Yes !!! About damn time !! LOL ! I wasn't really trying to be a ball-buster, but since everything is more expensive here in Ontario (Craigellachie 13 is $80) I like to get some opinions I trust before I buy. So thanks guys. (btw, my name is Joel, if you don't want to read my goofy user name)
I am watching this in December of 2019 and now you guys have well over 100,000 more subs than Ralfy. It's all about your personality and your fantastic content creation that has taken you two to the top! You guys deserve the best!
I bought that malt directly in Dufftown, Scotland! Great explosion of flavours in the mouth... but even more enhanced with a few drops of water. It really makes a great difference. Great mention of Ralfy malt mates!
Ralfy is the man, and so cool you guys gave him this shoutout! I really like the way you guys make us, the viewers, a part of the show, instead of just clicks.. you should end with this: may he who knows know, and may he who mooch mooch, and if either one tries to outdo the other, may he hang on the other mans noose... basically, stay unique 😉
I've only been into the whisk(e)y scene for a month now but I started with Ralfy and then discovered you guys about 2 and a half weeks ago from a recommended video. I love all the recommendations and shout-outs.
I just worked out how much i used to drink in units per week. I'm at 157 units per week and have been for the last 20 years. I have no kidney or liver damage and have done some pretty dumb things including downing a litre of whiskey in under a minute (Which i seriously don't recommend to anyone who wishes to live.) and just had a long sleep and woke feeling as dry as a pharaoh's sock yet one night my brother drank 6 shots in 1 night and was bringing up blood. Even at the age of 10 the same brother gave me a pint of vodka i drank it and felt fine. I am not a big guy, how come i am in good health and that same amount of drinking probably would kill most people, is there such thing as an alcohol gene. Or a resistance built up over years of drinking. I would say drinking fine whiskey has helped me drop my alcohol consumption drastically (cheers) because of actually appreciating subtlety and so much to explore. ( Please to anyone who reads this do not drink like i have you will do your self damage. Or if you already do quality is better than quantity and may help you reduce how much you drink.) In afterthoughts this version of the cheers is for major alcoholics. If you fight, may you fight the urge to pick up a bottle as soon as you wake. If you steal, may you steal some recovery time. If you drink, don't drink as much as me, because i'm bonkers. lol
Hey guys, great channel. Funny that you're tasting Craigellachie today...I was just looking at this the other day, thinking of trying something new. Ended up getting something from Edradour instead. Your notes make it sound pretty interesting, so I'll pick one up next time I'm in my fav store. thanks.
The official UK advice printed on the bottle says do not regularly exceed 3-4 units a day. I would agree with that, any more that 2 or 3 whiskys a day seems a little excessive to me .To be quite frank however since I've discovered your channel I've drank way to much lol In my defence from December to May I didn't have a drink at all (for no reason) so I have to make up for lost time.
Whiskey Vault I just worked it out for a bottle of bulleit borbon 45% it's 700ml and it says it's 31.5 uk units per bottle, that's 22.2ml. That's a miserable pour...... that would probably make Rex cry.
Damm you handsome guys! Because of you two, I had to buy Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses Small Batch... aaaand... the Jameson Caskmates! Happy now?!
BOOM! Numero uno. So I know you guys are seasoned vets, but do you ever find it difficult to taste multiple whiskies in a row, especially with multiple video shootings? Does it make it more challenging to decipher nuances or does it enhance the flavors? Also, do you guys believe in "palate cleansing" at a tasting, and do you have food/drinks you recommend for that purpose?
It absolutely makes it trickier for me. Sometimes back to back tastings don't make much of a difference. Sometimes the previous whiskey makes it really hard to find the nuances in the whiskey you're holding. (assuming there are nuances to find). Sometimes a previous whiskey will uncover flavors that you've never experienced in the whiskey you're holding. Like a Bellechin tasting that uncovered lots of butterscotch in Caol Ila. But after you've spent about 10 minutes with 1 whiskey, the effects of the previous whiskey are a distant memory, so its not that big of a deal. That's one reason (beyond moochyness) why I try to get Daniel to pour the whiskey early in an episode. I like the idea of palate cleansing, but haven't find anything that i feel strongly about.
So I do have to say that was a strange experience. My girlfriend and I watching the video like we usually do. The whole time I am trying to figure out where I can get a hold of the Craigellachie and we hear my name. Lots of laughing and what the fucks being thrown around. After watching youtube and other services for so long I forget these things are interactive hahaha. Cheers guys! Side note i got my hands on some Ardbeg 10 and it was Fantastic! It came with two small bottles of Uigeadail and Corryvreckan. Have not tried the Uigeadail but the corryvrecken was tasty but a bit much.
