Wonderful song! In Germany we call this "Ohrwurm" (Earworm)", which describes the phenomenon of not being able to get a song out of your consciousness for hours or days. Greetings.

You should listen to their other songs too. Hector the Hero, Gypsy Laddie, Edinburgh Toon, Rosslyn, Kishorn Commandoes, Calling Doon the Line - all great!

Oh, I'm American, living in the Cape Fear region of North Carolina, so I thought they were saying Cape Fear instead of Cape Clear. Maybe in another version I heard that. One of my favorite shanties!

I believe they're referring to the officers. Here in the Royal Danish Navy, the officers rank insignia is sometimes mockingly called a "pigtail"
