What other category of pre-made drink mixes should I test on here? Or are there enough more margarita mixers I missed that I should just do a part 2? I've been seeing a lot of Whiskey Sour mixers coming up in my area recently. I'm interested to see how a 3 (4) ingredient drink can be simplified even farther than that.
There are tools that will help youtubers choose the right words for a title or the subjects of a video by looking at search trends (what words people search in youtube to get videos)
I’m firmly convinced that the reason there are so many commercially available margarita mixes has less to do with people liking margaritas, and much more to do with people liking the *idea* of margaritas. They bring to mind all sorts of things that are associated with them (island vacations, beaches, fun, sunbathing, all that Jimmy Buffett stuff). Every margarita mix I’ve ever run into in someone’s home bar is either long expired, or still unopened.
I love Margaritas. I've got limes in my fridge *right now* for the express purpose of making them. That said, I think you're wildly under-estimating the number of people who will happily eat garbage because it's convenient.
@@AaronMichaelLong Definitely true. My dad only knows how to make 4 drinks, two of which are named after the ingredients: G&T, rum & Coke, martini, Caesar. Does not care at all about chilling the glass or the drink, and "stirs" by gently agitating the drink and ice in a shaker for about 5 seconds. (Yes, we have a mixing glass.) And I suspect he is not even in the bottom 50% in terms of cocktail knowledge.
I like the stirrings one and consider it a makeshift margarita. But it's not much different than mixing it with mountain dew. It's a nice easy drink for when I get off work and don't feel like juicing anything.
Thank you, Greg, for acknowledging that everything is made of chemicals. That's my biggest peeve as a scientist. "Are there chemicals in that food product?" "It exists as matter, so yes."
This is just a common issue of a difference between colloquial usage and technical definitions of a word. What people want to know when they ask this if the product contains artificial or synthetic chemical compounds.
I blame years and years of bad marketing on people freaking out about chemicals in anything because they created a narrative that untrue to the real world. Especially in the makeup industry, clean beauty is a total scam. It's still had to be turned into something to be useable on the skin. It would be more honest if they did, here is make up but with a few common skin problem related ingredients removed. Everything on planet earth and beyond is a chemical.
@@Asa-bh7ziSimilar thing happens with brand names ("Kleenex" for "tissue" for instance) and fittingly, the word alcohol. Sure, you have some methanol produced in fermentation, but you're hoping it's not in your "alcoholic drink", and if you're drinking xylitol, something has gone horribly wrong.
You know I just want to say that these Yellowstone promotions are probably the absolute best sponsorships on all of RU-vid. Most of the time sponsors just interrupt the flow of the video no matter how hard the creator tries. But the Yellowstone Bourbon add's are so well done that it's just like a mini bonus episode sitting right inside the main episode of how to drink. Kudos to everyone involved.
Hey greg just wanted to say I used to hate mixed drinks and cocktails. I know you'll never see this lol but just wanted to say thanks for being just a cool dude and just keeping it simple and approachable. Your tips like making simple syrup and using 4 3 2 1 ratios and stuff have stepped up my game to the point where I boast several of my own variations of great stuff. Thanks man. My favorite is a shaken white russian with heavy whipping cream, russian standard gold, kahlua, an ounce of simple finished in a glass with ice, a bit of whipped cream and cocoa over the peaks. its awesome and your channel helps people make drinks that otherwise we just can't find at most bars in town!
@@muurrarium9460 yes it was awesome lol ive drank straight liquor most of my days because i just wanted to get drunk now i drink for fruitiness and stuff lol
Theres a pretty big market for these actually. Theres a massive amount of people who think these mixes are just what the drinks are supposed to taste like and think putting 3 items together is both too difficult and not sweet enough. I dont understand it, but working in a liquor store you find its a large amount of people.
