Dear Audiophile Junkie Community, We are truly sorry that Joseph was unhappy with the custom paint job on his Cygnus speakers when he received them in August of 2022 after a longer than normal wait - like many companies during the pandemic we struggled to keep up with demand and suffered severe supply chain delays, disruptions, and labor shortages. A day or two after Joseph’s speakers were installed in his house we received some photos from 3mA Audio showing areas where he was seeing paint-polishing marks on the side of the speaker and some small dots in the paint which were described to us as bubbles. It was difficult to see the issues in the photos but since the customer was not happy and because we could not understand what could be causing the “bubbles” in the paint, we decided to forgo further inspection and offered to build a completely new set of replacement speakers under warranty. We offered to let Joseph keep his existing Cygnus speakers while he waited for the new speakers and said we would cover shipping of the new speakers and the return of his original speakers - we had already paid for the original shipping of the speakers to 3mA audio to make up for the fact that he had to endure a long wait to get his speakers. Joseph agreed to this plan and we told him we would get him a new pair of speakers as soon as we possibly could. We did not have any Cygnus cabinets built at that time, so it was not possible to give him a precise ship date on the new custom painted cabinets. However, and most importantly, he was not put "in the back of the line” as stated in the video. He was actually in the front of the line and was going to receive very the next pair of Cygnus we could deliver. We take responsibility for not ensuring that this information was clearly delivered to Joseph and in retrospect it appears this communication failure is responsible for a lot of the frustration Joseph experienced. About two weeks later we heard from 3mA Audio that Joseph had decided he did not want to wait for new speakers and that he wanted a refund. We were disappointed that we let him down but we immediately, not eventually, sent 3mA Audio a full refund (on August 23, 2022) and we paid to have the speakers shipped back to our facility. When we received them we did find that there were some polishing marks that we should have seen in our quality control inspection process. We also found some very small spots in the paint where bits of dust had settled into the paint when it was drying. These issues should have been caught in our quality control and we regret that they were not. Another customer of 3mA Audio ordered a pair of our Orion speakers in the same bright red color that Joseph ordered. When those speakers were unpacked at 3mA Audio that customer also complained about the appearance of the red paint, in this case about the appearance of the assembly seam between the front and rear portion of the carbon fiber outer cabinet shell. We explained that this seam always has some visible differences in the surface texture because it is a hand-painted area over the structural adhesive that we use to connect the front and rear cabinet panels together. We have used this construction method in our top-level speakers since the mid 1990’s. We explained that unfortunately the bright red color was particularly prone to showing these surface texture contrast differences. This customer also decided he did not want to keep the speakers and wanted a refund. We immediately provided a refund and paid to have the speakers shipped back to us. Again, I want to apologize that Joseph was disappointed in his speakers and our response. We did our very best to resolve this issue with Joseph through our dealer 3MA audio, and I believe it is incorrect to characterize our company as negligent or reluctant to provide appropriate customer service given our fully supportive response to both customers. Sincerely, Josh Clark President Rockport Technologies

Josh, You and Andy are stand up people and build high quality products. The sound and build quality is top notch. Things happen it is unfortunate that this was aired in public. At the end of the day the dealer should take care of the client and deal with the manufacturer. I know that personally if I have ever called Rockport I speak to one of 3 people. Andy, John or you. The fact that you were going to build a new pair of speakers and offered for Joseph to keep the original pair until the new pair was ready is more than fair. @dean Actually, it's YOU who must not have a brain. Your intuition is so off it's either delusional or intentional. This was a big hassle both in money and time for 3mA. On top of not realizing any sale and all the time spent waiting and setting up the speakers, they had to give up a loaner pair of speakers to keep the customer happy who had already sold his previous speakers. It's also sheer folly to suggest anyone but Joseph picked Magico. He wasn't "manipulated" as you implied. Ironically, what sold him on top of the factory tour that he mentioned was another person who lives in Houston who's house he visited with the M series Magico. 3mA didn't even have the M series. He bought it based on that demo at a person's house. Of course, people like you think you know everything and desperately want to be the smartest guy in the room... But guess what... You only end up embarrassing yourself and making it worse for the company you're trying to defend. The notion that 3mA fabricated paint issues and a disgruntled customer shows just how clueless you are... or how desperate you are to spin some kind of narrative for whatever warped bias you hold. If you don't care about what happened, that's fine. You can ignore it like any Yelp review. However, fabricating a totally BS story to suit a narrative won't go unanswered by me and maybe even 3mA and Joseph because it's insulting to make such accusations with zero proof. If you think you're helping Rockport, you're not. They admitted to the paint problems, QC and communication issues. Kudos to them, and you should let them and their statement provide their side. Your primitive attempts to be a hero only makes things worse for them and yourself because it will invite further replies and defenses. Is that what you really want? If so, I guarantee you will be embarrassed by your lack of knowledge, judgment and intuition. BTW... You say almost no other company would give a refund in the hobby... Name a few... You can't because all you wanted to do was run to your keyboard and pretend to know stuff you don't and spout hyperbole about no others offering refunds. I would quit while you're behind, but I'm happy to dedicate a video to your hypothesis and expose just how clueless it is.

