Pokémon games are often filled with wonder, and that can even spill over into when the game is officially done, leaving us with the "postgame." However these extra bits of life squeezed into the games can vary wildly in how fun or relevant they are, so let's rank every version of the Pokémon postgame across the years and see where they've really made it an effort and where they kind of forgot to include anything...

HG/SS is the gold standard for what postgame in the pokemon series could be. Its depressing to see how after all these years we still havent seen a region be added into a postgame again, or fighting past protagonists as a final boss. Sinnoh being linked with Johto would've been a perfect time for that.
@emperorcubone
@emperorcubone 11 месяцев назад
True, but you could never JUST go back to Johto. If a Sinnoh game let you wander from Cianwood to Blackthorn people would ask "Why couldn't we go to Kanto!?" so maybe some other region one day. Perhaps visiting Alola in the Unova remakes, since 'Mercia?

16:15 I cannot overstate how badly I want this to return. The DexNav is amongst my favorite mechanics from ORAS as we can see the Nav so we can recatch the same Pokémon over and over. This came in real handy with Pokémon like Eevee that have multiple forms and are rare encounters.

B&W2's postgame is probably the most enjoyable for me. Rematching significant characters like Cynthia, N, Hugh, Colress, former rivals Cheren & Bianca? Check. A side activity in Pokestar studios that lets u make wacky & fun movies (& depending on ur performance can have different endings)? Check. Combat gaunlets (of which there're 4 of 'em in Pwt, subway, institute & white tree/black tower)? Double check. It just provides close to everything what I want & do after credits roll. Not to mention all the optional content available during the main game that u may have forgotten to do or skipped out on.

I spent most of my free time in ORAS's postgame when I was in high school. It was just so good. That was the only game I ever tried to complete to Pokedex in. The DexNav made it super easy, soaring was awesome and the best way to fly, the legendary encounters were awesome, and I even tried my hand at competitive battling because of all the experience I kept gaining. The Delta episode however, was the best part of the whole thing. I don't really care much for Zinnia, but man I appreciate that she has a story for you to explore. Also that little bit with Looker at the Battle Resort foreshadowing Sun and Moon was really cool. Hoenn has always been my favorite region, ever since I first played Emerald. I really wish that we did get a Delta Emerald, but either way ORAS - and even gen 6 as a whole - was a special time for me despite everyone's criticism. @@emperorcubone i think what does it for people, myself included, is the variety OF said battes. HGSS has a breat battle tower but its just SIMPLE BATTLING. like a boss rush kinda. where Emerald has what 8 building with a unique and mandatory way of HOW to battle. i think that point gets glossed over too easily. true it may not be for everyone, but for battle junkies, its the variety that does it for us.

@Oakesyrules
@Oakesyrules 11 месяцев назад
I feel Emerald and the battle frontier should be higher. They offer you challenges in different ways. You had the pyramid which was an edurance run, making you value moves to keep you healthy more and attacks with les power but more pp. The battle factory you had to be tactical and use what you were offered in rental pokemon, requiring of you a good understanding of pokemon and their stats and what you were lacking and what could help going forward. I will admit the others were more standard affairs, where you could win with regular tactics, but I've not come across much in the series that challenges me in a way as removed from regular play or competative play as the frontier. Plus there are all the contests, another way to make you build and riase pokemon in a different way, using different moves and synergies. And all the secret bases for fun and ways to express yourself. Emerald may be weaker in terms of postagme story and catching and legendaries, but they never were that appealing to me. You find the legend, you do that status move, you weaken it, then you sit there throwing ball after ball until it works, then move onto the next
@emperorcubone
@emperorcubone 11 месяцев назад
I guess that's just not something that appeals to everyone; I know I'm not the only person that thinks, "If I'm gonna do so many hours of battling I want something to show for it." Even if that's just a level 100 Pokemon, that seems better than renting Pokemon I can't actually keep...

