Which Salt is the Healthiest? Doctor's Review of Kosher, Pink Himalayan, Sea, Table, and Salt Substitute
This week we are discussing five different kinds of salt: Kosher, Table Salt, Sea Salt, Pink Himalayan and Salt Substitutes. The most recent recommendations tell us to stay under 2300 mg of sodium a day, but the average American eats over 3400 mg each day, and many of you out there may be eating way more than that.
Did you know that one just slice of pizza from a restaurant is around 957 mg of sodium? So keeping your sodium levels down is important to stay healthy. You can find sodium information on every package in the grocery store and from nutrition information listed on restaurant websites.
But to flavor your food there are many varieties of salt out there to buy. So which one should you be choosing? Watch the video now because we are going to dive into 5 different versions.

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”. The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way.
I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and RU-vid sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 RU-vid subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

Thanks, Doc, this was a great video and an important topic for those of us who have kidney disease. I just finished for the third time, in two years, recovering from minimal change disease. What a nondescript name for a disease. Thanks again for all you do for our community.

Thank you so much @malcytull and that is a good choice. I like the crunchiness of that. A little goes a long way.

We are using the Benson's salt substitutes and seasonings. All natural herbs and spices, and no potassium chloride or other chemicals. Their table salt substitute is called Table Tasty. We like it.

@denisemayer51 I will have to try those and do my own little taste test. Sometimes the substitutes can taste a little strange to me, so I am excited to try that out.

Since I'm not using salt to cook with, I enjoy finishing some foods with a tiny bit of Himalayan salt. Its satisfying. I'm Stage 4 CKD with a eGFR 22 so salt subs aren't an option but they taste terrible anyway. I work really hard to keep my sodium intake under 1200 and it's really hard so salt is special use only.

You are doing great @lynnallen1315 - I really enjoy the pink salt too. It is fun, colorful and I like the crunch it gives.

Dr, I haven't added salt to a dish at a restaurant in over 50 years due to Blood Pressure issues. I have added limited salt to a pot of soup or other dishes, using salty food instead ot salt works. Canned veggies also give more than enough salt for any dish in my opinion.

@ronaldguffee8696 It sounds like you are doing great. I think that is a great tip about the canned vegetables. Thank you for sharing.

What do you think about Celtic sea salt?
@thecookingdoc
@thecookingdoc Месяц назад
If you like it - then you should use it sparingly. It is very similar to most other salts. It has a tiny bit of minerals versus table salt.

Table salt and 3-5 drops of Lugol’s in your morning coffee!

I want to know if Celtic salt is better or Himalayan?
@thecookingdoc
@thecookingdoc Месяц назад
That is tough, there don't seem to be much difference except pink salt has a tiny bit of minerals in it. I think it just boils down to your preference.

It is amazing Cliff how our taste buds change over time. I agree with you. Sometimes going out to eat is difficult to me because of how much sodium restaurants use in their foods to make them appealing.
