I own a Surly Ogre. Absolutely love it! Commuting, bike packing, pulling a trailer, it does it all without any issues. Keep in mind, I am a 300# rider as well. Durable, versatile....you can't go wrong with the Ogre.
@@ottawabikeandtrailnot really, the Ogre has the better dropouts, trailer hitching options and Internal gear hub options. Also old ogre had weight limit of 165 kilos, now the bridge club has a limit of 136 kilos.
I bought a holdover black Bridge Club with the Deore drive train. I’m loving the bike and its versatility, but I changed the 30 tooth front chain ring and installed a 34 tooth. I still have plenty of low gearing for hills, but gained 10 gear inches on the high end. I also installed the 8 pack front rack. Great rack, and like everything Surly makes, it’s built like a tank. I also have a Long Haul Trucker that’s about 10 years old. Both bikes are extremely versatile, and between the 2, I have most riding situations covered.
I just sold my Ogre and just built up a Krampus in First Loser Silver with 1x11 XT, Microshift thumb shifter, Paul’s Klampers, Ritchey cockpit, Brooks Swift saddle, and WTB/DTSwiss wheelset wrapped with Knards. .
As a 70's kid, I was a one bike man; woods paths, gravel, road, jumps, wheelies. As a 60 year old, I'm still a one bike man and, the Surly Bridge Club is the cat's meow, it's cracker jack. I feel like a kid when I'm on it with a hooligan grin at the corner of my mouth. It's the bee's knees.
At 59, I am one year behind you and feel the same about my new Krampus. It’s just a simple and fun bike to ride. I just gave away my Felt carbon 29er and am about to do the same with my Scott CR1 and Specialized Tarmac.
I own a surly ogre and love it. Great all-around bike. I have it set up as a commuter with fenders and panniers. It's a great bike that will last for years
Built my first surly in 2020. Wanted the ogre, but, being the pandemic, settled on the Bridgeclub. It has served me well as a daily all weather commuter carrying 2 loaded panniers.
Ive got the 2023 Ogre from my local Surly supplier here in Oz. Love it. Ive since fitted Sunrise bars and 8pack rack on it plus muckynutz fenders. My commute is a bit of trail riding and road - it also makes a great pub bike.
Thank you for the explanation on these two bicycles. I haven't found my Surly yet but I am in the hunt. This video has helped me understand these two models better.
@@johnysky6066They were pretty similar in function. I think that’s why they discontinued the ECR. I think the biggest difference was that the ECR was built around 3” wheel. The OGRE has a little less tire clearance, 2.5-2.8 inches.
I live in Montana and I have the 2023 ogre after switching from my Kona Sutra that had slippage problems with the dropper post in the frame. I change the seat and change the bars to the salsa factory band deluxe and gloss black, some Ergon grips and 2.25 maxis Race Rekon. next step will be an improvement with the mechanical brakes and that will do it. I intend on riding this on the last great ride in whitefish Montana for 91 miles this summer.
I'm really impressed with their rear dropout and brake mounting (horizontal sliders) surfaces on the Ogre. I haven't used anything like that for brakes, but I presume it's to allow rotor upgrades without the use of adapters? Very cool imho.
I got a second hand Surly Ogre last week! I hadn’t had a bike more than 10years. I cycled perth to Sydney in Aus without any knowledge About 5000 with Ogre absolutely amazing bike. It didn’t make big problem some times small issues but that one was from my ignorance of bike haha btw I’m cycling from Cape to Cairo with same bike this time i got more issues than before because of dirt roads and gravel roads but still my bike’s been amazing! I am truly happy i got this one from second hand market! I recommend ogre!
Was so excited to hear there's a shop in Ottawa with a full range of Surlys in stock. Then I realised it's a different Ottawa. In any case, cheers from Ottawa, ON Canada..
We get that a lot!! We do ship to Canada if you need anything. Unfortunately, shipping bikes is usually too expensive. But we do ship accessories and components to customers in Canada.
I live in the Netherlands Europe and own a Surly ecr which look the same as the Ogre here except it has a dark brown color. Build with a Shimano SLX 30 gear drivetrain and Topeak rear rack and right up touring position, the 3 inch Knards are doing well in dry sand conditions. Not at all at the moment here btw, many places in nature are flooded now. 😂 Surly is a seldom appearance where I live, although people here do a lot of mtb riding. I specifically like the classic looks and the versatility of the bikes. I love to tinker with my bikes. So, I hope that they stick with what they do.
I just visited Amsterdam for a few days. We left yesterday. I didn’t see any Surlys! Glad to hear there are a few out there. Are there any Surly dealers in the Netherlands? We had rain for most of our visit so I didn’t get to ride. Maybe next time.
@@ottawabikeandtrailI hope you enjoyed your stay here and yes this time we had much more rain than normal. MTB routes are in many cases blocked by water in lower terrain. I bought mine in Eindhoven nearby but this shop is closed (personal reasons I think) a few years back. There's an online shop called 'Just Pedal Bikeshop' that I know of. They offer frames, parts and so on. It seems that there is not a lot around, only some shops who know and like Surly, however the parts are there anyway. 😀 I love unusual bikes like this ecr I own.
I bought an Ogre frame set in 2022 and built it up custom. It is an incredibly versatile bike that can be built up so many ways. One thing I would say is that you do need a little more knowledge of bikes to get good results out of the rear end because of the sliding dropout. So while the sliding dropouts give you a huge amount of drivetrain options they do complicate things just a little bit. Totally worth it for me though, this bike is an absolute tank and so fun to ride, pure fun, loads up great for touring or makes a fun rigid MTB. It really does everything and it's always a blast to ride.
