I really like the BittBoy and I really like the Odroid-Go. Which one do you prefer? I lean closer to the BittBoy based on the visual aesthetic and build design, however in terms of emulation they are both quite similar. The screens both have pros and cons to them. The colour representation is slightly more accurate Odroid, but is massively let down by the poor resolution. Battery life is going to be more or less the same across all of them. Loading roms is almost identical on all of them, except the Odroid has some neat folders to put the roms in. The Odroid requires a bit more work software wise too.

I really like the BittBoy and I really like the Odroid-Go. Which one do you prefer? Out of just those two I would do odroid. I like the OS more and the thinness. Little larger is actually a perk in my eyes. Still smaller than a real Gameboy.

You know, you've inspired me. I just recently built a gameboy color with a backlit display, new shell, buttons, membranes, the works. something that really tied it together for me is the everdrive x7. It does all the things that you want from a system like this, while still using the original gameboy color hardware, so it runs the games 1:1 from what I can tell. It hasn't stopped me from collecting games, but having the one that I can just grab and go is very useful for me. I am going through chemotherapy right now and it lives in my bag, ready to go whenever I need it. It wasnt cheap, but worth every penny to me.

Can't believe I missed this video for 2 years. I have all 3 & have made custom GBA romsets in 4 files for the Retromini (1 for GB, 1 for GBC, 1 for Game Gear, & 1 for NES) since the firmware doesn't natively play them. Just got a Odroid Go & with the newest CFW it's amazing

To me, having a headphone jack is also very important for any portable. If I remember correctly bitt boy is the only console that has the headphone jack. I'd want to be able to hear my game without bothering people around me.

@Ben Leininger yes. I had quite some problems with screen tearing when I first got it. After I did an firmware update, the problems were gone, at least in my experience.

Very interesting teardown, the little screen on the back of the main screen is because the lcd is recycled/meant for an old flip phone (mounting a small lcd on the outside of a flip phone so you can check notifications/etc was a common design). I'll have to see if mine has that screen when it arrives. I'll probably end up removing it though to squeeze out a bit more battery life.

I think it's possible that both screens share the same backlight, otherwise why bother to wire and power the one on the inside? Kind of what happens on the lit apple logo on macbooks.

The speed-up and slow-down comparison should have been done in post-that way, you could time them to the button presses in the timeline of your video editor instead of attempting to assume you pressed the button at the same time.

I mean, that handheld seems to just be an rs-97, which is actually a pretty good handheld if you put custom firmware on it. Especially if you prefer the GBA form factor.

@@schpek I'm not even sure that was him, I think that's just how the console comes as standard. You have to put the custom software on which has better emulators to make it good.

Retro Mini does play GB and GBC, but it's a bit of a hassle. There's multiple tutorials on YT. Btw the Odroid does other stuff than Emulation. It runs an ESP32 so you can write your own games in the Arduino software. It also runs Doom (and Quake IIRC). You can even attach a little keyboard and emulate C64! For makers and programmers the Odroid is super interesting, if you want all types of GB consoles go for the Retro Mini, for the best original GB experience I would go with the BittBoy v2.

I can't decide between the bittboy and odroid. That screen on the bittboy and the form factor are so cool, but the fun of building the odroid (something I can do with my daughter), 1200mAh battery, and the fact it suspends gameplay instead of completely exiting when the power is toggled is something that would come in very handy.

I'm curious if your thoughts have changed since the Bittboy updated so much, especially if you get the custom firmware for the 3.5 that adds like 10 new systems, flat PC games, and rumble. (I know the rumble is hardware and not software, but the firmware the Bittboy ships with doesn't have working rumble)

Excellent video. I was tempted to get an Odroid go for the additional emulators but given the button layout I think that would be a mistake. I'll stick with the Bittboy. Also if you don't mind you should send back your feedback to them. They should keep improving the features. Perhaps ask if there is a way to do a firmware update. Thanks!

