Before the _Sesame Street_ character, the name Elmo down here in the South was associated with an 1866 novel called _St. Elmo_ by Augusta Jane Evans. She wrote it in my hometown, and the stately mansion where she wrote it, El Dorado, was bought by some folks who renamed it St. Elmo after the novel. The novel was really popular in the late 1800s, and even had five silent film adaptations.