Whiskey Vault we will have to try the Uidgeadail soon then. The Ardbeg was delicious though I couldn't take more than a sip or two. Looking forward to finding and trying the Craiglachie. Thank you guys for being here and giving us some fun adventures to pursue. ~the girlfriend ~ PS. Love Daniel. Rex is annoying.
I'm a new subscriber and have been watching your old videos. Great vids to unwind to after work, or during work or before work. Just great vids to unwind to.
I believe that Rex needs to tortured a little and allow Daniel to read a few Bad Dad Joke comments. Just seeing the look on Rex's face is priceless and its only fair as Daniel has become the Whiskey Vault Hobbit. What time did the man go to the dentist? Tooth hurt-y.. How do you make holy water? You boil the hell out of it..
You guys now have more subscribers than Ralfy. He's still my favourite whiskey reviewer, but you guys are fast becoming my close second. Sipping a Cragellachie now, it was my first real "challenging" dram and I think my palette is only *just* getting to the point where I can appreciate it. But I wanted to hear what you guys think. What you're describing as an earthy aftertaste, I'm picking up what I can only describe as a hint of sulfur? Thanks for the great reviews!
Ah you guys know ralfy. Cool. I watch his videos too. Great stuff. Yeah he is heavily into it. Great that he talks about hip flasks and other whisky paraphernalia as well. Also does tequila I think.
So .... I know these are some older bits but as far as I'm concerned and know. The worm tub condenser are exactly for the opposite. LESS contact on the copper and faster going from Vapor to Liquid. Vapor has more surface. And in combination with the quite short fermentation, shape of the still and angle of the line arm you clearly want to create something heavier and meaty. Cheers love your reviews.
I like the diversity of whiskeys you're doing. You like the Scotch history. Any chance you can start diving into the special Irish whiskeys? Especially Midleton Very Rare or Barry Crockett.
A combo show with you guys and Ralfy? That would be one of the greatest videos on RU-vid. Somehow add the Dummies in there too and you may just break the internet.
I used to work in the mental health/substance use disorder world, and to go from like the 50th percentile to the 75th, to 90th, to 95th for alcohol consumption is like an exponential curve. Once you hit the 99th, I'm pretty sure you're just chugging beer at a urinal with a constant flow for the rest of your short, liver-torturing life.
My local liquor store just got this in for the first time and they are charging $54 for it would you say that that is a good price because I'm thinking about buying it
I usually get to correct you guys first but I see someone beat me to the punch by reminding you that ralfy now shoots from the Manx bothy and no longer lives in Glasgow. ;)
I always thought a standard drink was like 1.50 oz of 80 proof booze. When you say the top 5-10% heavy drinkers consume 70 drinks, are you talking the 25 ml drinks which you mentioned (which is like 0.8 ounces)? That would be like a 1.75 liter bottle (which I thought was about 40 drinks). I know a guy that goes through about a couple of those a week.
Thank you two for making such amazing videos. I am just starting out on my whiskey journey with Henry McKenna 10 and Buffalo Trace on the bourbon side. My question is how do you recommend building the ability to break down whiskeys into flavors and notes in both taste and smell? The most I can get from McKenna 10 is vanilla and all that comes to mind with Buffalo Trace is a saucepan filled with sawdust and brown sugar on low heat. Odd imagery but that's what I get. I can't get to anything that isn't mentally associated with "warm". Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly.
The fact that you can say "sawdust and brown sugar on low heat" is a definite sign that you're in the right path. Being willing to verbalize the random patterns and memories that your right brain presents to you when smelling and tasting is a big part of it. Drinking and thinking about it is basically the only way forward. Just takes building patterns and historical recognition. It can help if you use a tasting sheet to allow your brain to check itslef against words. Drinking something and thinking "what's in here" is almost impossible until you've been doing it for awhile. Much easier to look at a list, pick a word, and ask your brain "yes or no" questions. I like this sheet: whiskeysmiths.com/whisky-deductive-tasting/
great idea with the live show.. I usually watch your videos after work at around 7 pm CET/CEST (UTC+1/+2) or whenever the fuck I find the time on weekends
Interesting how in less than a year after making this video you have nearly matched and will soon pass the number of subscribers that Ralfy has. While he spent many years creating his large audience you guys have made your way to those numbers in a very short time. As Ralfy is the Beatles of Whiskey channels you two are the Brittney Spears of Whiskey channels. Congratulations!
I'd love to see a video on something from Cleveland Whiskey. i tried it a few years ago and remember enjoying it. Im also curious as to what your thoughts are on their process of fast aging the whiskey, and great vid as always!