Not a pre-made drink mixes idea but what if you made something like "what if the state of New York was a drink"-type series where you'd go through all the U.S. states with maybe 4 or so drinks per episode. Something where you'd try to characterize each state in the form of an original drink. Just an idea :D
Hey Greg im not sure how well that Yellowstone compilation video did but whenever this round of Sponsor from them runs out i for one am absolutely going to want another one of those, especially if you remake your favorite or add one or two bookending the pre-recorded ones. Always happy to see Ranger Greg :) I hope You, Mrs HTD, and your kiddos have a lovely spring-summer. (We barely get spring here in Tx so its just hot and wet then just hot)
It's continually amazing to me that one person will taste something, note how horrible it tastes and a friend will not only agree to taste it too, but will at times asknto partake of it's horribleness.
fun fact, Ranger Greg! while nearly all commercially produced macadamia nuts are grown on the big island of Hawai'i, they were originally brought to the archipelago by a sugar plantation manager in the 1800's from Australia. but, like SPAM, Pineapple, and feral cats, they're now a big part of the local culture.
Hey Greg. If you ordered a lava tube in Hawaii you would get a pina colada with strawberry pure in it, also known as a Miami Vice. Also, a restaurant founded in Maui called monkeypod has a signature Mai Tai which is actually made with macadamia nut orgeat. They also serve it with a passion fruit (lilikoi) purée dolloped on top.
I think we really need a “Death to Sour Mix” episode where you head-to-head battle different brand sour mixes to find the least bad one and then cap it off with “dude just use fresh lemon and simple I promise”
Hey Greg! Love this series. If you're needing a new series for the summer, can we go back to tiki? Your first series on it got me into tiki and I love the drinks. Something focused on punches or party drinks would be awesome for summer party hosting.
My mom works in flavor chemistry and someone in her office did an entire phd on rum flavors to give you an idea of the complexity Greg is talking about
Seeing the intro: Oh wow, this must take a turn for the worse at some point Seeing the first mixer: Oh Nevermind that’s the just first stop on the pain train
There are only two times i get EXCITED for sponsor segments. Tomska's Surfshark skits, and Ranger Greg. I genuinely bounced in my seat when I saw Ranger Greg. Keep em coming!
I found some mango jalapeño tequila and it’s become my favorite margarita tequila. It doesn’t taste like it’s back sweetened, but it is 35% ABV so idk.
Still hoping for that entry level booze video. I'm just building my bar and I agree with the advice to put the ingredients for the drink I want in there, but I still don't know how to pick which rum, tequila, gin, etc to make that drink good without breaking the bank. All I know is that the "standard" is sometimes "how college students get drunk for cheap" and not actually worth the price or "good."
Much like it's best to start with the ingredients you need for the cocktails you want to make, you should start with the rum/gin/tequila/etc. that you already like. You can always branch out later. If you primarily drink at bars and you're completely new to mixing your own drinks, you can ask the bartender at your usual haunt what they use
After going down that rabbit hole myself, I'd have to say this - Aged Rum - Appleton Estate Signature/El Dorado 5 White rum - Don Q/Flor De Cana 4 Gin - Tanqueray/Beefeater Tequila - Espolon/Cazadores Bourbon - Old Grandad 100/Wild Turkey 101 Hope that helps!
Appleton Estate, Plantation, Don Q for various young and aged rums that are affordable. There's also nothing wrong at all with a bottle of Bacardi white. Beefeater or Tanqueray for gin. Tequila is kind of hard because prices have been all over the place for my local stores lately. Rittenhouse Rye and Wild Turkey 101 are the rye and bourbons I generally use.
Anders Erickson has a good video on his channel called "How to shop for a bar on a budget" where he recommends good but cheap brands of most of the spirits you'd need.
Eli Mason has a Blood Orange Margarita mixer, which does move the flavor profile away from the strict margarita. Mixers are, in my opinion, the way for the lazy bartender, you buy the mixer, you buy the one bottle of alcohol. And it's somewhat nice to just shake up a fast one when you finish a hard day of work.
