One tip for people that use obs and want to readjust audio levels after the live stream, you can save up to 6 audio tracks while recording. So you could use 1 for live streaming and save an additonal 5 tracks which you could later adjust / remix. Ecamm seems to be good in one particular use case (also it renders itself quite useless in some others seeing that it only runs on mac). And I think that is why you like it. And I think that if you already have a following (or have enough money to throw at it) it could certainly be worth it. But I don't see it as a program for beginners. So what is the benefit for easy to use if you have to learn an other program first, and (yes I'm quite technical so maybe bit biased) why not stay then with that program that is more powerful in my eyes. Most beginners start with lesser gear, so one of the most important parts is using audio filters (the noise reduction / noise gate / compressor certainly) are amazing to make the sound so much better. But with ecamm you have to use a different program (which makes it difficult to use) for basic filters that you certainly want if you have a bit cheaper gear. Also I think the price is a bit high for a starter, but I can see that if you get a source of income from your video's / streams that it can be worth it if it makes your work easier However I also see that as a barrier for starters, because I think the 192$ is better spend on gear in the beginning, and that will impact the stream /video more than the software. I hope they can improve both (with maybe another tier of pricing for first year or max viewer or something to make it easier to get started with), and the filters should be kindoff straightforward, so I expect that they will include that at some point (otherwise I would be quite dissappointed). Last point, do you have to change the audio delay if you change the framerate? Or does it change with the framerate? Looks like a potential thing that could mess up a stream if someone changes the framerate (I would like to see both frames and ms)
Thanks for the tip about audio in OBS! That's awesome. Ecamm can also do ISO recording for audio tracks, which is super handy. I'm not necessarily aiming this video at beginners, which I think renders the price argument a bit moot. $400 is considerably more expensive than $0, but for for working professionals or even hobbyists with a budget, it's very fair. OBS has always been powerful, and they've really worked to improve it's feature-set and reliability lately, which is awesome to see. For me though, I used OBS for years and part of my workflow included "accounting for OBS." Something would inevitably go wrong, crash, or stop working (especially when using it on a daily basis). Ecamm has never crashed or frozen on me a single time. It's not perfect, but it's incredibly reliable, and part of that is because they only have to develop it for one operating system. Great question about audio delay and framerate- it's usually a good idea to adjust it if you change. going from 30fps to 24fps might not be a huge difference, but going from 24fps to 60fps might create a bigger delay.
Just based on the length of the video, I planned to skim through or jump to various timecodes. But after that fun intro, I didn’t want to miss a moment and watched the whole thing!
When I was retiring all you could do is stream via Facebook or RU-vid so I've never got into them. When people ask (and they do) I just say ECAMM. All I do is an audio podcast so life is so much easier. You do a fantastic job streaming. Good overview maybe you should do a course on ECAMM since your a good teacher!
You can definitely use NDI with OBS. Here's something that OBS has (via a plugin) that is truly mystical. You can set a video *filter* that assigns a virtual cam to any source or scene. That's in addition to the virtual camera that you can assign to the active scene. This means that when you are in Zoom or Skype, you have multiple virtual cameras from OBS available. OK, here's the kicker: you can do the same *with NDI,* which I now use instead of a virtual camera. So when I teach classes via Zoom, I set my Zoom video to a fixed OBS scene (using a dedicated NDI output filter), and use the NDI studio monitor to create a window of the main OBS ouput. When I want to screen share to my class, I share the Studio Monitor window. My students see my OBS output (at 1080p) as a shared screen in Zoom, while my Zoom camera is unchanged.
@@tombuck I actually use OBS with basically the same setup to conduct remote classes on Windows and Linux. Some of the technical work I teach is best done on Linux.
Great video Tom, I started with OBS as well and it’s definitely a powerful application, It was too technical for me to use all the benefits so I made the switch to Ecamm…and I’m in love!
It's so great and it only gets better! They're coming out with a pretty big release soon that adds in all kinds of overlay animations and cool stuff like that.
