days. I also have a Sony A7RIIIA and a Leica M Typ 240. Something I can do with both cameras, and the M8 and M9 cannot do that, is to adapt lenses that are without M-Mount (Minolta, Nikon etc). With the EVF (Leica or Olympus VF2) or the Liveview as well as focus peaking and the corresponding adapter, the M240 can also use lenses that are not coupled to the rangefinder. Nevertheless, I'd strongly suggest to avoid M9. That sensor corrosion is a real thing, happened to me. Granted, not with the M9 or any other expensive camera, but with Olympus C5050, which also used a CCD sensor. I bought it new back in 2003., and I still have that camera, which actually springs back to life every time I fill it with fresh batteries, but nothing comes out of that sensor other than the grey noise...

Repair it by myself and produced many fantastic pictures. Then it died completely and it took me a year before I decided to send it to Wetzlar. Repairs are in progress and I am preparing to die because of that 💸 bill 😭. So why I did it? Because in my opinion this camera is so unique that nothing comes close to it , even m9 and s2 which both have ccd. It is not about perfection, it’s about expression. And because it is cheap, you can put some extra in the lens ( I have 28 elmarit on my m8 - that gives you something like 35 mm) P.s If you are in to something special- try Nikon D3s 😉 Best regards Damian

Interesting. You want your digital camera to be like a film camera. Maybe use your film camera for the 'film' look and go for a digital without the film bias. I chose Fujifilm X100v to go with my M6 instead of a digital Leica and I am glad I did. Size was one of the reasons and also price- Not I mean price per se but just the fact that it would've been so expensive that psychologically I felt it might hinder my creative use . I wanted an automatic digital to capture the image perfectly which gives me time to manually work the M6. Having a manual digital AND film camera I felt was too clumsy. As I have mentioned to you in another post I have a Summicron 35mm f2 which everybody says is brilliant but I kind of feel it can be too sharp. I paid the big bucks and now I live with it. it used to be that Leica was the best brand because their lenses were the best. The `sensor' i.e film in any camera was the same. TriX in a Leica or a Kodak Instamatic was the same in both cases. It was the lens that separated the two cameras. Sure body build quality was important but that did not affect image IQ. Today the `film', i.e the sensor is also made by the camera manufacturer to some degree. There's no point putting a Leica lens on a rubbish sensor. I don't know what the Leica sensor is like but there's two factors now in deciding whats the best camera - the lens and the sensor. I also think if you buy a Leica camera and don't use a Leica lens whats the point? I can put a Voightlander lens on my mirrorless Nikon and get the same image quality because its the same lens. Build quality, sure but build quality is equally as good in Canons and Nikons. Don't know about Sony. These are just my musings about spending big money on Leicas and whether it's worth it. But I must say Ribsy I walked into the Leica shop one day down here in Melbourne Australia and picked up and played with a Leica M-A. It has a Summicron lens on it. And THAT was a beautiful experience! If I was a rich man, Ribsy, I would buy it. That camera tells me the aesthetic experience is worth it. But I still think I would only put a Leica lens on it.