Until now, I've never heard of any issues with Rockport products or service. Rockport has produced some highly acclaimed and desired products, but your very informative conversation with Joseph exposes quality and service problems that I never would have associated with this iconic brand. However, I'm glad that Joseph recovered from the "Rockport Fiasco" and put together a great system featuring Magico M3s. The Guiding Lights at Rockport need to pay close attention and right the ship before it collides with an Iceberg.

I had never heard of issues either and heartily recommended them... Including their turntable. I think Covid may have caused issues. I'm not sure if they lost an in-house painter or staff that could have impacted things. There likely is some explanation for the quality issue, but I think everyone involved got more concerned about the response more than anything.

As I mentioned in the video, I'll be getting 3mA's side and welcome Rockport's response. I do think they eventually gave Joseph and my other friend their money back and took back the speakers, but the initial excuses, spin and reluctance gave my friends a very bad taste in their mouth. They are used to buying luxury goods and own other audiophile products where these issues haven't occurred and hard to fathom at these prices.

Rockport's treatment of these two customers is inexcusable. 3Ma is so much better of without that line of products. A pair of replacement Cygnus should have been flown to the dealer, while they send an RA to fly the blemished pair back. Blackball Rockport!

@@spacejaime you do understand that this finish is custom and it takes time to paint a replacement. Some finishes take multiple weeks to paint. Ironic you use the word "spin" when that's exactly what you're doing with this video. Your comments here and your own input during Joseph's recounting of events seem like an effort to minimize the nuances of the situation and villainize Rockport. A good reminder for anyone that follows RU-vid personalities: they have an agenda too (drama = views). "Audiophile's QC issue solved quickly and generously" doesn't make a good headline, I guess. From 3mA and Rockport's accounts of the issue, Rockport did everything they could and went above and beyond to make it right. If offering to pay for shipping both ways on an advanced replacement pair of Cygnus isn't enough then honestly I don't know what is. Joseph's impossible expectations reinforce negative stereotypes about audiophiles and make it incredibly hard for average hobbyists doing research to find the objective truth in anything. Problems happen. Exploiting them for your own viewership is just lazy, low-effort clickbait journalism. I suppose it's what we should expect from any RU-vid personality.

@AudiophileJunkie
@AudiophileJunkie Год назад
I won't speak for Joseph, but I suspect he felt like he was getting something less than what he paid for. To keep his money and put him back at the end of the line again was an unacceptable option and probably made him feel like they were holding his money versus just offering a refund as an option to start. As he mentioned, no discount or other courtesy was offered for the screw up so they were keeping his money for an inferior product.... Not just a few days or even weeks... They wanted him to wait months! Again, he had already waited a long time and based on the excuses given for the defect, he likely had little confidence that waiting longer would solve anything. If he didn't want a speaker with defects in paint in his house for months, you may not care, but many people do... Especially at the $60k price tag and reasonable expectations for such a price point.
@klewja
@klewja Год назад
@@AudiophileJunkie I own speakers at this price point and understand how he feels. I want everything perfect. I think that them offering a brand new replacement is fair but a discount would have been an olive branch. It is also on the dealer to make it right and deal with the manufacturer. I had an issue with a driver in a Magico speaker and the dealer dealt with it. I did not need to get involved. I know that if you call Rockport you will likely talk to either Josh, John, or Andy. I hope that they share their side of the story as there are always 2 sides to the story. At the end of the day of course 3ma got him a new speaker. They don’t want to loose a sale. They also made more on the sale of a pair of M3 and it helps them with their new relationship with Magico as well. Both Rockport and Magico build incredible sounding speakers. Alon actually started out as a client of Andy and Rockport. Look at the earlier Magico designs there are quite a few similarities. I am glad that Joseph is happy with his new rig at the end of the day.

