LGA 775 PC upgrading problem chain: 1. Need a new graphics card! 2. For a new graphics card, I need a new processor! 3. For a new processor, I need a new motherboard! 4. For a new motherboard, I need new RAM! 5. Why should I upgrade everything in my old PC case, if it's a completely different PC! 6. Holy shit, I need a new PC.

Depends, really. If you come from having a single system and you want to keep having only a single system, hard drives (and possibly fans) are indeed the only usable component to carry over. I think it makes a lot of sense, however, to take an old system, put it in a new case and add a slightly better graphics card, and use it as an HTPC or something similar.

I have a computer so old it has 2 floppy disk drives, runs windows xp, has a pci slot card just to provide it with a wired ethernet connection (not built into the mother board), and it's best video port is vga (even on it's video card). The dust inside of it actually started to form together like cobwebs. Luckily it is an old thing I picked up for free and not my main computer.

I thought the stuff about people saying OEM PSUs were ticking time bombs was just them being paranoid but recently I learned my lesson the hard way. I used an old PSU from a very similar system (Lite On 300W) in my rig and the other day I tried to turn in on. Long story short It probably killed my MoBo, RAM, and CPU! So take it from me, wait for the new GPU, the new CPU, use a little less RAM for A bit and get a new PSU from a reputible brand. And remember kids, "cheap comes out expensive" - My Mom 2k16

Most of the ones Ive seen had 2GB of RAM so upping that to 4, 6 or 8 is always gives a nice performance boost.

Did HP pull a Dell? It looks like the layout is backwards. With the case door open on a standard PC, the "front" is on the right side and the back is on the left. I've had a lot of Dells, am I seeing it wrong? I didn't think HP had any proprietary designs.

+Koa Jurgensen do you really need 16gb of RAM? The majority of gaming pcs do not need more than 8gb and I also only started to hit that limit when I had 20+ aktive RU-vid Chrome tabs open w/ videos waiting to be downloaded and Adobe Premiere Elements running (and Photoshop "idling"). And probably some other programs..

2:10 I would say it is more dependent on the case and how old the computer is that you are upgrading from in addition to if the computer is store bought 'stock' or custom built. If custom built, the power supply and case could be totally fine. In most cases though, the video is most likely correct.

Fun fact: my current computer has a Skylake CPU and motherboard, a Nvidia Pascal graphics card, an m.2 SSD, ... ...and a mostly-unused DVD±RW/CD-RW drive salvaged and recycled repeatedly from an old Acer pre-built computer from nearly a decade ago. :P Also I have been using my old Cooler Master Silencio 550 case for 5-6 years now; new cases definitely look prettier and has better front I/O, but my current case has served me well all these years through different builds, as well as sporting unique features that are hard to find in other cases: an SD card slot, and an internal hard drive dock on the front.

My dad gave me a 10 year old gaming pc for Christmas. The processor, ram, hard drive, and fans were good enough to handle today's games, the only thing I needed, was a new graphics card. Which requires a new psu. So I upgraded from a 400w to a 600w psu, and got the evga Gtx 960 FTW edition. It works like a charm :)
@sake5140
@sake5140 8 лет назад
+bob cow can you tell the parts that are still reusable?
@bobcow1625
@bobcow1625 8 лет назад
Most of the parts were ok to keep. I kept a 1 tb hard drive, my Phenom II X6 1035T (2.6 GHz), 8 gigs of DDR3 memory, and the fans. I took out the sound card, in order to fit the GTX 960, and replaced the PSU. Most parts are ok to use, as long as they are cooled properly. If you have any more questions just ask.
@NickCarroll
@NickCarroll 9 лет назад
Often these old PCs have DVD or sometimes Blu Ray drives, and these can make good HTPCs. Even if they don't have a Blu Ray drive, those are dirt cheap now. I would just disassemble, clean out, then reassemble it, before putting it in an entertainment center. :)
@hellcat1988
@hellcat1988 9 лет назад
The old case can be used for an external rad box with some slight modification. Everything else except the power supply can be saved to swap into friends and families comps to upgrade older slower hardware. Side note: Format the hard drive as soon as you get it. You REALLY don't want to pay for the shrink you'll inevitably be forced into going to see when you learn just what your parents liked to look at before everything was saved online.
@zackarytj
@zackarytj 9 лет назад
You should take your dads old PC and max it out as far as it can go. Get fastest CPU that that mobo support, fastest ram and the fastest six pin pci power gpu that can fit and see what u get, and why? Just cause.
@Lagggerengineering
@Lagggerengineering 6 лет назад
You might want to mention how to reuse some parts in other ways than putting them in your PC. The PSU can be made into a simple 5V and 12V power supply for basically anything. Powering a LiPo charger, anything that requires 5V or 12V really. The Case... well... it's a case! You can put stuff inside of it and maybe even hide stuff inside of it and no one will ever know! The fans can be reused. The small heatsinks on the motherboard too. I am sure I am missing lots of things, but just think of the possibilities! And yes, I know that this is not for the average joe, but mostly for tinkerers, electrical technicians or hobbyists alike, but it would be nice to know!

