Let's talk about 3 important surfboards you need in your quiver as a well rounded surfer.
Over the last few weeks I've received about 15 surfboards to put to the test (for various projects) and yet I only have space for 3 in my board bag to take overseas! Distilling them down has been a big task and I want to share the final results with you today.

For me (and probably a lot of your viewers) - most of the time we surf pretty mediocre waves that require or would be well suited for a true groveler. Be cool to see you do a best groveler of 2023 video similar to the everyday shortboard and twin fins videos you did.

Hi Kale, great topic. Thanks for sharing. For smaller waves up to shoulder high I really like the DHD Phoenix (Epoxy). For chest/shoulder high to a few feet overhead, with average shape, I ride the Pyzel Pyzalien 2 (PU). For high performance waves, really good shape, I've been on the JS Monsta 2020 (PU). It handles better in quality waves, but not as well on flat sections as the Pyzalien 2.

Hi Kale! Its interesting watching you explore the HPSB category here and in your other video. I'm in Southern California. We recently had a good swell that has left me contemplating to replace my everyday fish with an everyday thruster, for similar reasons of wanting to surf with more power (I have a performance shortboard which isn't worth taking out on average days). I don't rip anywhere near your level, nor will I surf high performance waves often, but I'm looking forward to keeping up with you on this journey and taking what I can from watching :)

One way I think about my quiver is how much energy is needed to surf - high energy or lower energy. This is great for me because often I’m knackered from work and life and I just want to be in the water and cruise, but other times I’m up for pushing it more. Lower energy: 6’6 Christenson Osprey Two, 5’10 Haydenshapes Cannon single Higher energy: 5’9 Sharpeye Inferno 72, 5’10 Chilli Shortie Obviously they all have wave conditions that they work best in, and for sure I’ll take out a “lower energy” board when I’m feeling energetic, but it’s really helpful for me to think about boards that’s way because I know I’m going to have a great surf regardless of how I’m doing 🤙🏻

@kalebrock quick question, when it feels too fast to stand up on my drop in, does that I mean that I'm taking off late and not angling? I ride a 7ft fun board but I feel like I have no stability sometimes when taking off, like it is too fast for me to be able to stand up on. Ordered a 6'4 Gremlin from pyzel so hopefully that helps with the stability problem

Great video, Kale. I have a travel quiver question for you regarding an upcoming trip to Indo (Mentawais specifically). My plan is to take my 3DV DHD as my high performance sb, a semi step-up performance sb that’s similar to DHD’s Sweet Spot if the waves get extra big, and a midlength twin similar to your signature board and that triple stringer you show in this video. But now I’m wondering if I should take my daily driver small wave sb (pretty grovely) that I mainly use at my home break instead of the midlength twin if swell happens to drop under waist high while in the Ments. I can only take 3 boards. Thoughts?

Hey Kale. Re your mid length design journey. Check out what Jim Banks and Spider (check Safari Missile board review) are doing with the bottom contours. Basically a double concave / rounded vee with the stringer lower in the water than the rails. I made myself twin keel pin loved the feel. Makes a wider board go rail to rail very smoothly with drive and momentum once on rail.

For surfing the local point break, my smaller wave shortboards are the Sharpeye Inferno 72 and Disco Inferno with FCS2 Pukas or Al Merrick large fins, and the good wave shortboards are a couple different sizes of Sharpeye #77 with FCS2 MF, JS or DHD large fins.
@matthiasbernardo2621
@matthiasbernardo2621 2 месяца назад
Hello Jon, do you chose to ride the #77 at the same height as the I72 or do you go 1-2 inches longer? And about volumes? I have a Sharpeye Cheat Code 5'4 (25,5L) (I'm 5'7 and weight 143-150 pounds) which is my groveller or daily driver but still haven't tested it enough to understands its wave height limit. I was looking to complete my quiver with a board for mid size good waves and one step up. I don't know it the Inferno 72 would have too much lower-end overlap with the Cheat Code. And the #77 seems to have lots of rocker so I don't know if it would ride well in waves that are not at least overhead or very steep.
@JonAtack
@JonAtack 2 месяца назад
@@matthiasbernardo2621The Inferno 72 is a good daily driver for where I am (a point break) but isn't a groveller or for mushburgers; I find it needs 2+ feet and some push in the waves. The #77 is for when you need more control and hold for bigger turns in good quality waves where the Inferno 72 might be a little loose or more for in the pocket -- think Punta Roca / Jeffrey's Bay for the #77. Maybe go a half-inch to one inch longer than an I72. The #77+ is supposed to be a step-up model but I haven't tried it.
@matthiasbernardo2621
@matthiasbernardo2621 2 месяца назад
@@JonAtack thanks a lot, i bought the i72 in 5'8 (25,5L) on a great deal around 300eur almost new, no foot marks no dings no repairs. I'm actually 5'7 1/2 (171cm) so it's about my height. Then i decide if i complete the quiver with #77 or #77+. Let me know your feedback on #77+ if you try it and remember. I believe the #77+ has more volume pulled upfront (chest area) which i guess will be more similar to a pyzel ghost bue with more rocker maybe.
@JonAtack
@JonAtack 2 месяца назад
@@matthiasbernardo2621sounds like a good deal. As soon as you feel the need for more control/hold than the I72 and more raked fins aren't enough, and for doing big carves or power surfing on good waves (like point breaks), I think the #77 is a great board, and it wants/can handle conditions with good size (overhead to double overhead etc). It's a board for the good days, while the I72 is more every day.
@matthiasbernardo2621
@matthiasbernardo2621 2 месяца назад
@@JonAtack thanks a lot for your input. Really helped on the decision as my main concern was the overlaping with the Cheat Code. But i believe both will work best in totally different conditions. Looking forward to have both and explore them in all conditions and playing with fins as well (i have Pyzel M, AM2 M and MF M, just will by reactors as well and i believe i'll cover lots of conditions). Much more than double overhead i don't think i surf so i'll decide later the size od my #77 or #77+, i think 5'9 or even 5'10 should be fine.

