Know that part in Battle of the Gods when Beerus blasts Goku into the earth and Goku comes back as a Super Saiyan and that Flow song starts playing? If you pause while they're flying around each other right before they clash, you'll see Beerus' tremendous smile. I think in that moment, Goku gave him something he never had in his eons of boredom, a worthy challenger. And he respects him for that. And then they clash up to space, with Goku hitting him a lot and Goku complains about Beerus using energy blasts against him (first time in the fight, they were hand to hand until then) and blasts him with a giant kamehameha to get him back. Beerus is totally hooked after that. Some nice details I hadn't picked up on my first watch. I was honestly really tentative about DBS, but it has these little awesome moments that keep drawing you in, despite a lot of it being kinda mid.

Beerus isn't like Frieza, he doesn't have "potential" he "had" potential. He was probably picked to be a destroyer because his power is off the absolute fucking charts, he doesn't need to train because he's the strongest he'll ever be. Hence why he's still far stronger than Goku is and ever will be.

I feel like the reason Whis trained Goku and Vegita was because he understood just how under prepared and under powered Universe 7 was compared to the other universes. Before Beerus fought Goku and Goku got divine power the last true danger they fought was Kid Buu who when compared to the other universes is child’s play. And since Beerus and Shin weren’t doing their jobs well Whis knew he had to step in and show them that there was a greater world outside of their universe and that they were just a small part of it. Not to mention if Beerus never arrived on Earth it would have definitely been conquered by Frieza since they wouldn’t have divine help and power.