If you know someone who wants a PC just for email, Facebook and the occasional youtube video, then upgrading an old PC is a good deal. The newest games however simply can't be payed on old PCs. First; cleaning is essential! And replacing small noisy fans is always a good idea. You can get 800g memory to replace 400g, and adding an inexpensive graphics card can do wonders for a PC with on-board graphics. These simple upgrades shouldn't cost more then $100-$130. A lot of old PCs have weak, lousy power supplies and definitely should be junked, cost: another $50 or so. BTW: Did you notice in this video that the motherboard had a USB-3.0 slot? I wonder if there's a USB outlet on the back?

Its a good idea, it can save you at least 60-80 on your build by using it asa a secondary drive, and you could even use the saved money to buy an ssd, since my 120gb ssd cost me only 45 bucks, and keep your OS and programs on there, and games on your hdd, since they don't need the added speed

2:44 Actually I did that once, kinda. Had a buddy with an old but decent computer. It was running very very badly and he asked me to take a look. After cleaning out the malware and viruses and running some good old ccleaner, it was still lagging bad on just the home screen. I decided it was that his integrated graphics card wasn't built to supply graphics to the flat screen tv he had hooked it up to. I grabbed an old unused nvidia graphics card from home and said if it worked he could keep it for $10. It matched up perfectly, and it still runs great.

My recommendations in this order (your needs will vary): If nothing is wrong: 1) Replace the OEM power supply after no more than 3 years. Cheap power supplies can fail and take your whole system down with them. Good power supplies are inexpensive and easy to replace. 2) Replace the CPU fan and case fan(s) after 3 years. Aftermarket fans may have a better lifespan than OEM fans. If your PC is sluggish: 1) Upgrade the RAM. Pre-built PCs often are built with too little RAM. 2) Upgrade your hard disk to an SSD. This is usually the single best thing users of old PCs can do to improve performance. No need to go nuts here, just get a reliable brand 500 GB or larger SSD to run your operating system and programs. Since swapping to an SSD is more complicated than upgrading RAM, I recommend upgrading RAM first unless you know your system has more than enough. 3) Upgrade the graphics card - no need to max out, just go with something that's a year or two old and in good shape. You'd be amazed what you can still do with a GTX 750 Ti, especially if you're currently using built-in/on-board graphics from 2010. 4) Upgrade the CPU. Either get the fastest CPU for your socket or one that is nearly the fastest. Like Kyle said, you may need to upgrade your CPU cooler concurrently. Remember! In some cases upgrading either the graphics card or CPU will require upgrading your power supply. I've seen pre-built systems with 200-watt power supplies that get overloaded when someone drops in a high-power component. At best, your system will be unstable. You may damage your components.

I have an old home built PC that I am turning into my new primary PC. The old Thermaltake Armor case is a real gem of a super tower case with a lot of volume inside including a lot of depth before the mobo tray or really oversized fans or 380 deep block radiators. I also installed an 850 watt Antek power supply right from the start. The case and power supply can easily handle any of the new PC configurations with lots of flexible placement of components. Only thing is the power supply stays near the top not the bottom. No problem for me. I love this old Themaltake Armor. I even have an add in bay mounted USB 3.0 / front connector panel that I added to the old case. To tell you the truth, I only encountered one device that prefers a 3.0 USB connection. I thought by now USB 3.0 was a major standard and USB 2.0 would be left in the dust.