They actually brag about force-aging with wood chips under pressure (hours instead of years). Not a straight whiskey. I've tried them a few times and it tastes ok when they pour you a free sample at the store, you're thirsty and tired after work, but it's really not worth the price imho.
A non-whiskey question. Just got done watching all the Daniel music videos and noticed in the credits a Rex person. I was wondering if this could be the same Rex we know and love as a Master Mooch? What made me think it is the same person is the camera angle for the videos was shot from a very high point of view and Rex is always saying how short Daniel, so I thought Rex may have been holding the camera :D
Here is something AMAZING I discovered: Copy whiskys name in the title, go on google, paste it and just add price (your town/country). You'll be amazed what it'll show you once u press that enter!
Oregon has www.oregonliquorsearch.com which will tell you exactly how much it is across the state and even which liquor stores have it (and how many bottles of it)
Hey guys, love y'all but my wallet doesn't, ever since I stumbled across you through modern rogue I've been binging on your videos. I came across y'all about 3 weeks ago and I've already bought 10 bottles of whiskey/Scotch, totaling a little over 400 dollars. Pretty much all good choices and I wouldn't of bought half of them if you guys didn't recommend them. My last purchase was Westland single malt and was wondering when you guys will do the peated Westland, I almost bought it but I'm just curious if it's worth it over the unpeated.
The Westland single is freaking awesome, and the peated is right up there with it. I managed to find one bottle in Austin. We'll review it soon! Sorry (not sorry) for the whisky purchases :-)
I've been binge-ing these for days. lot of fun and learning something new every episode Gentlemen, when will we see the best glasses episode i feel like i was promised back in episode five or eleven or fifteen ?
I could be wrong but I think if you went to Scotland to visit ralfy you’d struggle to find him 😂😂 I believe he lives on the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 (where I live if anyone cares to know 🥴) Currently on a highlands road trip and had my first taste of the craigellachie 13 whilst enjoying a meal in the copper dog restaurant in craigellachie. Thoroughly recommend anybody to experience a good scotch in its home town 😉😉
I got myself craigallachie 13 today. Now it’s in my collection along with👇 Ardbeg 10 Clynelish 14 Cardhu 12 Glenmoraingie Lasanta Glenkinchie 12 Amrut sherry cask Paul John brilliance Monkey should
i just picked up a bottle of high west double rye, and it smells strong of sulfur (rotten eggs.) it is a brand new bottle i just opened and now i dont know if i should try it. there are floaties at the bottom of the bottle also. Ive never had high west but im pretty sure it shouldnt smell like that, and it shouldnt have things floating in the bottle. Have you ever had this happen in whiskey? The smell literally makes me gag.
Rex ya i contacted high west havent recieved a reply yet. The floaties dont look like cork and they sit at the bottom. More like a white, fuzzy looking substance. Sucks that this was my first experience with high west, now im skeptical to try it again.
Hey Daniel, do you have Lark Single Cask in your vault? Really want to try it but seems impossible to get. I was in Hobart last month and couldn't even get it there.
yes I am binge watching, but I have a question.... haven't bought this one yet since the tasting notes have "smoke" in them. Not a peat guy... thoughts?
I'd love to take a trip to Scotland and tour distilleries, but I wouldn't even know where to start. Any tips on a Scotland tour? (I know this is a huge open ended question. I don't have any favorite Scotch preferences to narrow down my interests really. I've mostly had the popular Glens)
You can spend a year doing just this. But if you're doing it for the first time, focus on two things. Distillery and bar experience. For a kickass bar experience, fly in and out of Edinburgh so you can visit places like the Scotch Whisky Society. for your first trip to distilleries head for Speyside. There are more distilleries per square kilometer there than anywhere in the world.
Looking for something different for my own whisky vault. Considering picking up an Irish whiskey (Green Spot or Red Breast) or Ardbeg: Uigeadail. Possibly something both sherried and peated. I like the idea of something rich and peaty. Could you fine gentlemen recommend anything? My own Whisky vault: Oban 14 Glenfarclas 12 Lagavulin 16 Aberlour 12 Glenmorangie 12 Quinta Ruban Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Woodford Reserve Bourbon Past Enjoyed: Glenlivet 15 Writers Tears Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or Jim Beam Signature Craft
Have either of you two tried Chivas Regal 12? I was looking at my local Target's whisk(e)y selection the other day and they had a few bottles for a decent price(I think). I was tempted to pick it up but I hadn't heard of it until then. Or if any of the other commenters have any opinions on it I would like to hear them.
