I love my Koh I Noors and I clean them by soaking them in ammonia over night and rinsing them out with water the next day. They get completely clean. I will use Microns on occasion because I like how the ink looks on bristol board.

I enjoyed your information on the rapidgrapgraph pens. I do found your experience with micron, rotring and Copic multilingual very different than mine and others videos I've watched. The rotring fades, smudges and bleeds really easy, making them my least favorite fineliners/technical pens of all time.

Thanks for this review/demonstration! I was excited to learn about the Copic SP option; I've used Rapiographs before (I inherited a set from my Mom, but I find them fussy to keep clean and in working order) and Microns (super easy to use, but the tips change size they inevitably dry up). I just ordered a set of Copic Multiliner SPs today, thanks to your helpful video!

Glad it was useful and hope you enjoy the SPs! Certainly need to make an updated video but these are still my favs for traditional drawing!

Thank you for the informative video. In 2006, I became a Certified Pen and Ink Instructor and found several of my drawings I did with the Rapidograph pens and oil rouging. I had a request for a drawing like the ones I did so long ago. I started a drawing with a Micron pen 01 and 03. Much to my dismay, in the morning, I found that the ink had smudged overnight. I used the Micron because I couldn't find the Rapidograph Universal Ink. I will go back to my Rapidograph pens as they never bleed. After taking the time to create something special and lasting, I will use my Rapidograph Pens!

You reminded me to break out my pens as this was one of my first videos on this channel haha. Suppose it needs an update. How to you feel about dip pens? Nothing beats the sound of slight scratch against Bristol imo! But yes rapide graphs are a favorite.

How does ink smudge in the middle of the night by itself?😵‍💫

I don't own thee Koh-I-Noor, but I own all of the others. I bought the throw away Copics & I really liked them so I bought the ones in the video & I don't use them as much as I do the rotoring tikky graphic's or rotoring isographs. I looked up the Koh-I-Noor just to see how much they were & I don't have 100+ dollars to spend on another set of technical pens. I'm sure they're not much different than the Rotorings. I could be wrong, but for those on a budget. I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. Don't get in the habit of buying 100s of dollars of art supplies if you are just starting. Technical pens are nice, but maybe buy 1 before you spend 200 is all I'm saying.

Yeah I wouldn’t recommend buying the metal nibs if you’re starting off, will make that more clear next time.

I was really curious about Rotring vs. Koh-i-noor. Thank you so much for doing this!

You are not alone. I find Microns shakey too. I'll use a Zig if I'm using a disposable.

Thank you for this. I've been using Copic Multiliners (regular and SP) and Microns for the past two years and the nibs would all "bottom out" after only an hour or two of use due to my heavy handed grip. I'd usually have to go back and use presto pens or white gel pens to even out the lines after the fact. I've always heard of rapidographs but never knew they would prevent this exact problem and keep the same line width over time.

You'll ruin those expensive nibs with a heavy hand.

Nice video Doc. I’ve been happy using the Pilot Precise V5 and V7 rolling ball pens but bought a couple of of Kohl’s-I-Noor Rapidosketch (very similar design as their Rapidograph) pens. My opinion is that they’re very high maintenance and the metal nib is kind of touchy on any paper that’s not smooth finished. It was very different using a metal nib scratching compared to a smooth rolling ball. Still, I sort of enjoyed using them drawing my comics.

I love Pilot! The V5 Hi tech point is my favorite. Will have to try the rapidosketch🤔 Yeah the right paper really makes a difference, especially when it comes to scratching and bleeding. Suppose it’s a matter of getting used to it.

Ultrasonic cleaner makes the Rapidograph a much easier investment. Just toss them into the cleaner for a cycle and like magic they are clean. Sooo much easier than trying to get them clean under a faucet.

I have two copics and they are absolute trouble everytime I do have a heavy hand so my first experience with the .03 I had to reorder a replace,ent and I used such delicate pressure and they still fail every time, the .1 is slightly better but can't do them anymore, to me waste of money, I have an isograph and it's just heavenly the flow of ink and the crisp perfect lines are just chefs kiss haha

Wow! I had such a different experience but can imagine that was a major hassle. I did have to swap one nib in the beginning because it was dry but that was about it. What brand isograph do you use? I've had better luck with Rotring than Koh-I-Noor in the past but haven't used their isographs in so long. The lines are super uniform in a satisfying way when the pen functions/is taken care of! In the long run I'd say that's the most enviro friendly choice.

I found your channel searching for uses of technical pens. Do you think those pens can be used for technical drawing? and which ones do you recommend for technical drawing?
@DrCalyn
@DrCalyn 4 года назад
Yes, they are designed for technical drawing! If you’re starting out I recommend the Microns. The Microns SP are good for intermediate. If you’re at a more advanced level, the Rotring isograph or rapidograph. Hope that helps!