Powemac G5 cases gets modded to fit ATX Motherboards! They just look too good. The PSU can be converted into a high power USB charger for every USB device in your home. The HDDs are most of the time still good enough for some Data. DVD Drives may be slow, but it can support that high speed. RAM: Keep it for the future to show your kids, but don't use it. Most old ram even if it is DDR3 is still slow. The Fans, if they work, are not too loud and fit your new PC, keep them. Processor, Motherboard and Graficcard are probably the reason you want something new, so keep them also for the future to demonstrate to the kids how slow PCs were. Heatsink: Put it on your Raspberry Pi. It will reach happy temperatures.
@RadiatingRedstone
@RadiatingRedstone 8 лет назад
A note with the ram, if you happen to have 2 sticks of the same ram, even if it is like 1066 MHz, you may be able to carry over to your new system by running it in dual channel mode to make up for the lack in speed. I have done this with ddr2 800 MHz sticks to match the speed of more modern ddr3 1600 MHz sticks. While I wouldn't recommend this to everyone, if you really need to save money, it may be worth it.
@leberkassemmel
@leberkassemmel 8 лет назад
RadiatingRedstone I had some ddr3 sticks, and i rather have ddr4 in dual channel. There is really no reason to not do dual channel. Ram on 2 sticks is really not that more expensive than it is on one stick.

I don't completely agree with your assessment of the PSU. While true that you shouldn't use it as the main PSU for a new build. You will want to keep it for a number of reasons. 1) Testing. If, in a couple of years you run into issues that could be caused by PSU problems it's handy if you have a spare PSU, even a crappy one, for testing to see if the problem goes away when you use another PSU. 2) It's pretty easy to get a PSU running even when it's not connected to a motherboard. So you can reuse an old PSU as a power supply for other purposes. My brother in law for instance has used one in the past to power a car radio + speakers in a self build portable (wooden case) stereo system to use at a building site he worked at. I myself currently use one to power an extra fan that's blowing extra air onto the motherboard of an old NAS that has overheating issues. You can potentially also use it to power external HD's or USB chargers etc. If you have a lot of devices that use their own 12V or 5V chargers then you can safe a little on your powerbill and wall socket usage by using a single PSU instead of a handfull of small chargers.

I think you are looking at it the wrong way, rather than reusing older parts from this PC it is easier to add new parts to make this PC better. Add and SSD with a fresh OS install and suddenly you have a much faster PC. You can find DDR2 memory for very cheap, add $20 into that. And if you can find a relatively new AMD CPU, a weak modern CPU/APU well now you have a good system, add a free Windows 10 and suddenly you have a PC that can last you 4-5 more years.................perfect for mom, dad, aunt, grandma.

These old AMD Phenom Comps are still good as a secondary workshop / office terminal if you're doing nothing much other than word processing, editing documents, Emails or for a school. Most often, just adding a 64GB SSD as your boot drive would breathe a new lease of life on these PCs or at least a fast, decent sized cache hard drive. And adding a low end Graphics Card can still give these old PCs a larger scope as a multimedia based PC / HTPC. A bit of TLC like occasional cleaning helps a tonne for your old systems to last even longer.

I upgraded my parent's 7 year old computers with new SSDs, GPU's, and the fastest CPU their old boards could handle. This drastically improved their system performance and video playback - even being able to play x265 video and stream HD youtube - and the costs are minimal. The SSD's were $50 a piece, the GPUs and CPUs were all ebay specials that ran $20-$30 each. They didn't need much, and these upgrades were able to handle their limited computing needs quite well. They'll get a few more years out of this old hardware before we need to look at replacements.

+TheExtraleague As Kyle said in the video, most power supplies in prebuilt systems are very low quality. They are designed to work for the warranty period and maybe a year or two beyond, until they fail without warning, possible frying your other components or maybe even start a fire. The reason this happens is because they tend to use cheap internal components and thin gauge wiring with little to no protection built in.

the hard drive is about the ONLY thing i've ever been able to salvage for any length of time, ultimately my original build was from the all IDE days and 20 pin power connector on the PSU as upgrades where done the power supply had to be swapped for a 24 pin unit to work with the new motherboard, then SATA based hard drives replaced the IDE, but until I just tore it down 2 nights ago prepping for the new build it had retained an IDE DVD drive, literally only thing still original at this point is the case, that I want to see if I can make work, but in all likelihood it's time for all new (except for the spare SATA 2.5" drive that I pulled from one of my old laptops).

An old hard drive can heavily slow down your computer, especially if you are a big user. Over time, as you erase/write data, some sectors on the HDD become unusable. On a magnetic HDD, it might not reduce the capacity by much but the broken sectors addresses are redirected to new ones that can be physically situated somewhere else on the disk which greatly affects the read/write speed. As for SSD, the same sorta happens but the speed difference isn't noticeable because how they work. So if you are the kind of user that frequently install/uninstall softwares or do other task that are heavy on the hard drive such as 3D rendering or video editing, replacing the HDD can be important.
@person7428

Pro Tip: reinstall the Os on the old drive and wipe everything else, keep the drive around, you have a copy of Windows on the drive, if the drive is slow or low in capacity remember that you can migrate the data off it, just store your copy of Windows on there.