If I recall in the Margareta Matrix episode you found that certain combinations of tequila and orange liqueur, even quality ones, also created that tire fire, petrochemical, plastic taste as well. Would a different tequila give a radically different result? Greater than just the expect better tequila mix with bad mixer. Or, are they just inherently bad no matter the brand?
Hot damn we early for suffering today lads 😂 Edit: Gregs surfer bro vibe lined up perfectly with the stoney nature of the tres agave and by complete accident lol
I would love to know the science behind that burning plastic flavour in flavoured mixes/canned cocktails. I wonder if it's a preservative or something in thr citrus juice concentrate. It seems to be a very common tasting note in a lot of pre-made drinks. So common it leads me to belive its an "industry standard" ingredient
Oh gods no. Our local fries-shop had a mayo-special: weed-taste. It was the worst! (Yes,I live in that weird country where we put mayonaise on our straight-cut-from-real-the-potatoe-fries and use real butter on our bread.)
There's a ton of Old Fashioned mixes. In my experience, they've been....fine. Typically they're just sugar and bitters with some other flavor, and call for orange. Would love to see a video on that. There's one by William Sonoma that's pretty good.
This was my first exposure to your channel and I have to say that I really appreciate the authenticity and sense of humor. Your self-sacrifice has earned another subscriber. 😂
First view! Loved the ep! I'll never forget working at a pharmacy, I watched a guy walk in, open a margarita mix, and chug it virgin without paying. To this day it haunts me
Regarding the Yellowstone drinks…you could do a Haleakalā to contrast the difference between the two islands & volcanoes. If the top of Hawai’i is lush and active, the top of Maui quiet and dry, like you were on the surface of Mars.
I've heard people talk like that California/60s/surfer dude thing you had going only. Appropriately enough to it coming from your review of the Tres Agaves mix, it only happened when these folks were stones out of their gourd. Like, flying high as buzzard nuts. And it was not an attempt on their part at a silly voice or accent, they just actually weedmorphed their voices into that accent. Perhaps the originators of the voice were under the same influence.
Couple more notes: when I studied Spanish in college, all of my professors stated unequivocally that there were no silent letters in Spanish. So, according to them at least, Tres Agaves should include the s's. Also, I came up with a reason for canned cocktails: they are for camping. When throwing cans in a cooler is more convenient than bringing several bottles or having proper mixing glasses and whatnot, bring the canned cocktails!
I'm morbidly curious what your dump bucket taste like after an episode. Probably varies from episode to episode. In an episode like this one where they're all supposed to taste similar you probably just get an average of the flavors ( For Better or Worse), but some of the more diverse episodes would probably end up really weird
This episode makes me laugh because I work at a beer store and people come in all the time and ask if we have margarita mix. I politely say no, but most of the time I wanna call them stupid and tell them that it's not that hard to make their own margarita's without the mix. Seriously don't get why any of these exist.
I'm not all the way through, but I mean...they make buckets for mixing margaritas in. They're for getting trashed without drinking straight tequila. Often I'd rather have the straight tequila myself.
Loved the ep, love this format! Quick non-sequitor request tho: I had a gorgeous cocktail the other day, the italian job. Could we get a how-to video about or including that one? x
Reminds me of that Archer episode where he berates the waiter for bringing him a marg with sour mix and hes like "SOUR MIX? IN A MARGARITA? What is this, Auschwitz?? FIVE INGREDIENTS- Tequila, cointreu, lime juice, ice, kosher salt" and then hes like "sorry about the Auschwitz thing I'm under a lot of stress" and when the waiter says he's not jewish archer just quips back with "Did I ask for your life story?"
i feel like i already left a comment about how fun the ranger greg segments are but it bears repeating (and we love that sweet sweet algo-boosting engagement)
I'd love to see an episode on layered shots. I made one for Cinco de mayo and had to med vodka into the grenadine to get it to flow and simple syrup and tequila to get the layering right because creme de menthe is so sugary
Mixer surveys seem like a sound idea. The impression I'm getting thus far is that DIY is the best approach, but these sorts of mixers are found in any supermarket and people are bound to be curious if any of them are worth picking up.
