Which Tank should you play in Final Fantasy XIV (Shadowbringers) 

I started playing this game 2 weeks ago and rolled a gladiator to become a paladin later and i must say as a new player learning to tank the dungeons this game is really amazing. When i played wow i would get alot of heat from random internet nerds for being a new tank. In ff14 i start a new dungeon, say im new and ppl guide me trough it and tell me what to do its amazing,

The GNB and WAR parts felt quite rushed in opposition to the PLD and DRK. It's not really a fair comparison when you focus on your favourites much more ):

Honestly, as a Gnb main, I feel like you've missed the point of a lot of our kit. It's cool that you aren't as big a fan, or that you prefer having more solid and obvious defensive options, but you draw some unfair comparisons (like aurora vs. clemency) when they aren't really meant to fill the same role in the kit. Aurora is more akin to a fast-recharge secondary defensive cooldown / enmity generator for large pulls than it is an emergency heal tool. And the biggest sell to a lot of the gunbreaker's defensive tools is specifically that it doesn't consume their resources to use them -- a Drk has to spend MP for their TBN, and a Paladin spends MP that could be used for offense for Clemency. But a Gnb can Heart of Stone + Aurora a healer through a raidbuster without interrupting their rotation or expending any offensive resources. There are merits to both, and that's why there are generally two tank slots in a raid -- having two overly defensive tanks is a detriment to the group overall. It's not about comparing which tank has the -best- version of X feature -- it's a lot more about how those features work together towards the end goal.

Just started watching your videos and love them been playing ffxiv for over 4 5 years. And I tended to play Pld and white mage just max level my PLD the other day.

I started really playing FFXIV when 3.0 was released for the DRK. But I just can't get into the recent iteration of the job. I have all of the tanks leveled to 80 but WAR is my go to. I can appreciate how simple yet hard-hitting the job is. Hearing the sound of the guaranted Direct Hits with Infuriate and Inner Release as you tear through groups of enemies is SUPER satisfying and the job's self-healing is pretty nice too with Equilibrium and Nascent Flash. Not having to manage DoTs or have to worry about button bloat is a huge thing for me as well. My only complaint is the fact that there is a little bit of down time while waiting for the burst phase cool-down.

in eden verse pld does have uptime oportunity that the other tanks don't have because of requiescat, holy spirit & confiteor, in e5s as the ot that window makes it easier to go fetch orbs compared to the other tanks who at best can use their gap closer to extend the distance they can fetch orbs at, in e6s if you save or time that window into the conflag mechanic, you can keep high dps while soaking fire nado instead of being stuck only using the 1 range attack the other tanks have, in e7s you don't really get too major an advantage other then being able to pull the add faster while keeping uptime tho to arguable results, in my current progress of e8s that window helps a smidge with diamond frost but helps a lot with light rampant where if you get an orb other tanks would loose a lot of uptime depending on the strat while you can just do orb mechanic while still hitting the boss the entire time. Do mind other tanks do have advantages in other area but as a pld 1 trick pony, this is what I see.

GNB is less singe time mitigation, but constant regen / lower mitigations. Throughout a fight, that can mean more dps windows for your healers just cause of how relatively stable their hp will stay whilst other tanks will fluctuate inbetween busters / downtime of CDs. It's definitely less straightforward and takes more gusto from both healer and tank player to play, but when understood fully, offers so much uptime for both utility roles.

Tbn is like the best skill in the whole damn game. I remember having like 3 vuln stacks getting it by a tank buster and it looked like I got hit by the bust as if I didn't had those vuln stack at all

Paladin and Dark knight are my favorite tanks at the moment too.(because of how their abilities look, their weapons, and because of their defensive tools) I think they are the strongest tanks at the moment as well but gunbreaker seems good too and warrior isn't bad either.

For me Gunbreaker is the most fun. Square did a good job fulfilling the Gunblade fantasy and their opening feels amazing

It's so great that all the tanks are in a very good place unlike in the past where PLD was avoided for the most part. Recently I've picked up DRK and having a blast.

Personally, I think tanks’ rotations should be on the simpler side so that the defensive cooldowns can be weaved more easily, since that’s their purpose. That’s why I stick to WAR, which is simple in rotation but complicated in optimization, and PLD, which is just amazing all around.

Tanked in WoW for over a decade plus as a Righteous Paladin. Just started playing the game and yeah i'm playing one here too as a Tank. Fun times ahead with a decade plus of Tanking experience. Making just a little impact on the queue times when i'm on.

I've been away from the game for a few years and am getting back into it now. Mid 60s right now, mainly SMN with some SCH for those queue times. I want to learn to tank but I'm not interested in starting back at LVL 1. Probably just push through until I can get GNB, I love me some Squall and Lightning.

Pretty nice when a class type is so balanced that all options are viable and provide different play styles different ways of getting the job done.