Tom! I just found this video. It seems that the fix for audio sync issues with Zoom or Teams is to set OBS as the source of video & audio to keep the sync settings! Thanks!

This is a great video. I am getting into streaming and I have a UAD audio interface and software. I watched this video to get info on E-Camm Live and you nailed the question I had. Individual audio tracks for my guest so I can run the tracks through my DAW and use my professional plugins for better audio. I am upgrading my basic setup piece by piece. Hope someday I can have you as a guest on my show once production begins. Thank you and keep grinding on making really great content!
I never used OBS, started directly with Ecamm, it's 100% your fault and... I really thank you for that because it's great 👍 Hope you started the year great
Hey Tom, Great video! This is exactly what I needed 👊 Excellent info and cleared up every issue I had on my plate when trying to figure out which software to use. I was willing to put time into learning OBS, but at the of the day I want turn key ease of use so my brain can focus on what I am trying to present... You had me laughing many times with your puns 😆All the best, Jay
I'm so happy to hear that Jay! Ecamm really is awesome, and the reliability has been fantastic for my workflow. Also, as a relatively new Sony user, I love your name.
Streamyard! Haha I have to be the trouble maker of the batch. I don't use Mac so Ecamm is out for me. However I do like OBS. I don't use it for live streaming but I do for screen recording. It has SO much it can do for a free software. I love your break down of each of these Tom!
Awesome video Tom. Yes - I’ve been debating whether to do live streams or not - this has helped me decide - I have always found your reviews and tutorials a big help - With this you did not disappoint!
Great video and appreciate the time you’ve taken to so thoroughly explain the differences! By any chance, do you know if ECamm supports track matte stinger transitions? I’d actually be more inclined to make the switch if it did. Thanks in advance!
I've never used Track Matte myself, but I know lots of people use transparent video and exported Keynote animations for transitions in Ecamm. If Track Matte works in a similar way, then it should be fine.
Thanks for that break down and comparison. Awesome video 👏🏾 Ecamm is encamped in my mind now. I might OBliterate OBS if I can get a Mac. Another thing that’s great about it being on Mac is that Mac has great desktop switching so you could have ECamm take up an entire desktop and then switch between desktops where you might be doing something else. Your super wide monitor also helps but dual or triple monitors really help when using any of these streaming softwares! Okay I’m done talking now 😅😅
What I miss is a solution usable on iPad. It’s been 4 years since we have USB-C on iPad, but we still struggle to use external cameras and microphones in order to stream, whereas they are powerful enough.
I think the major issue with Ecamm Live is still, that it is limited to Mac, so it would not be the option to pick in a lot of situations, eventhough it looks good. There is one thing that should have been mentioned: OBS has a NDI plugin as well. I have been using it for quite some time and it is totally stable. You can setup OBS as a NDI source or sink and I have been using this in a dual PC setup for streaming using a Linux machine for video encoding and a windows machine for content production. It would also work for video transmission between Ecamm and OBS, if you need both applications in a streaming setup for any reason.
OBS has gotten incredibly powerful, and I love that they keep adding more and more features to it. As mentioned in the video, I think Ecamm being Mac-only is really a strength since developing for a single operating system has allowed them to make it incredibly stable and reliable (much moreso than OBS in my experience- at least on Mac).

Awesome video! How did you record this video while demoing the software at the same time?
Thank for your tutorial, I am about to start my Facebook Live and your are life saver for me. I will try give a try of the 14 days package first. By the way, may I know which camera you are using? it is very clear
This was gold mate. Thanks. About to start....but here in Melbourne...we require 25 or 50 fps :O 😮 hoping ecamm has those options, coz I got bad flickering in my studio at the moment :O
No punny intro can ever stop me to watch the video, it pumps it the right way haha... Yepp, Ecamm all the way here! OBS does offer some good audio tailoring options but then you're very dependent on a powerful (or not) machine. I know I tried to help a colleague at work with configuring for a livestream (albeit quite simple) but nope, the laptop was too weak... Btw, did you record the whole video in.... Ecamm?