I had ride both of it. It's all about where is your planning ride in it. If you'll ride it most of the time in forest which have mostly wild roads, bridge club can be better option. If your paths are less wild compare to fully jungle; like %75 dirt road and %25 wild forest then Ogre can be better. The bikes have very close riding genre so other options can be more important then these slight differences. Like if you have favorite personal tyre size or wanna gear-hub or not. My path was more wild but i selected the Ogre because there is an Rohloff option
Love my bridge club but I’m liking the changes made to the fork. Less is better in this case. Helps with turning radius when attaching bigger bags. Thanks for the comparison
I have a 2020 Surly Ogre in L. SKS fenders, 2 inch tyres and Tubus Logo rack. Rizer MTB bar. Use it as a commuter with Schwalbe Marathon Supreme. Deore/SLX mix. 100-150km a week.
I own a Surly Preamble. I wanted a Cross Check, but I did not find one. I have the straight bar version with a few upgrades. I like gravel and added gravel tires. It's used as a cool commuter bike. Non racing. Lol. I am here to better understand the difference in the bikes.
Enjoyed that, thanx, a Brit riding a gen 1 2007 KM in XL frame size (some call it a Riv-Monkey style wise...) in NE Thailand, 30 miles from the Mighty Mekong river and the Laos border. Subsribed.
Awesome! I had a Surly Ghost Grappler v1 until it got stolen, I really love that bike so now I am in the market to get my next Surly, I am thinking the Ogre and make it a drop bar bike hopefully it would have the same lively feel like the Ghost grappler.
Would love to get an ogre but when I was ready to buy one the LBS didn't have one my size back in 2023...so I got a BC and love the bike...but I'm seriously thinking of getting your conversion kit to go to 2x drivetrain so I can get more gear range for touring. But one thing I'd like all bike companies who make bikes would be to have an option to get the rear triangle split so you could install a gates carbon belt drive to work with an IGH on rear wheel.
I see a Tanglefoot in the background. I came here to say that a Tanglefoot Hardtack is a better choice than the Surlys. Primarily due to thru axles and a much longer front center on the Hardtack.
Good eye! Yes, we are a Tanglefoot dealer and we also love the Hardtack. The bike in the background is a Moonshiner. Videos on our Hardtack builds will be coming soon.
That's for the review of the two bikes. Did you say there's no inner eyelet on the Ogre fork? So a Tubus Duo front rack can now only be installed on the BC, not on the Ogre? Why do you think they did that?
I have both the bridge club and the ogre. The verdict is still out, but my rear wheel on my ogre is little bit canted is there a shim or something I put in there or do you just put it where the wheel is center and then tighten the bolts or not
Center the wheel and tighten the axle bolts. If possible move the axel all the way to the front of the dropout. This should make sure everything is aligned. But, it depends on how the bike was setup.
I hope not. I think Surly dropped the Troll and ECR to consolidate down to the Bridge Club and Ogre in the All-Road touring group. I'd like to think this is a good mix.
kickstand mount on a surly... only took them a hundred years to realize... also you should mention that surly frames have a tendency to break at the 'sophisticated' rear dropout.
thank you so much for this great explanation. I have some questions. first, can i put on Bridge club a Rohloff naaf? second, i am a woman which is160 cm and i see that Bridge has xs and Ogre not . which one you think is better for me ? should i buy a ogre S , or a xs Bridge ? I am going to Mongolie so mountain . Thank you so much .
If you are set on a Rohloff Hub I would go with an Ogre. You can make a BC work, but it will be difficult. Since you are building a wheel I would consider getting the wheels built as 27.5 rather than 29 if you need a smaller bike. This will make the bike easier to handle and better for a smaller ride. Obviously I don’t know your size, but if the small Ogre is close the smaller wheels might give you the right fit.
I have the new Bridge Club with the kickstand mount and I am having issues. m5 screws are too small and M6 screws are too big. Surely it's supposed to be one of those?!
Both bikes will be fine if you get the right size. But, I prefer the smaller 27.5" wheel size of the Bridge Club for shorter riders. If you want the other capabilities of the Ogre you could put a smaller 27.5" wheel on it and have a very similar fit and ride as the Bridge Club.
Someone designed a 3D plug inset into the space on the rear of the BC that allows you to mount the kickstand....would like to see those made so BC owners could just buy one instead of hunting down a 3D printing company to make one from the CAD drawings.
My 2022 Ogre has water color for paint - pure junk. The rear wheel flexes hard on corners. The frame mounts are awesome, bike pedals easy and rolls forever. Will go for "normal people" brand if anything comes out in touring bikes. In mean while will paint frame and fork.
What color was your Ogre? Some of the paint holds up better than others. I’ve never really had a paint problem, but I have seen a few colors that were more prone to scratches.
Жаль эти велосипеды не продаются в России. Но зачем они уменьшили количество бонок на вилке в два раза? На старые вилки можно было повесить гораздо больше багажа.
The biggest bummer to me is that i bought a moss green bridge club 1month before the updated model came on the market.... And the bummer is that i wanted a peg-stand but i couldnt without wrecking the frame , i mean i cant live without a peg stand ,,now i cant plus i could if only i knew and i had waited....