It doesn't mean everyone will have the same experience, but they soured two guys who spend a ton on audio and have owned (or currently own) mega dollar speakers from B&W, Estelon, MBL, Magico and more... This is the only brand they've had an issue with, so the logic of "I've never had a problem with Rockport" applies in reverse too. It’s not totally surprising to me that some people were confused about whether poor finish on the speakers were the Rockport’s or the Magico’s. Here are my thoughts on the matter: 1. The quality of the videos on this channel is not very good, because for one thing they are way too long for the actual content the videos contain. They just seem like rambling ad-hoc conversations that could be condensed into one third of their actual length while communicating the same information. So the effect is that most people probably don't want to listen to the entire video to extract 5-10 minutes worth of information out of a 25 minute video. But making the video tighter (and shorter) would require some effort in making the videos, or in other words some better quality control. By no means is @AudiophileJunkie the only audiophile channel with this problem, but a lot of people like me try to watch as many RU-vid videos as I have time for each day, on a variety of topics (not just audiophile stuff) and if each video were 3-5 times a long as they need to be for the information given, then that would cut down on my ability to watch other channels (on different topics). There is a reason why @AudiophileJunkie only has a little over 12K subscribers and a channel like @Andrew Robinson has 324K subscribers. Robinson’s channel is carefully scripted, and he probably puts in 3-4 minutes of preparation for each 1 minute of the actual RU-vid video that airs. Since we seem to be talking about quality control a lot in this video, I think this is a fair criticism. The fact that the @AudiophileJunkie owns a CPA firm that keeps him busy in his real job is not much of an excuse IMO. 2. The audio quality of this video is horrendous, as Joseph was not mic’ed up and it was extremely difficult to hear what he was saying. That this channel is about extremely high-end audio is more than ironic, and the poor audio quality of the voices in a RU-vid video is a critical flaw. No wonder some people weren’t sure what speaker (Rockport or Magico) had the bad finish. Again, I have seen this on other audiophile channels, and it is mind-blowing to me that the creators of high-end audiophile videos with such poor quality spoken word audio can get away with this. 3. I don’t know much about Rockport and have never listened to their speakers, but I suspect they contract out the painting of their units (especially the ones with custom paint jobs) to a autobody paint shop or some other custom paint shop. Like most skilled labor these days, there is a shortage of workers, as workers are moving around to higher paying jobs leaving much of the work being done by newer and inexperienced workers. This is what happens when the US government give away trillions of dollars to people who mostly don't even need it. Again, this is no excuse, but maybe an explanation. It's too bad about what happened here, because this is more than likely going to be a severe (or fatal) blow to Rockport. 4. In the old days, one could purchase high-end audio equipment at about 20% off MSRP. Since dealers only pay 60% of the MSRP price when they buy the stuff from the manufacturer or distributor, that still left them with a lot of profit. But these days since the pandemic and supply chain issues, everything (including cars) is MSRP and audio dealers are making huge profits (in this case $32K profit on $80K speakers). Where is the quality control of 3Ma Audio (the local dealer who sold the Rockport’s)? Shouldn’t they have inspected the speakers before delivering them (or at time of delivery and unpacking)? Given their profit of $32K on a pair of speakers, I think some of the blame goes on 3Ma Audio for not catching the paint problem. Even if Joseph did get some discount, 3Ma Audio is still making a very large profit and should have their own quality control process in place to catch stuff like this.

@mark What's funny is that you complain about watching videos over a couple minutes and use Andrew Robinson as a benchmark, but took a long time to write a super long comment that you expect everyone to take a long time to read...lol If you like Andrew Robinson and his advice is good to you, then that's the channel for you. I may question your preference for brevity and primitive information, but nobody is forcing you to watch. The fact that you wrote such a long response and got triggered enough to do so means you likely were motivated by other things though. Nevertheless, if you like shorter videos, there are plenty you can find as well as apps like TikTok that are focused on providing short-form content. FYI...not everybody is using the metrics of "subscribers" for their validation and goals. In fact, many argue that's a huge problem in society now. More people watch the Real Housewives of Orange County than a documentary on D-DAY or long series like Band of Brothers. They are targeting different audiences and different goals, so I'm glad you have identified that my channel triggers you, and you have better options. Do what makes you happy and not things that trigger you to run to your keyboard to type super long comments that...using your logic...others can do with more brevity . Frankly, it's strange to even want more engagement with me when your claimed motivation from the start is that you wanted less. Do you really want a long comment response to all your questions and comments? It's not really going to make you look good with your "theories" so it may be better use of your time at this point on TikTok or Andrew Robinson.

