Haha this is rad! Was looking up a few tire options for my local track. Have a set of Yokomo DRC's that should arrive here today. Pulled this video and BOOM! My local track! Moved to Mt Juliet a while back. First time visiting it was this last Monday and pulled my old Sakura D4 build out of storage to try and get up there soon! Gonna be fun not peeling around on asphalt anymore!
@@RoadsideRC gonna try to come by after work tomorrow around 7-8ish to do some shakedowns til close. If youre there and see a Sakura D4 with a two tone teal S13 shell with a black hood and trunk come say hey!
Hey Troy. I so agree. The first run 🤔. I said to my self … what are you doing-it looks like you are racing for time and don’t see any drift formula Characteristics. Love the slower DR. I would love to come and drift with you. You sure are calm and collective on the car. It shows your stile well. Easy to get in your line.
I need to!!! I did this carpet, and I have done one on p-tile. The asphalt/concrete should really be next. Where do you drive more? Garage floor type of smooth concrete, or outdoors?
@@RoadsideRC food for thought, we have roller hockey rinks locally that have a plastic surface. I've been entertaining the idea to test tires on that plastic surface as we currently have no dedicated tracks locally and have lots of (unused) roller hockey rinks, lol
OMG, where did you find tires in stock?! Glad that you mentioned drifting is not all about speed, its about getting into the door and tandem. Noticed on this test Troy that only inside clipping points were used on the track. Can you mix in some out side clipping points and tandem action into the testing?
I run 90% of the time on cool inside vinyl plank flooring, it's both "textured" and slicker then a ripple in a slot bucket. My preferred "fast" tire is the MST gold, anything softer is too fast. (yellows are crazy on it) I like the MST silver for floatier drifting and GS Racing LF-3 is my new "super floaty" tire for it.
Very helpful for the beginner thanks Troy, for those starting out would you suggest taking a few brands to a new track? Each brand would have a description on their tyres for the intended surface when buying new sets? I will be driving on asphalt in car parks for practice before track days.
great and informative video, but you cant really say that a certain tire is best because you need to take into account peoples driving style, shocks, chassis, setup and the temperature of the surface. The guys I used to go concrete drifting with (story for another time and place) all ran different tires because the recommended (DRA) tires didnt work for everyone without hours of tuning. then when we make the jump from the concrete to the carpet its the same story we have no recommended tire but guys are running everything from MST, yokomo, reve d, DS racing and even cheapies from ebay because they work for them. Its tough getting guys to run side by side on tires that dont work for them and impossible to get people to agree to a set tire. what you have found is the best tire for your car, setup and style, some of the other guys in your group may find the same others may not and will have to experiment. The hardest part is trying to find a base setup that allows for changing between surfaces and tires. You will struggle to get everyone on the same setup simply because not everyone drives the same way all you can do is try to get guys to learn fineness on the radio and try to manhandle the cars to being side by side. My yokomo dy2e is great on carpet but it is tough to drive on the concrete but its possible with some fineness on the radio, I like the hunt for the right tires its a good hunt and a fun hunt because I like to experiment with my tires and see if I stumble across something special. If I were you I would give the LF5 ago they may have more grip especially when they warm up with the friction but I wouldnt go lower than the LF3, I have some LF2 and most of the time its like being on ice.
Interesting! Here is where I disagree with you. On our previous 2 tracks, we all got MUCH better, and we're able to tandem easier when we all switched to a "spec" tire. Honestly, from my experience, it really is a smart move.
@@RoadsideRC I agree that a spec tire can work, look at irl racing F1, v8 supercars in Australia to name a couple have 1 tire manufacturer and set compounds but the difference is the competitors and teams are forced to use them or can't compete. We are in a hobby it's for fun and it can be hard to get everyone onboard, some people can't and won't run specific tires and won't be swayed. And the other issue is speed unless you have a set track that doesn't change week to week you will always have a speed difference due to people's different equipment that won't change with a tire, changing everyone onto the same tire either speeds up or slows everyone equally because the tire is the only change. Your lucky from watching your videos I can see that many of tour fellow drifters are running pretty similar lines, speeds and styles and you have the luxury of both surfaces being in a controlled environment which makes it a little easier. And most of all everyone wants the same thing. I'll message you on instagram later if I remember.
So hoping you can help.As we are just getting into drift,we have a tight industrial weave for now,we had CRC like you have, its not as tight but tight. We race SCT,4x4,buggy .. My problem ,IMA NEWB to the Drift,I assume the tires really matter. I built a MST FXX,took your kinda budget build and went with it. quikrun 60amp,had HW 10.5. Protek servo laying around So the tires that came with, hard plastic=0 carpet traction(am i correct]?cause I cant get the car to go any place semi fast, just spins out. And now that I think most likely same problem, once i start a turn under any real throttle, the ass SWINGS right out 180! Would the carpet tires help out lots?
@@RoadsideRC I have 1 built in to my radio, radiolink rc4gs..currently off..its a good gyro, used it on a SCT on a dirt track. And after watching the full vid after typing,..Im betting it is a tire issue,,, It came with super hard plastic drift tires,MST brand, I assume they come in all kits and RTR edit part 2= after watching 7 mistakes....steering throw,to much low end throttle, gyro off. And for sure tires..4 out of 7
Which LF from Ds racing ? Cause I know my NGE with the DRC (our normals) is a traction monster tho I could play with motor angle to help that a bit. Also when ya heading back to track 😬 itching for some good tandem action
Can anyone recommend a tire for my redcat thunder drift car? The stock tires are fine for a small area like my garage but I want to get some more speed on my polished concrete shed floor. I have a large sized track layed out and need some more grip/speed.
