2024 and you're still solving people's problems. This was the exact issue I was having, and nearly the same Whirlpool model. The bearings and heat shrink tubing trick worked perfectly.
My temporary solution was 90 degrees relocation of the original bushing, giving me another 1.5 years and now I'm also doing the 605 solution. Great fun 👍
I work at an apartment complex with over 300 units and each one has a whirlpool dishwasher. This is our most common problem. I'm going to send this video series to my boss and see what he thinks. He's a machine head too, so we're probably going to go with it.
@@cousinace3798 Yep, we just replace the pump. I'll have to rewatch the series to refresh what I'm looking for, I've taken a few apart and don't really see anything. As far as our shop goes, we're due for a new maintenance building in the next year or two, and the boss would like to justify buying a lathe as well as a few other toys, not sure if this will be enough though, lol.

As a retired R&D scientist, I can't say enough about how you systematically did the FMEA (fancy engineering term for Failure Mode & Effect Analysis) and a better way to address the problem. This world is a better place because of people like you who share such valuable "FACT BASED" knowledge for the greater good for which we are very thankful. Well, it goes without saying that I am using your ideas to not only save ($$$) our < 5-year-old Whirlpool dishwasher that has exactly the same heart failure but also do a bit more for the environment by not sending this to the scrap yard
Bro! Thank you SO much for this series of videos! I ordered the bearings you listed, used the heat shrink as you did, put the motor back on and it is currently going through its first wash cycle in a week! $8 for 10 bearings vs $150 for a new pump. You ROCK!

I tried the fix using a 3-d printed version of the bushing. While the motor worked the housing seemed to have developed a leak. So I bought a replacement motor at a whirlpool parts store that was expensive ($150) and that looked similar, but may have had an important difference---it had 3 poles in the stator instead of just 2. One of your early commenters asked why whirlpool used a 2 pole stator instead of a 3 pole one. As has been observed the 2 pole stator creates an oblong wear pattern in the bushing such that many of these pumps fail within 2 years. Presumably the 3 pole version of the pump will create a more circular wear pattern in the bushing and allow the pump to work longer even when the bushing is worn. Whirlpool has been making motors for about 100 years, so it would be interesting to hear their side of the story. It doesn't make sense for a company to put so many underdesigned pumps on the market.
They don't make anything worth a crap anymore! We were going to buy a Maytag due to their 10 year warranty until we found out their warranty is a crock of shit! They won't cover the parts that they know wear out prematurely!

When we are tired of being ripped off by asshole CEOs working on behalf of heartless corporations, we’ll put an end to this thievery that has costs far above and beyond the simple monetary losses; increases pollution, increased energy consumption, increased waste etc. For whatever reason though people are pretty tolerant of being ripped off by the wealthy that steal purely for greed while we are pretty intolerant of theft by the poor that steal out of necessity. Glad to find your reply. I also tried the 3D-printed bushing and developed an inexplicable leak (Causing me $!@&& laminate flooring replacement!!! Caution! Correlation is not causation, but it sure rhymes! I thought possibly it is because the 3D bushings are slightly taller, so the 2 halves might not pull together because it effectively lengthens the rotor shaft. I shaved about 1/32" off one bushing and it still leaked. So now I am wondering what is the part number of the 3-pole motor?