I recorded some of it in Ecamm and some in Quicktime (I find that Quicktime really records in high resolution which is great for cropping in super close on UI elements).
Are used to be an ecamm junkie, and I have about 200 hours streaming on ecamm and I switched OBS to try it, and OBS basically obliterates ecamm. It’s way easier to use, it’s got tons of plug-ins that ecamm with its very proprietary Apple-ish ways will never have. The only thing OBS doesn’t do, which is only a matter of time before they fix, is multi stream. But I’ll bet there’s a plug-in that will allow me to do it. Later.
Well, I have recent experience with Ecamm support and it is not very good. After two days of trying and watching countless youtube videos I went to OBS and was up and streaming in a couple of hours (on a windows machine). Still waiting on Ecamm support, not impressed.
Amazing video again cheers Tom! I've got an old Canon 60D right now. And I love the simplicity of using it with Ecamm Live to record straight to my computer. It's just plugged in via USB. However, the max setting is 1080p... and combined with the low'ish bitrate from Ecamm Live, my videos don't come out as crisp (like yours)... esp on larger screens. Would simply upgrading my camera to something that can stream in 4k make a big difference to the quality? Or would it still be better for quality to record onto an SD card first and then transferring to my computer? Got NDIdeas for me on this? ;)
Love your videos! A couple of questions. How can I do a green screen chroma key with out using a green sheet using a green graphic? Also I can’t find where to drop my lower thirds overlays so the show up for me in eCamm live?
That's a good solution Donald! I have a feeling they'll eventually add the capability to add more, but I'm guessing it also takes a lot of power to do it. I've seen how wacky web-based apps like Streamyard can get with a lot of guests, and since Ecamm uses the computer's local power, it might cause a lot of hiccups for people. Just my theory.
The 30 minute limit is usually tied to recording. So as long as you're not recording and the camera has power, it should be fine (you don't need to record in-camera while streaming or recording with Ecamm/OBS).
Haha, not outta the yard at all 😁 The biggest difference is quality and flexibility. Online solutions have fewer customization options and typically are limited to lower quality. OBS and Ecamm (since they use your computer's processing power) have way more options and can stream up to 4K at really high bitrates.
Tom, A question about those who are camera shy, or have a ‘face for radio,’ and disable (turn off) their camera: Q) How to create a Host or Guest Avatar (similar to those which appear in StreamYard or evmux when the camera is disabled / turned off) with a blinking circle to denote the Host/Guest is talking? - Note: One developer suggested putting an image in front of the camera. Well, that was a ridiculous, bordering on the outrageous, solution-to say the least! - Note: It’s already understood a file-name.png could be placed on the screen and ‘transition’ in/out. That, however, is ‘not’ a solution-as it completely negates the StreamYard or evmux -type experience (i.e., how the audience or Guests know who is talking). Any suggestions? yYM
This is a really good question! I don't have a perfect solution since I've never done it, but I've known people who have created something like this. I'd recommend starting with this tutorial video (it's based on OBS): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-53d8yRUvrdQ.html Even if that doesn't totally solve your issue, it might help you figure out which questions to search for next.
Hey Tom, Great video! I got a ton of value from it. QUESTION: I have 2 very large monitors mounted right in front of me (left and right) on my studio desk. Connected to a powerful gaming PC. I have my Mac book pro in the middle sitting on the desk in front. My eCamm is installed on the mac laptop. Do you suggest I record and do livestreams just from my mac laptop screen? Or, can I share all the monitors and migrate (via HDMI) the eCamm Modules off of the mac and onto the big PC monitors and work from there?
Great, light, helpful videos, Tom! Can OBS and/or eCamm Live be used within Skype for Mac? I'm struggling to find a way to do quick and easy multi-webcam switching in Skype for steel guitar lessons I teach, and now also using Loopback to deliver multiple audio sources to my students without using speakers. Really appreciate guidance you can offer.