No matter what I get super into, I always fall back to WAR. That being said... I almost have my PLD at 80 (79) and it's been very enjoyable. Might use it as my secondary. I jump around between all of my tanks though. Just whatever I'm feeling.

Out of my raid group in casual situations like extremes or experts as a main healer personaly prefer healing any other tank than paladin. From my experience PLD for some reason takes really a lot dmg from double or triple trash packs. Hallow Ground and Clemency is cool but first have super long cd and 2nd rarely is used.

I recently came back to XIV, i was wondering if you think that an old Main PLD would play well on a Gunbreaker, i'm so used to all the mitigation PLD had, if that's relevant, i was main pld back when we were working on Alexander, i was the MT there, after that i changed to dps on the next expansions so i have no idea how tanks are, and i kinda want to try something new but i don't want to feel like ''oh, this tank do dps but damn, almost no mitigation'' i still want to go to dungeons, do a big pull and survive, any tips on that? or should i just stick to the good old pld?

PLD was my main before Shb but I felt button bloat was getting to me, GNB has the same issue. Loving DRK so far though.

I am use to playing MMO’s on a PC, but have been playing this game on PS5. So controller play with lots of abilities has been a bit rough. I am looking for a good beginner tank, with a simple rotation that I can be effective at as a casual player. All signs point to the Paladin, but DK seems so much more fun, but less forgiving... Nice guide.

i need to say that you have an amazing understanding of the game, i main DK However with current meta. " i hate meta" but, i had to switch to PLD and GNB for 5.4 savages,,for some reason PLD and GNB are two most optimal gay couple for current raid meta.as PLD has on par with DRK mitigation while doing second highest dmg among all tanks, GNB does the highest dmg while can be sharin regen and clemency from PLD for lack of mitigation ..

I wanted to love Dark Knight as it was my main in FFXI. I played Dark Knight type chars since my Everquest days with Shadow Knight. But I’ve found a lot of issue with the Drk in FFXIV. For one they are in a weird place. They don’t have as much mitigation as a PLD nor as much DMG. Also this kinda goes into a whole other area I take umbrage with is the way the game is set up. You don’t get your full kit until max level but even when you do it’s only viable for lvl 80 content and beyond. Or solo content which really isn’t ever a good litmus test. Even so let’s look at some of the abilities. One single target that increases your attack power by a small margin. There is also an AoE version which only does marginally less damage than its single player counterpart. Hardly worth a distinction between the two. You really don’t have many life tapping abilities prior to lvl 80. A warrior arguably has better self sustain. So it begs the question what is the actual class identity of a DRK ? Edgy looking armor and attack animations? The common conception is that DArk Knights have superior magical mitigation. Why is this even a thing ? Because they have the Dark Mind self buff which really isn’t all that great . So GNB have better DPS. War has better self sustain. To me DRK should have been more of the selfish Tank. They should be amongst the top DPS by a decent margin to the other tanks and be able to sustain themselves with more life Tap abilities baked into more of their abilities. They wouldn’t add much to the raid but that’s the whole point. Even the Dark Knight Quests back up this whole selfish warrior identity. Right now just seems like most people “Want” to play DRK for the look and feel” Rather than anything else. Sure there are those that like it because like the paladin it has a pretty easy rotation. The biggest complaints I’ve heard about the gun breaker is that even though it does more damage it has more button press is required so that turns off a number of players who just want an easier time of tanking. But that shouldn’t be the main draw to why people pitch dark Knight over gun breaker or any other tank. The fact their huge weapons ultimately lead them to do less Damage means those colossal great swords are more for show than anything else. Sure all things equal we aren’t seeing a huge gap in the parses but it’s the principle of the thing.

I really...REALLY miss Scourge for DRK

I like all the tanks equally except for Warrior. I pretty much mained WAR in Stormblood and enjoyed it, but for some reason I'm just not digging it anymore.

Which to play? I say all of them.

I'm only levelling my Pally now so this is a non question not an opinion but the Paladin's sustainability seems to naturally be a bit lower than the others no? I know you get the shield and so extra block chance but there's no healing or mitigation in your basic combo at all? Warrior and DRK both have a decent chunk of HP gain in their last hit and GBR has a small heal and a small shield on their second. PLD has neither and yet seems to be favoured for sustain? I realise it's a fairly moot point in group content where your healers keep you topped up but I just found it strange. (I also realise you have clemency but that's an overall DPS loss and even then WAR gets equilibrium). Like I said not an opinion, it's a genuine question, am I missing something or is it more of a big picture thing?

I like how when it came to GNB, he compared Aurora to Clemency, and HoS to TBN, both of which are slightly weaker because they're FREE and do not interrupt GNB at all to use, but then completely skipped over comparisons that are much more in GNB's favor like Camouflage vs Dark Mind. Not to mention ignored the really impressive AoE damage GNB can put out if you just do No Mercy > Demon Slice > Bow Shock > 2x Fated Circle > Demon Slaughter > Fated Circle > Bloodfest > 2x Fated Circle. The bias is strong. DRK is great, so is PLD, but this video almost makes GNB sound like it's just "the tank for people who don't know how good DRK and PLD are yet", which couldn't be further from the case. It creates the wrong impression of GNB, and that just leads to some people disrespecting those who play it because those people think they've gotten partied up with an inferior tank class when they haven't.