Had another random idea. Yknow Jelly Bellies? Could grab a bag of mixed ones, pull two out, and try to create a cocktail based on a combo of those two flavors. Probably would've been better for Easter but who cares.
Our normal (my wife's) go to is Tres Agaves, but she likes a couple of dashes of orange bitters in there. Curious if you think that would make it better?
British novelist Kingsley Amis wrote a book about drinking called On Drink (I think he wrote two more on the subject but that’s the one I remember), and one of his maxims is that a ready-made ingredient shouldn’t be avoided if it’s good. But it does have to be good.
I like to think that Greg reciting vanilla ice lyrics is a form of revenge against a world that has made his drinking hellacious drinks like these necessary. 😅
I was at a beach bar in Cyprus yesterday and ordered a margarita. He filled a pint glass with Ice, then nearly topped it with non-label tequila, threw it in a blender and topped it with LIME CORDIAL! Then, to make it worse, if that's possible, he doused the top with table salt, not rimmed, just straight into the top of the drink. I had a beer next.
When I was in Australia, I was warned that most bartenders there go to class for a weekend. They aren't real bartenders, and they only know how to make the drinks on the menu. Don't ask, just order off the menu or get something in a can/bottle. Unless I know the bartender is a real bartender, I follow this advice wherever I go. It has left me with the ability to laugh at the pain of others on many occasions.
Yay, more mixers!!! I don't drink, really... the last time I had a drink was last April or so, and it was a few canned hard ciders and several glasses of a white wine a friend wanted to show me. I got tipsy, but I wasn't the one driving home, and I sobered very fast lol. Currently 8 months pregnant, and I love your vids! I like learning about alcohol, to have a better idea of what to try. I'm more on the sweeter side of drinks... I like Bay Breezes, white russians, mudslides and daiquiris... I enjoy some hard ciders though, sweeter wines, and I think they're called Lemon Drops... but Its completely fun listening to your tasting notes and getting broader ideas!
Don't usually post on videos but it's good to know that the Jose Cuervo mix is what made their bottled margaritas taste like absolute garbage. It literally tasted like I was drinking the smell of rubbing alcohol and the one I had was supposed to be a strawberry margarita! To date it is the only bottle of alcohol I didn't feel bad about dumping down the drain.
Mai Tais! I've not been able to find too many, but I'm sure you can do better. I think On The Rocks and Sazerac's premade mai tais are the ones I've had. The former tasted very nice, like pineapple candy, nothing like a mai tai. The latter was quite artificial tasting, not atrocious, definitely not a mai tai.
Hey Greg! Any chance of doing THC infused cocktails? Obviously a cocktail with alcohol and THC is a trip down flights of stairs but maybe homemade THC drinkables?
Not to be rude, but he’s already said no way to the THC cocktails. He’d be too gone afterward to function. That said, he did make a CBD oil cocktail for the Lord of the Rings Episode.
Not rude at all! I didn’t see the video that he said that in is all.🙂 A CBD infused cocktail sounds lovely! Also he could make specs for multiple cocktails and only drink his favorite, they could be low in THC milligrams, he could separate the shoots to one infused cocktail as a “night cap” during a day of filming, or any other number of solutions to make an infused cocktail be viable for filming. Just spit ballin’
I work for the National Park Service. Ranger Greg is consistently my favorite bit on HTD! My home park (and hometown) is Picture Rocks National Lakeshore and I would love to see your take on a drink for that beautiful place ❤
If you ever get the tools to do so try fully block freezing the margarita mix (liquid nitrogen may work) and use a shave ice machine to turn it into something amazing
"Margarita" is the Spanish word for "daisy". The Brandy Daisy was a drink from the 1800s. Other Daisy derivatives include the Sidecar and the Daiquiri.