The so-called "Game Boy Color Light" was made possible by BennVenn, and my backlit Game Boy Color was one of the first he made, it's the atomic purple one with power LED in his Facebook video uploaded in July 2017 (IIRC)

I got the bittboy 2.0. It's cool. The Retro Mini would've been good if it had a better processor. It has bad frame skipping. The RS-97 with Dingux should be considered.

At this point I wouldn't swap out my SP, Micro, DSl or 3ds out for any of these. Though as curio's they have an appeal to me. When they take the carts themselves I may get one. Excellent video fren. 🙊🙉🙈

One thing to note about the ODroid is the screen maxes out at 30fps. Not sure if this is the case with the other two devices there.

i have the 3,000 retro mini console not the game boy look a like.. my problem is some times i turn on the power button the green light turns on but the system does not turn on? i have to take out the battery put it back in to turn power on & play?

@@almarkowbender Can't see the screen on an original GBA (if ever a screen needed a backlight, it's the GBA), and hacking a PSP requires knowhow, it would be nice if there was just an out of the box option you know? And there's enough buttons that they could use the extra front ones as shoulder buttons, just reroute the controls so it runs through those. Probably a better option than the RetroMini's cramp-inducing shoulder buttons.

The Odroid has Bluetooth and Wifi on the board. The MSX emulator on it has 2 player mode over wifi. I really hope they can add 2 player over wifi for gameboy and nes on the odroid.

Could you show us the Moqi i7s? Sadly its $360 on Ali-express Its an android device that can play NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, PS1, PSP, Atari 2600, DC, C64, Sega 32X, Sega CD, Genesis, MasterSystem, Bandai Wonderswan / Color, MAME, FBA and can play Saturn, Gamecube, and Wii out of the box.

Honestly I’m just going to wait and end up getting one of those raspberry pi’s inside a GBA or GB shell. Basically i want to play everything up to the GBA. They can even play PS1 titles... That or maybe a modded Vita or 3DS. But i like the smaller form factor of the GBA shell

I am not convinced by the odroid go. It lacks several things to make it a good value/usable console : earphone plug, volume cannot be adjusted in small steps, lack of cpu power which limits its use to 8 bits consoles.

The retro Mini plays game boy and game boy color games! You must only convert it to gba with a program. Then He play it too. But The retro Mini plays sfc, sega, nes and cp1 games too

It's a shame there aren't more of these devices that can do full speed 16bit emulation. My GCW zero is getting long in the tooth, and I never really liked the design in the first place. But nothing has really been able to outdo it for years.

I know this is the boring option, but after much research, I have come to the conclusion that the best retro gaming handheld is an Android phone with a bluetooth controller. Any phone from the last couple of years is going to beat the pants off most of those handhelds when it comes to performance and screen size/quality, and the battery life will usually be superior too. The other advantage is that you always have it with you. You don't have to remember to bring it with you or charge it. For controllers, I always have an 8bitdo Zero in the coin pocket of my jeans, and I have two full size controllers; one for home and one that I keep on my desk at work. It's not as sexy as having a new handheld, but it is cheaper (just buy a couple of controllers) and a lot more practical.

I don't like the small size on the BitBoy, it looks like it would be kind of difficult to hold in your hands and play for extended periods. If they had a bigger form factor, I'd probably buy one.

The availability of portable batteries and outlets makes this a little less relevant in 2019 though. I have both and have equal fun with both. The new CFW for the bittboy makes it worth it.

For retro gaming I wouldn't be buying any of them, I'd be going for the GPD XD. It's a larger cost of course but it can do so much more, not only playing the systems shown here but up to Dreamcast and PSP.

I prefer my Psp-2001 for all my emulation needs. It really is an awesome platform for emulation. I got mine for about $40, I bought a new battery cover and a battery, as well as a big memory stick. So in total I spent about $60 to play emulators on it.
