Both great ambassadors for nova craft canoes. Best fire side chat yet. Jim is the real deal when it comes to outdoor survival and his personality is so likeable. He’s blessed with a terrific family also. Wait till Wesley gets older and can join him
Thanks Kevin. Jim really is the "real deal." Both of you are such great ambassadors for Canada and appreciating the amazing wilderness we are so fortunate to have.
To each their own paddle. Once I switched to double-blade for solo trips I never looked back. Fast. Efficient. Straight. Well-controlled. Any of us taking chairs, stoves and pounds of tech into the woods have no right criticizing gear choices of fellow paddlers. It's tough not to judge, I know. I try to save my negative energy for the people who have yard sales on portages and talk too damn loud/much on the water.
One of the best fireside chats yet! Thanks for sharing. Jim, I know a guy in the Yukon who snowmobiled from Mayo, Yukon up through the Peel over to Hershel Island and back to Mayo. I think he said it was around 1800km trip.
Thanks, and that sounds like a good trip! I had to sell my ski-doos in Ulukhaktok because it was point A to B. It was a pretty interesting trip to say the least.
Just catching this now. Glad I viewed it as I have been a fan of both Kevin and Jim, Kevin for a few more years obviously. Used you books for Kilarney and other adventures that got me out there. This is an interesting persepective 3 years out as Jim is really starting to gain traction with his varous productions, His canoeing vids are off the charts good now, just watching his solo on the Yukon.......pure gold!
Here are two very amazing people. Thank you Kevin !...and BTW, I grew up very close to where Jim was pointing out. ( Mcarthurs Mills/Combermere - but of course, that doesn't make me anywhere near a Jim Baird. LOL)
I don't watch the "survival/reality" type shows because they seem overdramatized, consequently I had no idea who this tall guy was at Canoecopia. Now I see he is, as Kevin says, the real deal. I'm subscribed to his channel and see him in a new light. Thanks for another great fireside chat. Oh, and I sometimes use a kayak paddle in my canoe. Not afraid to say it.
I have been using a double-blade for YEARS! When you are alone and fighting wind... it is the ONLY way to go. But it is not a purchased double-blade. It is two regular canoe paddles clamped together near their grips with about a foot or so of the neck of each one lying parallel to each other. If you get my meaning. Use U-clamps, hose clamps, ducktape, whatever you want. With two 5 foot paddles you can pretty much make any length from say 9 feet and shorter. Whatever you are comfortable with. I also carry another single paddle with me for when I want to move along slowly and fish. But to GET anywhere, especially on a large lake, the double-blade is essential.
Awesome chat guys! My favorite yet. I found out about Jim from your Canoecopia video, which led me to watch all of the Alone series. He really is the real deal, as are you Kevin. Looking forward to more collaborations, you guys are hilarious together! Cheers
Great fireside chat, not only because of the fabulous guest, but here's one that in front of an actual fire, drinking actual whiskey. I'm not questioning the validity of your whiskey on these chats but some of your guests, I don't know.
Very cool, I love how Jim comes across as a 'dufus' but after watching him in action, that is a guy I would go into the bush with and would follow in an emergency. That last part is critical. Good job on the interview Kevin!
Jim is my favourite with Justin Barbour...them two men are the real deal. They are no joke, not everyone can do what they do!! I started watching Jim then found Justin....above so many others like Ted etc....
Thanks a bundle; two of my favourite trippers. My biggest problem is deciding when reality extends to exaggeration & then moves to fantasy. And who really cares? Take care Brian 78
Great Fireside Chat with Jim... he seems like a real stand up guy.... No winter camping with him after that story...lol well maybe... Hey Kevin... when is it my turn for a fireside chat..... Dennis, AKA... Canoehound
Hi there Kevin, I enjoyed the video very much. I couldn't help but notice the shoes you are wearing I really liked them, can you please tell me the brand of those shoes. Thanks.
They are Keen's Grayson Oxford shoes - very comfortable. www.keenfootwear.com/en-ca/p/M-GRAYSON-OXFORD.html?dwvar_M-GRAYSON-OXFORD_color=1018957&cgid=mens_footwear_shoes
You can tell the cuts in filming by see how far the piece of wood in the fire is burnt down. Obviously not in one take. Probably too much whiskey too soon! :p
So I made this comment last night, and think Kevin pulled it because of the content. Said sorry, eh, but am going to follow Jim now instead of Kevin. Now, after watching that Jim would consider a double paddle...just can't.
Jim you get all that social media intention if you fokus om doing more fun with duck All woman want that Think about that Look in to Matthew posa canal