We all make very good points for our favorite tank, but those points are rendered invalid when we now have gunblades which are such a dumb weapon they circle right back around to being cool.

So i played this game since it released and loved it, unfortunately had to quit before a real reborn even released. Now fast forward several years later, i find myself in a position where i have the time to pick up an MMO again and really sink my teeth in again. Looking forward to nolifing in this game again. - Get rid of the wife - Find a job that allows alot of free time I win once again after taking massive L's for the past 8 years.... I have a bias against WAR mostly because of things that should belong on DRK, and I will hate Living Shadow so long as it is a "Summon Demi-Bahamut" mechanic, and this is what really turned me away from DRK because once you activate the "Summon Demi-Bahamut" mechanic as soon as the boss becomes un-targetable then you wasted a total of 2400 potency and 50 Blood Gauge, and no amount of TBNs will get that back... you might as well run into Arena Edge-Kun or Death Wall-chan once you waste Living Shadow... PLD however is a good secondary tank to have once you have enough practice with it but really shines(pun intended) in the hands of a skilled player who can save dungeons boss fights from being total wipes(though the same could be said for WAR but with Nascent Flash but WAR needs another DPS alive for that to work which is why I believe DRK should be more Blood DK of FF14 over WAR) unless the boss is doing too much damage for the PLD to keep up with healing through said damage... And now for bias for how fun GNB is for level 70 and beyond... 1 word: Continuation... that's all I need to say how fun GNB truly is... but only at level 70 and beyond... before then is a slog mostly because of no Continuation... and if you sync down to where you do not even have your level 60 combo, you will need to improvise on the fun for single target...

Only reason i prefer war is because of the cone aoe, it's easier for me to position mobs

Why tank as warr: Basically ur an angry hungry beast. You devour the flesh and drink the blood of your enemies while you chop them up to pieces.

You're kinda biased dude. I like your videos but you ignore vast swathes of information on the tanks you don't like or completely misrepresent them. GNB has nothing like Hallowed Ground? Really? Cos it has something pretty similar, a little weaker but 60 seconds off the CD is very valuable. Nothing like TBN? That's fair, TBN is amazing but you said yourself it has downsides of not popping which costs you damage, HoS has none of that. What about WAR? It has the best suite of personal CDs overall in the game, with Vengeance, Rampart, Thrill, RI, NF and Equilibrium while also having the best invuln skill, Holmgang. No matter how good Hallowed Ground is, WAR will almost have it's third use up by the time you have your second. You also skate over downsides of DRK and PLD. PLD has the weakest personal CD set and while it's support CDs are the strongest they are almost all very finicky, the wings need to be aimed and timed flawlessly to have any good effect mid combat and divine veil just doesn't get procced sometimes. DRK has the terrible Living Dead, which has an awful condition on it which makes uses cost raid damage outside having a WHM and even with one you lock down their most valuable solo heal resource. I don't know man, I think if you're gonna make a vid like this, at least provide all the information and not just cherry picked stuff.

Nascent Flash should get the dragon sight treatment and not required a target to work, like I got a macro set up for mine but when soloing old fights and when you aren't in a party it would be nice, also make onslaught free and have 2 charges like all the other fucking tank gap closers it's so fucking dumb

I'm a tank main not a class main and I still feel that paliden is broken just because of clemency. No tank should have a heal thats in par with whm cure 2. In a light party if the dps and healer dies, I can still kill the boss all by myself with the correct rotation. No tank should be able to heal like that. Only dark and gun seem balanced in there own right. Wars crit window is way to long and needs adjustment.

I like how people with great and valid points point out the flaws and biased bullshit in this video with huge amounts of likes but get no reply at all. If you can’t make fair unbiased comparisons stop putting your garbage up. Also at least have the descent to reply to some of the people who have called this out.

I loved DRK in Stormblood but I HATE it in Shadowbringers. It feels so handicapped compared to other Tanks. It's damage is crap, it has no useful amounts of sustain, and TBK is its only saving grace that you get punished for using outside trash pulls and tank busters while not being rewarded for using it properly. I dropped it for PLD and won't go back because PLD is objectively better in almost every situation

The biggest issue that I have with pld is his style His animations from ARR are total trash like Riot Blade ;d His LB is aweful He is not comparable to GNB or DRK in terms of being stylish and being stylish is really important imo x)

Heart of stone is the better version of tbn. hallowed is the 2nd to worst of the tank invulns , after living dead, by having such a long cd. Gnb's kit is the second best in terms of defensive cds. And lastly war became clucky with the new infuriate effect. Some opinions from a tank main since 2.0