I’m happy to hear someone speak so highly of US/UM. According to Nintendo’s sales reports, USUM did the worst in sales. From XY’s release in 2013 to SWSH’s release in 2019, USUM did the worst and I took that to believe that people liked the originals. I was baffled by that because I feel like USUM offers more context during both the main game and the post game

@Compucles
@Compucles 10 месяцев назад
Most people admit that US/UM are clearly the better games. It's just that regular S/M came out first, while the Ultra versions aren't different enough from the original versions for most players who already bought S/M to then "double-dip" on the new releases, even compared to Yellow, Emerald, Platinum, and maybe even Crystal. Releasing them as a pair of updated games instead of a single third version also didn't help with the marketing. Personally, I would've done the same had I not been lucky enough to hold off on my purchase of a Gen 7 game until after the Ultra versions had been announced.

Emerald has the best post-game. Why? The sheer variety of challenges in the battle frontier. All the other battle frontiers are just too straightforward. Plus it is fun. I spent more hours playing the emerald post-game than all other games combined.
@emperorcubone

Okay but help me out; like I said I didn't really play it much so what does "variety" mean? Is there more to do than just battling or is it like, this one does double battles, etc...

@@emperorcubone basically for people who love pokemon for battling, Emerald is high on the list because it provides variety on the challenges related to battle. I personally have spent 800 hours on Emerald, mostly thanks to Battle Frontier. It's basically the thrill of getting post-game Pokemon gym badges, but with a far higher difficulty. I've levelled up several of my pokemon to lvl 100 precisely because I want them to be used in the Battle Frontier. The satisfaction of beating a Frontier Brain is unlike any other.

@@daniaaalI miss breeding and training Pokemon to level 50 or 100 just for the frontier - breeding Pokémon with specific natures for the auto battle facility, putting together multiple of the same Pokémon with specific move sets for the other facilities, training up a Linoone for pickup in the Pyramid, etc.

Okay this might just be me or just be pointless, but where do you consider the latest games with DLC in regards to being post game. I know plenty dont like the idea, but it is cheaper than getting a third version or low quality sequel like the Ultra games. And its usually the content after you complete the main game. Even if you do like I do and make three users to play as all the starters and build new teams from that.
@emperorcubone
@emperorcubone 11 месяцев назад
Just because that part of the game in real life came out after most people beat it doesn't make it *official postgame; if you can go there before the credits role I'm counting it in the main game, like the Isle of Armor. (As for the DLC vs. 3rd version discussion that's a whole separate issue, but let's just say I'm not in favor of the $90 variant to fix a broken game...)

I spent so much time in HGSS that I have more memories of playing the post game than the main game. As for Platinum, there is so much content that the strategy guide could probably be used as a lethal weapon. I used to think XY had the best post game, but after seeing this video I kind of agree it was lacking compared to the likes of HGSS and ORAS. I don’t think it’s one of the worst though.

10:37 PLA has the best postgame story but it’s kinda cheating since it’s the true climax of the plot and the game rolls credits in a place that leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Even worse, the timing of the credits rolling meant some players simply stopped there and didn’t get their questions answered or their minds blown.

Personally I wouldn't have counted event Pokemon in older games as postgame because, even though yeah they add neat new areas sometimes, their access was very limited and nowadays, those areas will no longer be accessed unless you cheat your way to them. And as one of my personal standards goes, it's not cool when a game forces you to cheat/glitch your way to freedom.

My list at the top is similar, being: BW2, ORAS, HGSS, USUM, however unlike most people I generally find hgss postgame to be rather love it or hate it at different moments of time, whereas BW2 and ORAS are genuinely my most played games of all time. BW2 offers what I think will never happen again, being legendaries that you have to "stumble into." As a kid (ages 7-13) there was still tons to figure out and explore. Half the region was postgame, giving so many battle options, like the black tower which was a fun puzzle/battle game that was excellent for grinding levels, the subway which allowed for interesting battle mechanics to shine, and the battle houses riddled across the region. The rewards for the regional pokedex were infinitely more fun than before and id argue were better placed than any we currently have. I have many happy hours exploring and completing the pokedex, getting that guarenteed shiny haxorus, the shiny charm, etc. This along with the ridiculous amounts of legendaries to stumble across and the postgame kyurem/zekrom quest and the memory link is just absurd. The games were way more polished and enjoyable to a ridiculous margin compared to any other pokemon game and no other game has since rewarded "the exploration" since. ScVi got halfway there, but lacked/lacks the "fun" of it all and things feel far more tedious than they should, along with the lack of proper content other than "go make comp pokemon!"

