Cards that were not mentioned but worth talking about: Jeska’s Will Deflecting Swat Mana Geyser Tibalts Trickery Red Elemental Blast Blood Frenzy (pet card admittedly) Flame Blitz & Burn Down the House for planeswalker hate I also really like the new Glittering Stockpile for 3 mana rocks
Great list! I would say deflecting swat Has become a staple for me. It's saved my butt so many times. And for those commanders with power 4 or greater, I love bolt Bend. And How Could You Forget blood moon and Ruby medallion!
Reckless Impulse, Faithless looting, commune with Lava, and Jeska's Will are my goto card draw spells in red. Red doesn't have great permanent card draw, but the impulse draw and looting away dead cards is a very potent way to keep the card velocity going.
As an addition to war room, I would add that Roadside Reliquary can be really good in any mono deck. Comes in untapped, taps for colourless, and can draw you 2 cards on sacrifice. Pretty great! Also Endless Atlas.
Ill be the first to suggest Creative Technique. Pay 5, pick and opponent, he cast a free nonland card from the deck but you get 2 instead of one. I have never missed with this card 👌🏾 i personally like to copy this spell and pick a different and get 4 cards for free from my deck and they only get 1.
for me I kinda have to say Cleansing Wildfire is often an overlooked 'staple' for red. Just having another way in red to deal with scary lands is just good to have. In fact you can use it on yourself to get the fixing you need, Or another player who is behind as a political tool at the table. It also draws you a card on cast so your not losing a card in using it. I will accept to some degree it is very much a pet card of mine, however I do feel to some extent it isn't really looked at as much as it should.
Some of mine are Puppet's Verdict - wipes half of the board without dealing damage. Gamble - Red Tutor... Birgi, God of Storytelling (Harnfel, Horn of Bounty) - Trade bad cards lategame into impulsedraw
I play a Judith deck with Obosh as a companion and I've been impresed with Captain Lannery Storm. she often gets you at least one token to make her virtually cost two, then the next few attacks are just gravy. I have Professional Face-Breaker on my to buy list already, and now I'm also putting the Kiki Fable saga on my list thanks to this video. didn't know the token is like a Captain Lannery on its own too!
For mono-red, Fires of Invention, Shattering Spree, and Magus of the Moon are 3 that you didn't mention that I will always consider. Additionally, after over a year of testing, I would put Tibalt's Trickery at the same level of importance for "mandatory answers" as Chaos Warp for colours that are limited in answering certain things. It gives somebody their value back, and may not always be the answer you need, but it will always stop what you want it to stop (or win with if you've designed the deck that way).
Any cards that loot are usually an auto include (especially if they're instants or also make treasure). I think red has great card draw, you just need to deal with your gy afterwards. Thankfully there's awesome cards like Volcanic Vision that help out, and red is full of similar effects. Reverberate is auto for me, it can target your opponents' spells which is really powerful. Anger of the Gods and Subterranean Tremors are high on my removal list. ST does a vandalblast + hits creatures for the same amount of mana, and can do more if you want, and AotG gets around indestructible. Kinetic Auger is highly under valued. Solid loot on a stick. Purphoros Bronze Blooded, Purphoros' Hammer, and Anger are my favourite red haste enablers. Koth of the Hammer's -2 ability is ridiculously amazing in mono red. Finally, Glimpse of Tomorrow and Light Up the Stage are really growing on me as well.
Soulbright flamekin!! My secret monored tech. Pay 2 generic mana give target creature trample. If this ability has resolved 3 times, add RRRRRRRR. Just color fixes mono red, gives trample to any creature, its just 2 mana!
Some good red budget staples I didnt see were Etali, Primal Storm; Mana Geyser; Thrill of Possibility, Cathartic Reunion; Torbran, Thane of Red Fell; Tormenting Voice; Outpost Siege; Unexpected WIndfall; Light up the Stage; Inferno Titan; Runaway Steam-Kin; Seize the Spoils; Kazuul's Fury; Emberwilde Captain; Court of Ire
Red is all over the place so yeah. Each deck is different. I have 3 mono red decks and they don't share many cards outside of sol ring, Blasphemous act and, basic mountain, lightning bolt
For artifact removal I've started taking out vandalblast and putting in raze the effigy. Vandalblast is great but it's a sorcery and most of the time I didn't find myself overloading it, only using it for spot removal.