@@AudiophileJunkie I never said I wanted less content, just more concise. I said that the content you deliver could be delivered more concisely, so that you don't waste people's time and confuse people. The proof of the confusion is that at least 2 people thought you were saying that Magico had the defective paint job. Now if you want to add a lot more substance to your video's (rather than ad-hoc ramblings) like Robinson, then it would take longer and that would be fine. I don't particularly have a preference for Robinson's listening tastes, but he least when he reviews something he methodically compares it to several other products using multiple brands of ancillary equipment, which takes a little longer. But the main point is that he obviously scripts out his videos ahead of time, and doesn't do just a bunch of ad-hoc musings. However, you are not alone in this, as the vast majority of other RU-vid audiophile channels do the same things as you do. I also criticized the fact that you didn't have a mic on Joseph, so you ended up coming close to ruining the reputation of Magico because of that.

@ mark That's fine to articulate what YOU want, but others may disagree. They may be tired of the overproduced and/or primitive substance of others. Like with TV... You can choose from a variety of things... Watch Real Housewives of Orange County or Documentaries. Even among niche like sports, you'll find short form content and long form content. The main difference you forget is that this is free to you AND the people you are benchmarking me to are doing this for their living. I would expect them to focus on metrics and audiences different from me.. Just like TV shows do. It doesn't mean I'm immune to criticism and don't want to hear it, but I can respond to it accordingly based on whether I think the rationale is sound. I think you may be sympathetic to Rockport here and that's totally fine, but I wouldn't use that as your motivation and opportunity to craft other criticisms without thinking it through. Here's a metric I'll share with you that matters to me. I get 97% likes on all my videos on average without hustling a single time in any video for "likes". I also get genuine feedback from people I respect and trust that mean more to me than any other metric.

@@AudiophileJunkie Please stop the libel against me. I am in no way sympathetic to Rockport. Just because I think the dealer who made 40% profit on a $80K speaker should have inspected the units for any cosmetic defects when they unpacked and installed them at Joseph's home , doesn't in any way absolve Rockport for shipping the units with the defects. Comparing the RU-vid videos I watch to Real Housewives of Orange Count is another low blow. I watch a lot of documentaries and science channels, philosophy, real estate, residential construction, travel, and all kinds of other stuff (like the "All-In" Podcast, and no it is not a poker channel). The tighter the production, the more videos I can watch, since there are only so many hours in a day. If you actually need 30 minutes to say something that is fine. If you can say the exact same thing in 15 minutes that is better. Like I said before, it is not an accident that two people (at least) thought that Magico shipped the defective speakers, probably because they couldn't stand to watch the entire video, or maybe because you did not put a mic on Joseph (another thing I complained about) and they didn't understand what was going on. Personally, I think you know enough about audio and are a smart enough person to have a lot more than 13K subscribers. But you just need to do a few things to improve the videos.

@mark ...Lol... "Libel".. You're one of THOSE guys. You keep wanting brevity, YET spend a ton of time yourself writing comments that say the same BS over and over. Imagine if you just invested that time in watching the video to start. I agree that sound quality is not optimal sometimes, but 99% of all content online now is not scripted and heavily produced. For many...The rawness and authenticity is a preferred trade-off to the overly produced, scripted infomercial content. Nobody is forcing you to watch and it's clear that the motivations for all this "constructive criticism" really come from trying to spin blame on others for something that even Rockport admitted was their mistake. The fact that you're desperately trying to spin excuses that not even Rockport said... tells people all they need to know and sabotages all the ancillary criticism you want to pile into the replies. You're not fooling anyone, but you can continue trying... I'm not deleting your comments because all they do is make you look desperate to blame others for a customer AND dealer that paid a ton of money for a product that was delivered by their own admission in inferior quality.