I don't typically play through post-games; hard enough finding the time to complete the main story of games as it is, especially RPGs (Pokémon is an exception thanks to it's shorter length and less cutscenes). So it is funny to me hearing the... discourse that takes place over the concept of post-games for the Pokémon series. 2:06 - The Master Trainer was a distinct concept, but yeah, a right chore to train up all those Pokémon. The key problem with Let's Go is that it has no excuse for it's sparse post-game because it could have taken the content from Fire Red/Leaf Green's post-game content at the very least. 2:46 - That is how I actually experienced the Isle of Armor. My brother and I ended up doing all of it before we even took on the first Gym. Well, except the Kubfu part. I have no interest in Legendaries. 4:21 - X and Y was one of the few post-games I did... or at least, the Looker missions. Short, bit of an odd ending but a fun idea. 7:03 - I've warmed up to Fire Red/Leaf Green more over the years but I'm still annoyed at their arbitrary locking of newly made evolutions behind the post-game. Golbat just being unable to evolve into Crobat for unknown reasons until you got the National Dex was baffling. Sevil Islands was nice concept, particularly for giving Moltres a place of it's own and teasing Archer for his Gold/Silver role. 8:01 - Black and White is another of the very few post-games I ever did. The new areas were nice to run through, particularly as a means to finally use my Volcarona (went through the entire League with it as a Larvesta because of it's high evolution level), though I was disappointed you didn't get to fight the sages. 9:02 - Neat, Pokémoa artwork. I did play a fair bit of Pokémon Emerald's post-game. A child me attempted the various facilities of the Battle Frontier many a time with little success. I think won maybe one or two of the areas. I also agree that I don't quite get the hype for it; I'd rather go adventuring through a new area with my actual team and seeing them grow further. That said, the new characters were neat. 12:01 - Gold and Silver's Kanto is one of those "fun in concept, poor in execution" ideas. Johto's horrible level curve rears it's ugly head here and makes it more annoying than exciting. It is cool to see how Kanto has changed but the gameplay portion is where it's let down. 14:57 - Oooh, I can see this being a controversial placement on this list. Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire was the first time I heard folks complain about Pokémon post-game. I can see your points here, but a big emphasis on a lot of this post-game is catching new Pokémon... which given I'd have beaten the league at this point, I would already my full team of six pretty solidly set.

Gonna be frankly honest I actually hate those battle areas (frontier,maison, etc.). It’s not because of difficulty but because so items and tms are exclusives to them. I have had to dump entire potential team members because most of what I would have wanted to use them for is locked behind post game content instead of just placed in the world. I plan out my teams and held items meticulously and it infuriates me when I have to drop someone just because gamefreak couldn’t just litter the tms throughout the plentiful gameworlds instead of locking them away. Also never been one for post games I’m here for a story anything beyond that is a general waste of my time unless it’s just that good take Xenoblade Chronicles 3 or Tales of Arise for example more lore and a little more story.

They may technically have more content, but they sacrificed most of the improvements from Emerald to do it! I’ll be honest, I don’t think I really enjoyed any Pokémon postgame until Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet, and the only reason I enjoyed those was cuz the gameplay was strong enough to keep me coming back lol. The only one I can remember really enjoying other than SV and Legends was XY, and that’s probably just nostalgia cuz I started with XY (plus the Looker Bureau story is really good on a first time playing it, but it isn’t that fun if you’ve already done it lol).
