Been working on watching all the vids from start to current and this one really got me. That broken glass ceremony literally made me lol. Ready to see whats in store in future videos!
(make sure you pour Rex a dram) I have been trying to decide how to submit my request for a review w/o it being multiple chapters because I have a lot I would like to say. I think the easiest way is to simply provide some cliff notes: -Recent enthusiast -First bottle was Talisker Storm due to having read good things about Talisker and also finding the Storm discounted to $32 -By the 3rd dram I loved it -Tried several since then including Bunna, Glendronach, Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Caol Ila -None struck me like the Storm so bought 2 more bottles of that -Thought Caol Ila would be the next step but after one dram I don’t love it yet -Prefer smokiness of the Storm to peatiness of the Caol Ila -After some research I have narrowed down my next bottle to one of the following mild to medium peated whiskys: Port Charlotte Scottish Barley, Benromach 10, Springbank 10, Kilchoman Machir Bay and Ledaig 10 Could you please do a side-by-side review of two of these if you have them? My favorite type of review is a side-by-side comparison of two similar whiskys and I would love to get your opinion on some of these. I have been binge watching your videos and I want to say thanks for the great content that you are creating for us viewers to enjoy! I am looking forward to much more!
Great episode! I agree Rex, the name 'Powers' sounds budgety, especially if one doesn't realise it's a family name. But I've spent some time in Northern Ireland, and my first job in Austria (the Irish are everywhere) was waiting tables/bartending in an Irish pub, And, it's true that most Irish folk go for Powers over other baseline whiskeys. For me, it just has more going on, more beefy/oily, less thin, probably due to un-chill filtering at 43.2% (Gold Label), and spicier. It's still cheaper here at 20€ than Bushmills and Jameson.
0-100 is a faulty scale, as almost everything falls between 70 and 90. I see this especially with cigars. It's effectively a 20-25 point scale. The problem is that a score of 80 looks great, but it's probably a below-average cigar/whiskey. This is a generality of course, but it seems to be pretty common.
Serge uses it at whiskyfun.com but he does explain that generally a 75 is an average malt/good blend. Admittedly most whisky's fall between 75 and 90 but there are plenty of examples above and waaay below so I find it useful at his site. Also there *should be* very few professionally made and aged whisky's released to the public that are actually awful. That's just bad business.
Sure, it's a at least some sort of scale to help people find something they like, but if 0-50 are *never* used, then all scores are inflated. 50 should be the average score, not 75.
I've found that pretty much all rating systems are a 5 point scale. 10 point scales pretty much only use 6-10. 100 point scales are just 10 point scales x10.
I blame it on the way we grade in public schools. 70 to 79 is a C, which we are told is average, so most of us tend to grade things similarly in our adult lives. But really it could just be the system that movies use. 1 star is basically a don't bother, 2 is a fair effort, but most probably won't like it, 3 is a good one, and 4 is amazing! On that system, mostly 3s makes sense (and it breaks down to a 75% average!) I like 5 point systems myself... with a decimal to help differentiate finer nuances. It makes 3 points or gold stars or smiley poops 💩... Whatever the system... a natural average score. Like a bell curve... 3 is the majority followed by fewer 4s and 2s, followed by even fewer 5s and 1s. But people seem to like an arbitrary 100... Even though we grade by A B C D F with C being average. It's the same bell curve, but skewed up to bigger numbers! Sorry for turning into a rant...
I quietly giggled SO hard at this episode!!! Best description of the last weird 72 hrs! Bonus: Broken glass ceremony is pure gold! Bonus bonus: turns out, only one of you can sing, but it hardly even matters :)
I need some more Irish. I’m heavy on scotch and bourbon. Jameson and Sexton are my only Irish. Powers signature. Looks to be next. Side note. Yep, you guys are about 80% right there with me. There’s only been a few things you liked that I thought were “meh”.
It was called John Powers and Sons in the past. The Three swallows on the label was said to signify that John Powers and Sons were the first to put whiskey in a flask and not just the keg, hence "Three Swallows".
Perfect episode. This is a quintessential Whiskey Vault video. Fantastic, guys. Gratz on the 100k, and here's to 100k more and beyond. This is going to be such a great live stream.... *Cheers*
Absolutely amazing as always, started my collection last month, picked up some Grangestone sherry cask finish last weekend, definitely worth a try. Bulb deep Rex. Bulb deep.
