A composition that uses Will Ackerman's F C Eb Ab C Eb tuning, tho here I'm tuned a half step lower - less tension! - and then capo III. Will challenged players to see what they could do with this unusual tuning, and since I'm always looking for new tunings to explore for my Peghead Nation course on Alternate Tunings, I decided to explore it a bit. A fun tuning, and just different enough to inspire some new things.
The name comes from the fact that the piece was inspired by "Will" Ackerman, and a Whippoorwill is a bird that sings! Apparently it sings rather obnoxiously, but oh well :-)
Played on a 2002 Kathy Wingert Model E

Recording gear, etc:
Schoeps CMC6/MK41 mics, along with an AT4050ST stereo mic (not visible) used as a room mic
Audio recorded directly into a Sound Devices Mixpre10, and mixed in Logic
Video recorded with a trio of Panasonic GH-series cameras, edited in Final Cut Pro

So beautiful, honest-sounding music. Thank you! After hearing the word whippoorwill, I've always thought of the J.J. Cale song Magnolia. From now on, this is my new reference point. :)

Great Tune, Doug, but... I'am a Dutchman and don't catch the meaning of the title "Whippoorwill". What does it mean?

Good question! I'll update the description. This was inspired by a "challenge" by Will Ackerman to use one of his tunings, so I wanted to get "Will" in there somewhere. And a whippoorwill is a bird that sings! So...

That’s a beautiful tune. Your playing always has such warmth, I could listen all day and night. How do you capture the sound, what mic/preamp/recording gear is used to get such a great sound. The other day I recited with a Zoom H2n in front of me set to XY and the results sound awful.

I just updated the comments with info on the recording: "Schoeps CMC6/MK41 mics, along with an AT4050ST stereo mic (not visible) used as a room mic Audio recorded directly into a Sound Devices Mixpre10, and mixed in Logic Video recorded with a trio of Panasonic GH-series cameras, edited in Final Cut Pro" The AT4050 was several feet back and just mixed in to give a bit of ambience. The sound is mostly the Schoeps mics. You should be able to get a pretty decent sound with your Zoom, tho. The biggest factor is room acoustics in most cases. I'd try to minimize that by getting the mic/recorder pretty close - like 10 inches or so. Avoid the sound hole, I'd place the recorder above or below the soundhole. Also try different rooms in your house, and even different spots in the room.