My 15 month old Whirlpool dishwasher circulator pump just failed. I was able to remove the motor/impeller assembly without tearing out the volute with its associated hoses, which I didn't want to have to disturb. I expected to find the impeller plugged up; instead, I found the rotor magnet cracked longitudinally!!! I wish I could attach a photo to show you, but I gotta say, this is THE most unexpected finding. I ordered a whole new pump assembly on Amazon for $80 + tax. I plan to take the new rotor/impeller and stator housing off the new assembly and install it on my washer. I agree, Whirlpool makes crap. Never again! 1529 hours, EDT
I wished I viewed your video before I bought a new dishwasher. Calling for repair & parts is expensive. Watching this video, I am excited to try this repair on the old dishwasher. I did your initial repair suggestion which lasted about 2 years, now I will try this latest modification. I enjoy learning how things work and I got the dishwasher for free, so I'm not too concerned about messing it up. Because everyone uses appliances, which for the most part are not made or designed as well as they used to be, people are seeking out ways to get the most out of these things without having to spend a lot of money to fix them. Your insight is invaluable on how to improve on a manufacturer design inadequacy.
Very informative video, thank you. My Kenmore has given me 9 years of great cleaning and then the circulation pump stopped working. I pulled the pump apart expecting to find worn bushings only to find some hair and lint on one of the blades was preventing the pump from starting up. I was surprised to see no wear in the bushing, the oem parts are not all bad. Back to clean dishes again :)
Motor repair went fine, my pump started to leak as the o-ring was compressed. I ended up buying a Mann HU 7025z oil filter and using the O-ring from it. The filter fits many Mercedes models and is available locally at most parts stores. I forgot to put in the thrust washers, but did score stainless bearings - so we'll see how long the pump lasts on this repair. The dishwasher is cleaning better than ever, one does not realize how many times this pump starts up during a wash cycle till its fixed and you listen to it.
First of all. Thank you. I wish I found your video earlier but I already bought the new pump. My unit has been ok for about 6 years so I thought it would be reasonable to replace the pump. I can refurbish the old one and keep it as a spare.
Mark, I have a KitchenAid dishwasher in my kitchen and a whirlpool dishwasher in the basement used for dirty pots and pans with the turbo cycle. The KitchenAid dishwasher is the one initially that had the problem. So I purchased a new pump for that dishwasher, it runs fine. The whirlpool in the basement I didn’t realize, even though it was working, it was not cleaning the pots and pans as well as it should. So I took the pump out and sure enough the bushings were starting to wear. So I bought the 605 bearings, the heat shrink tubing and the washers. I installed them into the pump and put it back in. The dishwasher then cleaned amazingly better than it did before. Showing that even if the pump is operating the new bearings make it work so much better. Thank you so much for your video it’s invaluable to so many people.
I am here because I have KitchenAid kdfe104dss2 with the same circulation pump. I've been doing the same thing to diagnose and start the motor. Currently I am having my dishwasher running thanks to a second circulation pump because of worn out graphite bearings. I will try your bearing workaround because I cannot possibly order a third pump and not feel like a schmuck. Thank you so much for your work and measurements!
Thanks for a thorough failure mode analysis and solutions to a very useful appliance. I used your idea but while waiting for the parts, I made the bearing out of UHMW (very abrasion-resistant plastic) which is also fairly chemical and heat-resistant. It's been working for a couple of weeks now and seems to do fine. I will update this channel after about 6 months as to how this holds up.
Edit: By accident I bought heat shrink with adhesive, and as mentioned... too thick! So I removed it. Although I'm slightly worried about the small amount of slop... wow what a difference in washer performance!! I think it works better than when I bought it.... All I really used were the bearings, and I had to get some Oetikers as well 38.5mm (1-1.5") to reattach the hose. Thanks for all the work putting this together! It was actually so easy to fix that I just ordered thin wall heat shrink and will be going back in to add that.
Great video, I had the same problem with my Whirlpool dishwasher and sure enough the bushings wore out. I bought the bearings and installed them exactly the way you laid out and it worked great! Save me for having to buy a new motor! Thank you!
Many years ago now the inner bushing wore out on my whirlpool pump. I have a lathe so I found a good plastic rod made by igus for use as a bushing/bearing. I've been selling a small amount of them on ebay. I haven't heard of any wearing down yet. I took one pump apart after 6 months of near daily use and I don't believe there was any wear I could measure. I like to make stuff with the lathe so it at least gives me a good reason to use it and practice my skills :) I started searching around on youtube today because I was trying to understand why my latest ikea branded whirlpool dishwasher will only work with one style of pump when I know both styles of motors work perfectly when connected to direct 120v. I am always messing around trying to understand how things work and I usually have a few dishwashers I'm in the process of repairing. The whirlpool dishwashers that are maybe 5 - 8 years old (rough guess) are not picky about what pump they will run. The latest ikea I have was made in 2019 and I suspect they have tried to make the motor controller too smart. The pump circuit will not power a 120v light bulb... it will turn it on for a fraction of a second repeatedly but it won't leave power on. My older whirlpools will power the bulb just fine.