Suggestion: Leave out colorless cards that are good in all colors. Stick to things that are explicitly the color that is the focus of the video, has color symbols on it that are of the topic color, or at least do something that is specifically on-color. For example: Good to mention: Fire Diamond, it specifically creates red mana. Probably a good card to mention even though it's colorless. Unnecessary Mention: Solemn Simulacrum. Is mentioned frequently, very well known card. I really appreciate these types of videos. Can't wait for more!
See but like Red doesn't do ramp. This youtuber is giving you a list of cards they would include in their red decks. Sad robot doesn't need to be in black or green as they ramp really well themselves, so it's a good mention. Worn powerstone, I'd agree with 😅
@@TheLimoZine agreed. I do think the title is a bit miss leading. He should use the word template instead of staples even though it's basically his tag line. He does refer to it as that in the video.
3:00 I personally like Vandal Blast and Shattering Spree for artifact removal since it’s a single red t destroy and artifact and has replicate making an additional copy for each red mana you spend after the first, making it much harder to counterspell.
Just recently I put armillary sphere in a mono red deck. Here me out, wayfarers is better in most situations, but the card advantage is huge for mono red which struggles to draw.
For some odd reason, you left off some seriously powerful payoff staples: 1. Blood Moon 2. Magus of the Moon 3. Stranglehold 4. Ruby Medallion 5. Insurrection 6. Ruination 7. Disrupt Decorum 8. Hellkite Tyrant, 9. Treasure Nabber 10. Ancient Copper dragon 11. Ragavan (as your commander of course).
chaos warp + lightning bolt.. aren't auto includes for red decks. imho. Those are two flex slots for removal, I'd much prefer unholy heat to lightning bolt (it's just more flexible after a couple turns), and chaos warp can be so bad sometimes. It's not a plan, it's a 1 for 1 and a semi dead card in your opening hand. The only enchantments you need to remove or lose the game are usually dealt with using Red Elemental Blast / Pyroblast. If you can unattach yourself from a few 'staples' you'll find more room for creativity.
I would also say that Mogg Salvage, Tibalt’s Trickery, and Jeska’s Will are auto includes. Just my two cents. Edit: also Blood Moon and/or Magus of the Moon.
If you struggle with slots for wrath and artifact removal, I suggest [[Fiery Confluence]]. And [[Soul-Guide Lantern]] for any decks without white/black that wanna deal with graveyard synergy.
I use Meltdown and Pyroclasm (along with most of the ones you mentioned.) Meltdown is mostly a one-mana answer for the treasure, clue, food and blood tokens(and the occasional Mana Crypt.)
Pyromancer's Goggles if playing red instants/sorceries. It can copy red instant/sorcery. Hazoret's Monument for Red creature cost reduction and optional rummaging. Dragonmaster Outcast a 1 drop that makes a 5/5 Flying body each of your upkeep for just having 6+ lands. Release the Gremlins which destroys artifacts and churns out 2/2 tokens.
Thrill of possibility/cathartic reunion/etc is for me, but your deck has to have some amount of recursion to really get full value so I agree it’s not an auto-include for everyone
Personally I'm surprised Ancestral Anger is so poorly rated. In EDH it reads 1 mana, draw a card, give a creature +1/+0 and Trample. That's incredible value, especially when most red draw spells make you discard and cost a mana more.
I can't remember the name, but what about that new 5-mana sorcery that destroys all artifacts, then deals damage to every creature equal to how many artifacts entered the graveyard that turn? Seems like a good board wipe for both creatures and artifacts.
i'm glad other people came here first to mention glittering stockpile, it feels like the red equivalent of midnight clock and it think goes in every red deck, and most dual color red decks
I can’t think of a single card I consider to be an “autoinclude” and I have multiple mono red decks without some of these cards. I don’t think edh is the format where you must play anything.
