Thank you for your advice, I am learning to spin my own yarn for crocheting as for weaving, the weaving I intend to buy a loom and start up again after 20 years since I last used one though mine was only a small rigid loom ideal for small projects you have given me food for thought

Thanks so much for taking the time to explain the pros and cons of the two types of looms. I am just starting out on my weaving journey after many years of knitting. Your video was soooo helpful. I felt like we were sitting there together discussing the differences. All that was lacking was the pot of tea to share! Looking forward to viewing your other videos.

Great reviews. Several years ago I bought a lovely vintage Kessinich four shaft table loom. I’ve used it exactly once. It’s so finicky and just not fun for me. I have a 25” flip and a 10” cricket that make me happy. I wish I had gotten the 15” cricket, but the 10” is super portable.

Thank you for this video. I wish I had found rigid heddle weaving years ago when I learned to weave. I learned on a floor loom and had a beautiful old four shaft loom. But never used it. Warping was way too tedious for me and I never used it. After selling it last summer and buying a rigid heddle I have been weaving non-stop. For ME, the simpler the tool the more likely I am to use it. I have friends who are master weavers who love complex structure and I totally get that and their 8 shaft floor looms. (I do find some snobbery amongst weavers at the rigid heddle loom, I don't care LOL) I am so excited that there are more teachers and classes aimed at rigid heddle users. Thank you Kelly!
@KellyCasanova

That is why I felt funny saying that the rigid heddle feels a bit more like a play loom, I don't want to perpetuate any snobbery, but I think the fact that I use mine all the time shows that I'm not a loom snob! :D

Thankyou so much for answering my question so quickly! I like the look of both weaving looms but have decided I will almost certainly get the rigid heddle first, then I can always progress to the table loom in the future. As I previously mentioned, I did try a rigid heddle at a local craft show and felt very comfortable using it. Thanks again for your informative videos!

I had to sell my floor loom for a table loom, my knees are bad and I thought there would be np, but couldn't bend down to put up the treadles. So please don't call the table loom not a serious loom, because a lot of people with disabilities can use the table loom.

Thank you so much for this video. I was considering a smaller table loom with 4 shafts but I am a person who can’t focus really well sometimes and if it’s complicated I’m liable to wandering from a project. I will definitely go with the rigid heddle loom and thank you for the statement about wishing you had gone bigger. That was something I’ve had difficulty with, is deciding on the width. Some people have said it’s silly to have a big one unless you use all the space most of the time but my own personal reasoning was that if I have a smaller loom, at BEST all I could do would be double its capacity with double heddle weaving. So while a 16” can provide 32” cloth, a 32” loom could provide 64” cloth. I doubt I’d ever need anything wider than 64”.

I'm so glad I started with the rigid heddle loom. I knew I wanted to get into weaving, but I was in a quandry about where to start, when Facebook friend posted a project she had done with hers, and a picture of the loom. I'll progress to a floor loom probably next year, but the rigid heddle loom allows me to learn the basics about yarn and weaving, and I'm trying out so many things with it! I think I'll always have it beside the floor loom, for certain projects. I also plan to get an inkle loom.

+Kelly Casanova i agree just learning and getting a rigid heddle first. There really are a ton of techniques you can do on this loom!! Yes! The Weaver's Idea Book by Jane Patrick is excellent, Inventive Weaving on a little Loom by Syne Mitchell is very interesting and then there are some books that are more project/garment focused from Interweave like Simple Woven Garments, Woven Scarves, and Woven to Wear (love that one). I usually try to get a book through the library so I can have a good look at it and decide whether I want to buy. I did notice that Interweave have a sale on books at the moment...

My first loom was an old 4 shaft direct tie up floor loom weaving width of 26 inches. I loved weaving on it, but my back hurt constantly from warping all the way through the piece, so for the last 2 years I have not woven anything. I am really missing weaving so I have borrowed two different RHLs and tried them out. One was a 10 inch cricket and the other one was a 24 inch Ashford. I want something I can use on a board across the arms of my recliner and the 24 inch was too big to use that way, but I want something bigger than the 10 inch cricket. I ended up ordering an 18 inch RHL from a guy on Etsy. I cannot wait to get it. I have been binge watching your videos in preparation to weave on it. I love your videos, they are very clear and have given me enough information so I feel like I will have many things to try and will not get bored using it. Thank you!!

Really helpful appraisal of the two looms. Many thanks from a total beginner. I have finished a card loom kit for a kindle cover, and just started stringing up a simple 24 peg loom with 2/1.3 nel linen thread, as it looks tough, and is dark natural colour. I want to make a small rug but not sure what materials/yarns to use for the weft. Can you suggest anything? If I keep on with my current enthusiasm, I think the rigid heddle loom would be a good next step.

Hi Kelly, I thought I'd give you an update after you so kindly did the video on choosing a weaving loom. I finally opted for an Ashford Knitters Loom 20" width. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first project, a simple scarf in an 8ply wool. The weft threads are a bit uneven but I'm sure that will improve with practice! I think cushion covers are next!
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 8 лет назад
Great Shelley! If uneven weft is your only problem after a first project, you're doing fine. Next time will be better, time after that better again and before long you will be weaving like a pro. Thanks for coming back to tell me about it, I really appreciate the feedback :)

Oh, how I wish this video had been available when I purchased my loom. I own the Kromski Harp Flip (24"), with an 8 dent & 12 dent heddles. I truly like the loom, however, now I wish I had purchased a 32" loom. Those floor looms are rather costly - ranging from $1,900-$3,000+, and requires space. The floor loom needs to be able to bring in finances into the home, to help pay for itself (LOL). As a new subscriber, I do appreciate your tutorials.
@KellyCasanova

It's a tough decision for sure. I had a plan when I bought my floor loom to make it pay for itself, but it hasn't worked out that way so far - I think you would need to put in full time hours to make a real income.