Laphroaig triple wood and cairdeas Madeira. Basically just compare all the Laphroaigs. I just finished my 10 so I need to know which Laphroaig to get next. You’re welcome Rex.
I had an idea after the Bob Dylan episodes, the Caskmates Jameson episode, and after hearing about differently finished scotches. I’m thinking of getting a new barrel, aging tequila in it for a few months, then finishing a whiskey in the tequila barrel. Any suggestions for Phase 2? We (my mom, stepdad, and myself) barrel-mellowed Jim Beam in a barrel, then mellow-finished an Irish Whiskey , then mellow-finished more Beam and all 3 phases were DELICIOUS.
So after a really bad day at work... Could we change the #bulbdeep to mean that we needed to fill our glass past the bulb to get closure? Rex... That was awesome and totally unexpected with the tossing of the glass... Well done
Great episode, great ceremony, and its funny you said if you dont like it we might. When you guys say something is to "sweet" I always know i'll prob like it hahaha.
Had a really bad time with Powers in College, had the whole bottle and a few beers. We all know how it ended. But the taste ever since has thrown me off. How does the Sig. release AB to the budget??
I'm pretty sure, when Rex opened his gaping maw to belt out the Whitney, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.... or maybe he's actually part refrigerator... or maybe I was just seeing the last bits of what he had for lunch
The sherry-finish Powers Signature is really good and significantly different from gold label. I have not been able to find it for over 2 years, but if you can, it is that "budget redbreast" that MBs keep asking for.
Grats on the big 100K!!! Keep up the awesomeness, magnificence and gloriousness!!! On a different note, I just bought a bottle of Teeling singlemalt, I think it's great stuff, however I'm getting a really strange almost garlic like note on the pallet, is this just me being weird? Or are there more MB's getting it......?
Am I in the #bulbdeep crowd? No, not really. Know what I do about it? Just keep scrolling. Works for everything on the internet. I promise it's a happier way to be.
I'm not Daniel but I think I can answer. Even without an age statement: Scotch, Irish, Canadian must at least 3 years old. Bourbon must be at least 2 years old to be labeled straight bourbon, but age must be stated if it's both under 4 years old and labeled straight bourbon. There are no rules for Japanese whisky.
Since starting to watch your channel over a year ago I've gone off the deep end in scotch and bourbon--I have come to love Islay malts, particularly Laphroaig, and have a great enthusiasm for high-rye bourbons. The one nut I haven't cracked yet is Irish whiskey, and I think this is because so far I've only tried out budget bottles like Tullamore DEW and Bushmills Red Label. Do you have any recommendations for a good, more, err, "fully flavored" Irish whiskey in the $30 to $45 range?
I HAVE AN AMAZING IDEA! What if you guys tried to recreate the flavor tones of different whiskeys into food. And try them both and see what experience you get.
Can you guys throw in how to spot fakes or if you are a collector how to spot which might be good investments? I spend some time in the auction houses and I'm sure other people do as well. Love the channels! T.H.
I have Powers as part of my family tree but the person who started Power’s whiskey was John Power, no s. Or I would have insisted on free whiskey, because mooch rules.
There’s a podcast I listen to called “The Podcask”, staring Will H. and The Greeze. They have a unique personal rating scale of BUY-BAR-PASS. BUY - (flavor profile meets or exceeds price point) BAR - (price point may exceed flavor profile) PASS - (flavor isn’t good, price point irrelevant)
You say that a large part of the Irish whisky flavor is the unmalted barley and the pot still. I'm with you on the unmalted barley, but what would they use other than a pot still? Who uses a column still to produce whisky? I just think this is marketing hoo-ha
DO NOT watch this episode with headphones on past 8:49. If you do, please turn down the volume, otherwise you will be subjected to full blast Rex at volume 11 trying to meld the Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston versions of I Will Always Love You into one unholy rendition that will hurt until tomorrow's episode.
I had a question. I was drinking a jim and coke the other night and eating some chicken nuggets and szechuan sauce and it completely made the drink to me pretty much undrinkable. Has anyone had the same experience with certain food and drink combos.
It happens when I eat BBQ flavored toasted hazel nuts and lime Jello while drinking Mellow Corn....I get a creamed corn, lime, toasted nut, BBQ flavor in my mouth. It’s weird
1 star - crime against humanity 2 stars - I'll drink it, but won't buy it 3 stars - meh, but at least it was cheap (or mooched) 4 stars - I'll buy this and share with friends 5 stars - I won't tell you I've bought it and you can't have any