Tom, I have a question for you. I’ve used ECamm Live for awhile, but I need an external mixer to help mix music. Are there any external mixers that you know of that will work with ECamm Live? If so, which ones? THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help! Larry
I just wanted to see how ecamm looked, hence clicked on the video. No free license for ecamm is the only this that has discouraged me. Not everyone starts to earn within 14 days of their free trial. Also, after years of using OBS, I find that obs plugins are really really powerful, once you actually start using them. I have a raspberry pi hq camera which I use as a webcam but the 6mm lens on it had a fisheye effect on it. I discovered that you can actually “code” your own filters on obs using a plugin, and a basic algorithm solved the fisheye problem. It’s basically a windows vs linux kind of a thing I guess. One is easier to use while the other is just more personalised/customisable.
I’m a huge Ecamm fan, and even before any revenue was being earned, it was worth it for me. But I do need to say that you’re right and OBS has gotten REALLY good with recent updates. Incredibly powerful and super accessible to everyone.
Why do people pay for subscription, it's on cars heated seats, photoshop, ms office, ecamm, and the micro transactions in games, you who pay for these are to blame with how they keep you paying for everything, and owning nothing, no webcam software is worth the amount you'd end up paying them. It'll be in the thousands. I don't mind paying to own it, I'll never subscribe to any apps. These apps need to be boycotted, I suspect your sponsoring ecamm. Besides I'm glad ecamm is not available for pc, as pc is far superior to apple, as apple keeps you locked out, and pc is much more powerful because of this. Those who subscribe to things like these imo is more likely to have a gambling addiction, as I can't see any other reason or logic to how they'd subscribe to anything like this.
Thanks for the kind words! I haven’t used Vmix, but I have several friends who like it. They said there’s a steep learning curve, but after that it’s really powerful. And of course OBS has gotten really good lately!
Hi Tom! I watched the entire episode. I was hoping for some kind of lead in to the use of the ATEM, mini pro/ATEM mini pro ISO with eCam. Based on your experience, can you use the roadcaster pro ii, ATEM mini pro ISO in combination through E Cam? I currently use 3 different camera views and my desktop computer as input into the ATEM. I have an output to a large TV monitor for all of the flow/scenes. ATEM is connected into one of my USB ports for direct recording into my computer. I use my roadcaster for all of the audio sequencing. It is connected to my computer through another USB port. I record the audio as a separate file. I use both recordings and input them into final cut pro. I typically use the switching for posting on social media sources. Occasionally do post editing with the individual recorded files. I hope the comment isn’t overly confusing. The ultimate question is, can I use both devices and direct record/live stream through eCam? I look forward to your feedback… Cheers!
Hey Dave! The short answer is yes you can use the ATEM and RCP with Ecamm. I like to connect them separately like you have yours already and then select the ATEM as my video source and the RCP as my audio source (I usually add a 4 frame delay in Ecamm to keep everything in sync). It works great and I've been using this basic setup for the past 3 years. 👍
I’ve known many people who have gotten the base model Mac Mini specifically for Ecamm. Sounds a bit extreme, but if it’s a big part of your workflow it can make a big difference!
I usually have my GoPro as a USB camera source. For me, the image quality indoors really depends on lighting. If there’s A LOT of light it typically looks pretty decent.