This was great video, thanks for the comparison. I became so frustrated working your Overshot Course with my Schacht flip loom. On this loom, when using two heddles, they become so unstable when both heddles are in the down position. This loom is not easy to work since it is missing a stationary holding notch for the second heddle's down position. Plus, you have to move the first heddle completely out of position forward in order to set the second heddle into this unsupported down position. In your Overshot Course, I was attempting to place the threaded dowel in place and as instructed both heddles are down, which allows this second heddle to move freely, crashing into the first heddle. Very frustrating, I lost it and had to stop. If I would have had a compairson between Schacht and Ashford, I would have when with Ashford. I have a smaller Ashford , two heddle loom which has the two heddle positions so correctly positioned to hold each heddle up and down at in their own place. Buyer beware of the differences in rigid heddle looms! I ended up thinking, maybe a small floor loom to replace this loom would be a good move.
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 2 года назад
I do know a lot of weavers who really love their Schacht looms - they are just different. If I had one, I might have been able to figure ways around the heddle position problem and be more helpful to Schacht weavers.

Would it be wise to get a small boat shuttle for a 32 inch wide Kromski Harp Weaving Loom with it’s Stand?
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 4 года назад
I don't tend to use a boat shuttle with my rigid heddle loom because the loom doesn't hold enough tension to be able to throw the shuttle like you can with a table or floor loom. It can be handy when you have a narrower width project with a finer thread and intend to pass the boat shuttle through from hand to hand rather than throw or "shoot" it across.

I have a rhl and love her but I’m planning on getting a ashford table loom, I’d just like to ask would you recomend a 4 shaft or 8? I thought 8 then I can have more choice but a lady just told me 4 is better as the 8 is hard to warp ( bare in mind she is selling a 4 shaft) Thank you for your time Jxx
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova Год назад
Hi Julie, I don't agree that 8 shafts are harder to warp, it's just more shafts. Having said that, on my table and floor looms I rarely use 8 shafts. There is just so much you can do on 4 shafts. If you eventually want to go on to more complex patterns, then 8 shafts is a good way to go. Also, if you want to weave 4 shaft patterns double width, you need the 8 shafts. Hopefully that is food for thought, all the best with your decision 😊

I'm not sure Brett, while the width would be great I've heard a lot of people complain about the reaching distance, it puts a strain on you. A wider floor loom is not a problem because you are throwing a boat shuttle but with a RHL most of the time you are using a stick shuttle. Perhaps it depends on your stature too - if you're tall and have long arms a wider loom may suit, but I'm smallish and short, so the 24 inch works well for me.

I feel silly asking, but my familiarity with looms abd weaving mostly comes from my experiences with seeing industrial hand weaving, in India. They used a lot of pit looms, there. I can already tell how much more complex it is to set the warp threads for those, but I'm curious if you know, in other regards, how it compares with a table loom. Obviously, a pit loom is an investment even beyond the table loom, because it involves changing the flooring. I'll be glad to try the rigid heddle style first, to test my interest. But given that I fall a bit into the historical archaeology camp and have an interest in traditional looms (Japanese and Chinese traditional silk looms, also), I'm curious if you have any insights.

An interesting question! I don't know all that much about pit looms, but if I had to compare I would be looking at a multi shaft (table or floor) loom as the more similar.

@@KellyCasanova Thanks! Yeah, I don't think anyone even sells pit looms in America (which makes sense). I appreciate your perspective. I've been interested in weaving for a long time, now, but I'd been living in others' space before, and I hadn't realized my options! It's so exciting to be moving in the direction of exploring different fibers and weave patterns and having creative control over my own cloth!

Knitting yarns are really good when starting out on a RHL, they are inexpensive too. Most RHL's come with 7.5 - 8 dent heddle and an 8ply (aran weight in the US I think) is perfect for this. I can't help too much with suppliers in your area as I'm in Australia, but there are lots of places you can buy knitting yarn.

Kelly, I wonder if you could quantify the waste difference between these two looms. Roughly how many cm/inches of waste do you expect from each?
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 4 года назад
With a RHL you could get away with as little as 6-7" waste, the table loom would be more like double that.

I have a lot of yarn I want to turn them into blanket or rug maybe mat for my dogs. Which one you will suggest?
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 7 лет назад
Which yarn or which loom? You can do blankets, mats etc or a rigid heddle loom, you would want a wider loom for this to get the width you need. For yarn, it is up to you. If it's a blanket you want to use yourself, consider how the yarn feels, it needs to be comfortable, not scratchy.

Kelly Casanova wow, I am looking at the kromski rigid heddle looms, and the ashford table loom. The yarn I have are worsted weight or thicker, nothing thinner than finger weight. By seeing your video and your reply I probably going for the rigid heddle loom. For the dent of the loom, what dent do you suggest? Thank you
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 7 лет назад
Most rigid heddle looms will come with a 7.5 or 8 dent heddle, which is a good starting point.

I would request that you raise the volume of your recordings so that people with all haring levels can hear what you say. Closed captions help, however, sometimes they are simply too fast to read, even with your normal calm, quiet voice. Also, better lighting would also be a help. My point of view: i am both dyslexic and elderly, hoping to begin a new hobby that might not cause my hands to cramp. (I am an old crocheter and can no longer do it because of hand cramping when i clutch a hook.)

Thanks for your feedback Jean. My older videos were filmed with basic equipment (actually, borrowed equipment, as I didn't have my own). These days I use specialised audio and lighting equipment, so hopefully you find these more recent videos better for you.