Hey man, you rock! I went ahead and just made some replacements on my lathe using Delrin, since I had it on hand. I was told that we're getting a new dishwasher if this thing doesn't work by the weekend, so I had to work with what was handy. Works great on day 1, but we'll see how long it lasts.

Wow so I picked up a used whirlpool dishwasher for free that needs fixing. Inlet valve was supposed to be bad but it checks out good, float valve and switch is good, pump motor seems good, stumbled across your video and just incase that turns out to be my problem learned from you how to fix it might give it a go might just trash it lol. Yep same pump, Kenmore 582-1, have 3D printer, willexplore that route, thanks for these videos! We used the machine from 2/2016 motor dies 2/2022 (maybe before, it was intermittent) we do 1-2 loads a day, like to use long programs or good wash, other that this no problem with dishwasher (Kenmore)
I'd probably put some silicon over the shields as well but not sure it would help. Great video, I just installed a new pump and I'm up and running but I may rebuild the old pump and keep as a spare.

It has been a year since the third video. It is time for video four. I would like to see how your fix has held up and if you have come up with any improvements. I did the fix with stainless ball bearings and a stainless thrust ball bearing. I couldn’t wait for the ceramic bearings to come in. My wife needed the dishwasher fixed because of extra cooking before Christmas and she was threatening to call in a repairman! The ceramic bearings have come in now but the dishwasher is working so well and my wife is bragging on my repair I’m not going to replace the bearings until I have to. Someone needs to start making high quality aftermarket appliance parts. I'd love to buy high quality pumps that will last forever for my dishwasher. I'm SOOOOO sick of appliances costing a fortune and being made like junk. I seriously want to buy upgraded parts for all my appliances.
I'm still waiting on my bearings but I'm using M5 stainless washers. They are 5x10x1mm. Seems to be a tighter spec. I believe it's 5.3mm ID.sits on the inner bearing ring nicely.
Had that same problem when I was given the dishwasher which was only about a year old. I resolved it by tightening the impeller back on and just now found it was no longer attached and most of the thread was torn up. I drilled and tapped the impeller, filled with jbweld and shall see how long it lasts this time! If it fails again I'll be 3d printing parts unless I'm able to extract after application of jbweld. I'm happy the bushings/bearings haven't failed yet but, something tells me they will now lol.
For those of us that have access to machine shop equipment... are both "bearings" identical at each end? I'm planning on making a pair from Delrin... it's pretty good bearing material, especially when exposed to water. Are your dimensions accurate enough to make press-fit replacements? I might use a thin stainless (thrust) washer between the rotor and the top bearing. MANY THANKS FOR THESE VIDEOS... strange how RU-vid can take you take a "path unknown" from what was planned to be a side-note video, huh! But hey... whatever works!
It would have taken near zero additional cost for the manufacturer to design this kind of thinking into the original design. You’d think that the payoff would be there in terms of consumer reports and other durability ratings. But apparently not. Anyway, thanks for the great video!
That's exactly what I'm doing today... nice chunk of scrap UHMW and a lathe... hoping his dim's are precise enough for press fit. I have not removed my pump, are both "bearings" identical? I'm considering running a thin stainless (or nylon?) thrust washer for the "top" end to prevent abrasion wear by the rotor... any thoughts? I would thin down the shoulder of the top bushing/bearing to compensate for the washer.
Odd that the bronze failed. I would go to wood - lignum vitae or manzanita or even locust. Water turbines used these and still do for thrust and main bearings. Be fun to test anyway.
In addition to my comment below........I just took my motor/pump apart, and its an improved design almost exactly like Mark's bearing-mod seen in his video here!!!!!! My original motor uses #608RS (C&S) bearings & a stainless thrust washer!!!! but with a few unique seals to keep water from the pump-side bearing. That bearing was the one that failed & rusted from water getting to the sealed bearing. The pump/motor was stamped 2016 & I bought this Kenmore Elite in 2017 , so only getting 5-6yrs is still bad with such a better designed motor/pump (bearings & seals) also has an internal fine-mesh-metalic-micro filter...... I'll update this post with part#s & send info/photos to Mark which might help for a seal design for his upgrade. I can only wonder if this original factory upgraded pump/motor design would work on other models, & they kept this a big f'n secret to make everyone keep replacing the motors with graphite seals!!!!!!
Thank you for the great advice on how to fix the circulation pump issues. I fixed the old pump with your recommended upgrades. The shirk wrap and 605-2RS bearings made it way bette. I Installed it and it ran great. Totally fixed the washing issue but… a leak was found coming from the pump during the first test cycle. It appears to be leaking from where the black plastic is locked into the grey pump body. Is anyone having this problem now? Has anyone had to replace the large o ring or use gasket maker/thread sealer on any of the components? Thanks.