I really appreciate the breakdown and see the value in ecamm, but it is hard to justify paying money for something OBS can do similar for free when there are so many other costs to consider and prioritize like better audio gear, etc.
ive been using ecamn live for church on youtube but the audio suck when playing live music via logic pro. and you having the same issue? ECAMN is good for talk shows but not live and music. the major problem with ECAMN is you cant adjust the bitrate ( VIDEO) and kbps (AUDIO) and that a MAJOR problem as an encorder. please advise
Can we record 4k/30 while streaming 1080/60 on Ecamm Pro or OBS (note: loving the free Streamlab Desktop that eliminates a few of the headaches of OBS with only a small CPU penalty). Really curious to experience the workflow of ECAMM. Would most people be disappointed with the "Standard" version of ECAMM? It was helpful to hear a review of ECAMM in the context of OBS (great idea).
isnt the problem for the payed versions that OBS can actually do what they all can do? i was looking for streamlabs because of multi streaming, tipping situation, merch store etc, seems like everything at one place, that was one reason I consider. but for now, obs it is
Great overview! I just recorded my first live video on ECamm today. 1. It works great but I did notice it seemed a little jumpy in both the recorded version and live version. Do you have your camera set to 30fps? Mine was 24fps and I think that may have been the issue.
I have mine set to 30 because the ATEM seems to like it more, but Ecamm should be fine with anything. I keep my Ecamm settings at 60fps and it handles whatever I throw at it.
@@tombuck Thanks for the info. I like how smooth yours looks...I went through some of your livestreams and you cant even tell it is recorded live. I'll play with the settings tomorrow and try to smooth it out, but thanks for the info!
Hi Tom, great video again! I use OBS to record myself playing the piano with multiple camera-angles. I tried Ecamm, but apparently it is not possible to record multiple audio sources (different inputs of my audio interface) in a way, that they are contained as separate audio tracks in a .mov file. And this in PCM-encoding. This is the way, I do it with OBS. Do you think, this is possible with Ecamm? Greetings from Vienna!
This has been driving me crazy. I’ve been trialing ECamm for a week. Using iPad apps for backing tracks as well as sharing the iPad screen and adding guitar horns and vocals.
I usually use either an Elgato CamLink or ATEM Mini. Some newer cameras can just be connected via USB and then they show up as a source in Ecamm/OBS. 👍
This was cool. Will either one of these applications allow you to control the volume of each guest on the panel? Streamyard seems to leave you at the mercy of the guest.
My biggest issues with OBS have been sources sleeping when not using it/booting back up. I have had three PCs and on every single one I have to go tweak something every. time. I. Stream just to get the video or audio to continue working the way it was when I closed OBS after my last stream/recording. Has anyone expreinced this with OBS and is anyone experiencing this woth Ecamm?
Nice video, thanks. You mentioned being able to record isolated audio tracks will it do isolated video if you lets say have a panel of 2 or more people? Also, I saw someone’s ecamm stream and when they switched between scenes their camera slid in from off screen, Which really looked professional. How do you do that? Thx again.
Ecamm doesn't offer isolated video, but Riverside.fm does. I think that's the best bet if you want audio and video form a guest (plus they don't have to do anything, the files get saved to your account automatically).
It’s tough to say since I don’t know if it’s related to your computer hardware or not. The choppiness is likely due to some setting somewhere in OBS. Ecamm can definitely make it easier to find and set your settings consistently, which I like. But ultimately each app is using the same hardware, so if it’s a computer limitation, then I don’t think Ecamm would fix it.
"If you have a Canon w/ 30min record limit you won't have to worry about that" ...the issue with Canon cameras isn't a record time limit, it's an auto shut-off that cuts off the image to whatever output source you're using, even eCamm. Unless I'm missing something..?
The easiest way to do that would be with an HDMI capture card (something like the Elgato CamLink). You'll be able to select your camera as an audio source since HDMI carries an audio signal.
Recently i got a canon e0s 2000d and obs wasnt detecting even with the utitily meant to find it but i downloaded ecamm plugged the camera it worked but obs stil doesnt work with it im impressed but what would i have to do if i were switch to windows?
Hi Tom, I was wondering - it seems like your exposure in this episode is like 1/3 of a stop too bright, but your OBS screenshare looked right. Is the CamLink or OBS doing something weird here?
Heck yes! I have my MacBook now, which I use for most of my editing since it's portable and a bit more powerful, but the Mini still handles all of my streams/video calls/podcasts, and some editing too.