Hi Kale, please consider surf selection video for occasional surfers (meaning not living next to the ocean, getting to surf e.g. one to four weeks per year maximum) of beginner/intermediate level (catching clean waves and learning basics of how to navigate within them). Obviously I’m in that category and it’s kinda hard for me to find out good information about what would be the best surfboard (and my first surfboard) to buy. It seems there are two factors playing against each other. Longer mid range might be more suitable for my level but then also the bigger it is, the more complicated and expensive it is with certain airlines. I assume there must be a lot of people in the middle ground but maybe I’m wrong. Anyway, thanks for all the good content!

I always pick the wrong board and fins for the day anyways. Lol I just should stay on my seaside, it rips all conditions. I’ve been screwing around on the mashup trying to like it. Can’t do mids. Got a 6’8, and though the slow measured ride is fun to fine tune, the take offs bore me, it’s like freaking longboarding again. Not my thing.

I live overseas and I got a little caught up in globally branded boards tbh; you tube videos led me to buy a CI Mid, a Tomo Hydronaut (step up) a Slater Scifi 2.0 (everyday) and a Lost Uber Driver (sized down for slightly bigger day)…and I like all of them. But recently, after spending some time surfing at home and chilling at my local surf shop I’ve decided if I ever need to buy a board again (!) I’ll buy from my local shaper. High quality, local & global intel, personalised to me, and about the same price #buylocal

Great vid Kale, would love to see you come to San Diego sometime and you could make a stop by the sharpeye HQ! I surf mushy reef waves. So most days I surf a twinnie red baron fish from JS, or a 7 6 egg funboard if its really bad. Then when the waves turn on I have a performance mid length with a twin+trailer that is super fun for drawn out lines or I have a squash tail thruster I always had a hard time with "everyday shortboards" and felt like it was a weird in between and I'd rather be on something grovely like a twinnie fish and then a squash tail thruster if the waves are actually pumping

I'd like to understand how to size an everyday shortboard. I don't own a thruster for this reason. Mostly terrible waves here in New Jersey (U.S.). Use a groveler/ mini Simmons esque board most of the time. It's funny though, every time I go on to the Album or other websites for alternative boards there is always a comment in the description that says 3-5 more liters/ short + thicker than your everyday shortboard🤷‍♂. I really love twins so it doesn't bother too much, but just wanted to know. I love your content and can't wait to see more of it. Trying my hardest to hit up one of your retreats one day. Then a mid for days when I’m tired 😊. I’ve never rly surfed waves more than 7ft though bc I get scared and where I live breaks don’t hold size too well so anything 6ft and up can often be close outs or slabs or even thickish fast almond barrels which I’m not confident in at all so never been barreled either 😢

My quiver consists of a groveler, daily driver short board, high performance short board, and a good wave short board. My favorite of those to ride is my daily driver Pyzalien 2. A lot of the times I bring out my groveler I start to wish I had my daily driver cause when a good set comes I have trouble making drops on such a flat board despite it being a 5’5”. My high performance has so much rocker that it’s just difficult to get going at times. And the daily driver solves both those problems. So that’s sort of my thinking right now. I rarely get good waves but when I travel I ride a ghost and it’s an amazing and very fun board. I went a little high on liters but it’s ok cause I can get into waves just a little bit quicker.
