Which photo sells on Shutterstock? PART TWO: Comparing successful & unsuccessful stock photos

Which photos are more likely to sell on stock photography platforms? How can you earn more money? In this video, which is PART TWO of a video I posted recently, I compare photos that I uploaded on Shutterstock - stock photos that are constantly being downloaded vs. photos that don't sell at all. This side-by-side comparison examines similar photos that perform completely differently. The key? Finding a unique niche and dominating it.
I hope this helps you understand what is more likely to make you money on Shutterstock versus the type of content that is too saturated to perform well and get downloaded.

My most common question, which I have received several thousand times, is "how can I upload photos of people, properties and brands without a release form?" Before asking this question, please watch my video on commercial vs. editorial images! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WyWvDNDB3pg.html 🙂

I've mentioned it before, but I use the app "Easy Release" (costs $10 last I checked) and just have them sign the release on my phone. It e-mails a PDF to both me and them, and then I simply upload that PDF to stock platforms.

Nicole, if Washington Post wants that photo for commercial use what would have to happen? Do they need to grant you a property release and then you can list it as commercial? I've been thinking about it in the context of new power tools being put to good use and selling shots like that to brand owners.
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 лет назад
If you sell the photo to the Post itself, then I doubt you need a release form because they own the property. That would be kind of silly and superfluous. If you sell it to someone else then of course you'd need a release form.

Beautiful images as usual. This may sound odd at first but I'm surprised you got away with that photo which features "The Washington Post" text filling the frame. I did read on one of the stock agencies a few years ago (can't remember which one) that for editorial images, you can't have logos or brand names etc filling up a significant portion of the frame / can't have them appearing too large. So Ive always avoided that in my editorial photos.
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 лет назад
Some stock agencies don’t allow that (like adobe), but Shutterstock does. I’ve actually seen a few SS accounts where people literally just photograph and upload storefront logos. It’s okay as long as you upload them as editorial images :)

I love your content and your channel. Great job! I have a couple of questions which might be video suggestions. First how did you get the rights to shoot the Washington Post logo inside the The Washington Post building? Maybe you could do a video on how to get signed releases or how to approach the right people for releases? Second could you do another video on the other sites you sell stock images to, and rank them according to how you like interacting with them and your return on investment? Do you ever pay to upload photos for sale? Thanks again for all of your hard work producing shooting and editing.

Hi Nicole...When an image is competing with 5,000,000 others of same keyword search, such as ghost town, are search results returned in order of most recent to oldest? If so, is it possible to resubmit what is essentially the same photo but tweaked in edit, such as a slight color grading change? This could keep the same personal library current. I don't see this as 'cheating', as this is a business, and the consumer may not have time to go through 5,000,000 photos for my best image taken 3 years ago buried on page 83 of the returned search results. Please reply

What is your thought on sites like pexels? Lots of free high quality images. Could this ruin the hard work that stockphotographers are putting into it?
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 лет назад
Potentially, I'll have to look more into it! But Shutterstock is so cheap for companies to sign up for anyway that I don't think they would start searching the Internet for free sites. I work for a government organization that uses 2 different stock platforms and they honestly don't care what they pay... they just care about the quality of what they can get.

@baas3652 5 лет назад
Good video... again :) It would be interesting to know if you are planning what to photograph, or if you just photograph "everything" you see? I know you have to do some planning, but how do you do the planning? Do you get an idea and then search Shutterstock to see if your idea are oversaturated? Hope I gave you an idea for a forthcoming video :) By the way... it's fun to see that your channel are growing quite fast :)
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 лет назад
It's a mix of both. For example, I met some friends at the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. yesterday. Of course, I took photos of the blossoms (which are saturated) for myself and I took photos with friends. But while I was there, I also snapped a few photos of the tourists and the crowds, which I will certainly upload to SS. So I usually have a general idea of what will potentially do well, but I usually don't go out of my way to take the photos - I take them when I am out and doing something already. Thanks for the video suggestion:)

This is going to be kind of an abstract question... I have a program that allows me to use 3d assets from a game. I can use 3d models and effects to create an environment. (I take screen shots from those environments and edit them to make them look realistic). Would it still be possible to post those on Shutterstock or not?
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 4 года назад
I'm pretty sure that you would not be allowed to do that. You have to be the creator of all parts of the image. But I'm not 100% sure because I have not researched this topic in particular. I would recommend that you ask that question in the Shutterstock Forum.

Another great video Nicole, was wondering since I am a newbie to stock photography. The photo of the lady with the wine glass, do you need a model release for a photo like that since you can't see a face and make out who she or even he is. And do find you sell more Editorial photos Vs other kinds?
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 лет назад
Hi Mike, I did not have a model release for that photo. I definitely sell more editorial photos, but more than 80 percent of my content is editorial. So that would simply make sense. It is definitely a mix. The straws in particular are editorial because they are Starbucks branded. I create artistic images for use as backgrounds and textures, and have noticed that the image sizes uploaded by similar artists are larger, 5000 x 3333 pix as opposed to the lower resolution that my 12.2 MP camera can create. Do you think I need a camera with more MP to be able to complete?

You can definitely upload images with what you have, but of course, the higher quality your images are, the more likely they are to stand out.

On occasion. I have a pretty good idea of what has been photographed in my area and what is missing.

Do youtubers get paid when we skip ads..... if so I’ll be sure to watch the ads for all your videos

Why did Shutterstock accepted a photo of a ghost tour where you must get a ticket?

How do you manage your storage? Do you shoot RAW or JPEG ?

@Bitwise Magick That is a perfect explanation, couldn't have said it better! The number of hard drives I have is getting out of control.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have Zenfolio for unlimited storage and it's pretty great. But I have more than 20 TB of photos and videos at this point... with the 4k video files I create, I go through 100 GB in like a week!

Shutterstock has proven to be a pain lately. They rejected a picture because they said it showed a trademark, which they did not explain. They arbitrarily reject, and have become too hard to post with.

I know flowers are really saturated. Do you think its a total waste of time to take photos of flowers to upload?
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 5 лет назад
Honestly I think it's probably not worth your efforts. If you have some sort of rare species, or if you're photographing people interacting with the flowers, that would be different. But random photos of tulips and things like that.. probably not where you should put your energy. If you have the photos already it doesn't hurt to put them up, but I wouldn't go out of my way to obtain them.

@@NicoleGlass I think I knew this answer. lol Going to an Aboretum tomorrow and was thinking if it was opportunity. Its a pain to get releases from strangers. Maybe I will focus on other things during the trip instead of the flowers. Thank you!

@@RosasUtopia Even if you don't get releases, you can upload images of people taken in public places as editorial images. Or use yourself as your own model ;)
