I wrote this song about the 1838 Rendezvous, which was featured in the 1980 movie The Mountain Men starring Charlton Heston and Brian Keith. This rendezvous was unique in that it was originally scheduled to be on the Green River but was changed to the Popo Agee River on the east side of the Continental Divide. The reason for this was change was to stay out of the reach of Hudson Bay Company, as tensions were kinda high with them at the time. Notice of the change in venue was written in charcoal on a storehouse cabin door at the Green River site, where they would find "plenty trade, whiskey, and white women." The white women in question were the wives of missionaries. White women in the Rocky Mountains were an almost unheard of thing at the time; Many trappers hadn't seen a white women in over 5 years.