Hey Guys - massive fan since I saw you on Modern Rogue. Never been a massive Whisky drinker (or spirits for that matter), but have been involved in the craft beer scene for a long time (stouts and sours being my preference). Had an unopened bottle of Laphroaig in the cupboard and cracked it open after watching a couple of your vids, and liked it so much I went and got myself a bottle of Lagavulin and Hibiki. Looking to expand my whisky horizons into the Irish, Speyside and Highland scene now. Thinking Green Spot, Dalmore and Glenfarclas given your recommendations. Wondering if you guys are fans of craft beer? Rex, you're a sexy man, but those shirts... damn. Daniel, say whisky for me again... it sounds so f**kn sexy.
You are headed down a beautiful path my friend. I'm not a huge beer fan, but a friend of ours started an amazing brewery in Austin called Jester King. I'm betting you would love it.
Yah I dig craft beer a lot. Had a neighbor who would experiment with brews in his garage all the time. He introduced me to craft beers, and I was a sad mooch when he moved.
I have to be honest. I am a Macallan fan, but was seriously disappointed in the value of the Rare Cask. Personally the 15 is a favorite of mine. Also, I find Edition 1 & 2 are far superior limited releases that are only $100-$120 depending on your location. Rare Cask is nice, but not near worth the price IMO. Really recommend Edition 1!
I'm having this tonight for the first time at my whisky night. I have a club, and this is Whisky Night 68 for us...this will be my 200th whisk(e)y. I was going to try to make it something a bit more special, but why sandbag!? :)
Talking of Glenfarclas 12, did demand for it spike or anything? Its near impossible to find a bottle in Europe nowadays...the 15yr up to the 25yr are still common enough but the 12yr has vanished! :( Also in relation to the time of watching your vids: 19:00 GMT+2
GUYS! Im picking something up from a duty (haha) free shop. What travel market exclusives should I be considering. Rex I'm sure you'd be able to convince those of the whiskey vault to comment on some ralfy videos to get him to connect with you guys. Plan that trip out! "With Whiskey as my God we pray"
Great video again guys (Ep 138-Craigellachie 13), going to have to add this one to my fledgling vault. Can you guys do a review of Leadslingers Bourbon Whiskey? It sounds interesting for a "budget american whiskey".
Ever since we got bottles of Craigellachie 13 in at my liquor store, it's had a special place in my liquor closet. But something I've noticed, is that people have a fairly strong reaction to upon their first tasting. Either it's love-at-first-taste or a very strong getthatthefuckawayfrommerightnow.
Yes and no. Most of them would NOW consider themselves whisky people, but often because I initially set them down the path of drinking straight and more expensive whisky's.
I just got a bottle tonight and I am enjoying my first glass now. I was repulsed by the first sniff, but I enjoy a challenge. This scotch has many redeeming qualities and a whole lot of flavor. I look forward to working through this bottle and exploring it.
Ralfy, the Malty Mr. Rogers. That's hilarious! BTW, since you changed the channel name you need a new profile picture and banner for the page. I think a pic of the vault would be good for the banner. Maybe you can get creative on the picture. I do have a question today. Do you have any examples of single grain scotch in the vault? And can you recommend some? I know it's a thing but honestly can't remember ever seeing one in stores. Seems like they're prob used mostly for blends and not that widely available. I'd like to try one though.
We just updated that a few days ago! It should be showing a vault on your end. If not, might be a browser cookie issue. I do have single grain. Girvan and Port Dundas. Both are tasty but very bright and shiny tasting.
we'll change the profile picture after we give everyone a heads up. by default, the mobile app only shows the profile picture (not the name) in the list of subscriptions. there are lots of mobile users, so we'll tell people before we make that change so they don't miss us in the list.
Aye our guidelines in the UK are silly. a 25 ml dram is one unit and you are allowed 14 per week. I'm Scottish and thus have a Scottish dram at 35 ml, which is 1.4 units, and hence I'm 'allowed' 10 drams a week. Yet the French and Japanese drink and smoke more than us, and they live till their eighties and nineties.
We usually don't finish what we pour in each video. But when we're done shooting all the videos, we sit back for another few hours and work our way through all the leftovers. for science.
Today, re-watching this... (said in the voice of 'Ren':) "you EEEdiots!" Ralfy doesn't live in Scotland. That pretty well proves you don't really watch his videos. He lives on the Isle of Man. No! Really! He lives on the Isle of Man, and his "Bothy" is located at his family's house there. Ralfy doesn't give out the actual location of his Bothy, or his family's house because I told him not to. I told him "don't tell people where you live" and he agrees, it's too dangerous. "Manx Bothy..." where is the land of Manx? It's the Isle of Man, as Ralfy says "somewhere in the middle of the Irish Sea." Yes, the Isle of Man is in the middle of the Irish Sea. Cheers!