I'm hoping your mod will work on my odd-ball pump W10902589 which is around $200-$300 new for my Kemmore Elite 665.14812N610 that I guess I'm lucky to get 5 yrs out of & always used the 4r cycle everyday. I can't find a cheaper pump. Is my pump that much different???? I also read on forums that the strainer screen tears apart, & jambs the pump. Its been getting loud for 2yrs now. Also tried wacking it with a golf putter.....but nothing.

Cleaned all spray arms, feed lines and filter etc. The problem started when someone loaded a pot full of coffee grounds! Do you or anyone else think the circulation pump could be clogged with coffee grounds? I honestly don't have $$ to replace it. Most posts are just to replace pump, this is the only fix it posts. Hi thank you for making this great video, can i please ask a question to a specific issue. The black fan in this pump is screwed over to the pump unit. For my dishwasher that fan has lost its groves and cannot be screwed to the rest of the circulation pump. Can fix it with instant glue, will it hold for some time. Will appreciate a quick reply, thanks

Get water off a patio, out of a pool out gutter. I think a pump is good to have. How would I know if it works?. Mark, my Kitchenaid has the same motor. Where is the best place to find and purchase the stainless steel with ceramic bearings with those 2 rubber seals? Prices for a replacement motor are about $90 +tax + shipping. Not quite as expensive to try the bearings as a fix. It would be nice to know if your latest "upgrade" will last longer than the two years of a new motor. What are your thoughts? I found Boca Bearings ($14.21 each +$5 shipping and tax) and VXB Bearings ($7.77 each + $5.25 shipping +tax). The way you were talking in the video that bearings aren't expensive, the only ones that were cheaper, that I could find, were the Chrome covered steel, but to me they would rust in no time.

How do you get that shrink tubing on the bearing? Im having such a hard time since the diameter of the bearing is 14mm and the tube diameter is 12mm. I bought exactly what he said...but for the life of me I just can't get that thing on. Very hard to stretch. Anyone have tips on how to do it?
I remember my tubing being basically the same size as the bearing and sliding on easily. Maybe it comes down to variations in tubing based on metric vs imperial measurements or different brands. I just have a box of assorted tubing from my job in the electronics field and cannot be absolutely sure what brands or sizes are in there. Sorry about that. You may have to try a slightly larger diameter if you cannot get it to fit.

I basically ended up stretching the diameter of the tubing out by hand (pulling it in oppo directions) and before it shrunk back to original shape, I quickly slid the bearing in. This worked. But I must report that after following all the steps in this whole strategy, that it didnt work for me because the water ended up leaking profusely. I think it was because I didnt put the black rubber seals/washers back in. Did you or anyone else run into that issue? I know you had said that we didnt need to put it back in. When I tried putting them back in, I couldnt get it to fit because of the ball bearings in place. Wife ended up losing patience with me, so I resorted to just buying a new motor for $50 and putting it in (10 mins). I really wanted to make it work with your method.
@@josephgallagher1646 lesson learned -- just buy the new motor for $50 and be done with it. It'll take 10 mins to install (45 mins on the high end, if you're very slow and methodical). Either way, this is much much much easier.
