Stars: Paul Lukas, Mary Anderson, Helmut Dantine Director: Fyodor Otsep When a nagging wife commits suicide, her husband is threatened with a murder rap by his lawyer, unless he kills a certain female reporter for him!
And 4:11 axles in all the cars which caused lots of NHV from their straight sixes and eights turning 3,100 RPM unless they had overdrive like most Packards and Nashes.
I grew up on these now old movies but now realize how many I missed!! actors and especially actresses did NOT have to rely on how much skin they showed because they had TALENT! talent that is unmatched today. these old films didn't need special effects or computer generated Carl. they relied ONLY on great writers, directing and truely talented actors and actresses. now WE rely on those like Pizza Fix to bring these lost greats back to the masses. thank you seems like such small words in cases like this but it's all I have. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!
@@carolsmith6817 I used to watch porn movies, a conscious decision but I realized that they were ACTING! VERY FEW of the women were actually WET and the moans and groans and YES fuck me harder WERE SCRIPTED!! IF the woman was REALLY into it her pussy would be WET and the man's crank would be very shinny because of her juices!! I think that porno is fine, if that's what it takes to turn someone on but when I choose to watch a newer movie on any medium, RU-vid, Netflix or whatever. I want to see a REAL PLOT. Not something bordering on fantasy and bullshit. Like 5 guys with automatic weapons trying their best to shoot the shit out of the 'hero' but only the 'hero' can hit his mark and has to fall back on cussing and sex to keep the audience watching!! Carol you have your opinions and I have mine and I damn sure don't want to get into a pissing contest with you! Stay safe!
Utterly utterly enthralling. What a great movie. This movie from 1947 is way ahead of its time on so many levels. If you (are) hear, ........................... Great Post.thank you.
Eagle Lyon Films! My two spirit animals. I use to think these movies were boring. Youth is wasted on the young. Thank you so much for posting these golden age movies! ♡♡♡
Excellent film. It takes a while to get going, but if you go along for the ride, so to speak (pun intended), you will have spent a profitable 91 minutes watching this. Wonderful performances by the principals (including Helmut Dantine, Paul Lukas, Mary Anderson, John Pratt, and Joy Lafleur) and by all of the character actors and actresses (particularly Mimi D'Estee, George Alexander, and Louis-Philippe Hebert). Well-written and well-directed, too - and the movie shows off Quebec City and its surrounding area to great effect. Thank you very much for sharing this with us!
The two parts you're not supposed to think about is where this fails, but only if you think about them: What kind of conversation could have possibly taken place at the waterfall, and how does someone happily fall in love again, practically the same day the original situation "resolves itself." Such a revelation would have destroyed me for life.
wish those strappy shoes were still around. what a enjoyable relief and pleasure to watch a film without obscenities and curse words. yes. Thank you for sharing.
Alphonso Zorro But many of us don't. Younger people go to movies and have lower expectations I guess and it's what they've grown up so it's not their fault. If boomers bought the tickets Hollywood might clean up their act. A well placed curse word is nothing to get upset about, but it's awful the way bad language is now in the mainstream. Hollywood affects culture and culture affects Hollywood but Hollywood can have a huge impact on how people think and behave. I wish the would clean it up with sex, violence and language.
Another gem from Eagle-Lion ! Though the plot at times got a bit convoluted, I enjoyed this late 40s mystery. Never even heard of it till now.....and I thought I knew of all of Paul Lukas' films ! Thank you very much for uploading for us ! CHEERS !! 🙂
Me watching in India in 2029. Corona is likely to disappear. Islamic republic of Belgium, Islamic republic of Canada, Spain, England are recovered. Non muslims are being stabbed everywhere by the members of peace loving religion
Thank you PFlix for another excellent selection. Speaking of selections, am I the only person who notices when someone avoids taking even a sip of a drink they've accepted. Whenever someone insist that another take a drink, I become suspicious or if they insist that you have more. I guess I've seen to many movies and heard to much about mickies in drinks.
Wow! Unbelievably well written and acted! Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Respect now for Canadian films. Any others like this? Thanks for posting!
@@globalspiritualrevolutionmedia I love the 1950s Old Quebec scenery. It was filmed in Quebec City but is an American film according to IMBD? A great historic film none the less. Perhaps it was a collaborative effort, like, Sue Thomas FBI.
Eagle-Lyon Films! But what a great film, the best! The question is, just how many of these great films are out there that we haven't seen. I, for one, am extremely grateful to you, AND, for the captioning to get the facts straight. Forget any flaws, just gratitude 4 U.
I am an Indian in India and 60 years of age. I'm gonna spend part of the rest of my life exploring just what you have asked. I am hard at it. BTW: Wikipedia is a good guide.
Lovely films here, and some lovely ones of a different genre, on the Chris Johnson channel: Take me to town Donovan's Kid The sky's the limit (The last two are films for both children and adults. Think the first one is too. )
I just noticed your comment and wanted to say that if you watch this channel more, you'll probably continue to see more of the same high quality films....it seems to be a deliberate habit on here.
Paradoxically, the Austrian-born Helmut Dantine (1918 - 1982) who played nasty Nazis or, at least, German soldiers in Hollywood's World War 2 movies was rounded up by the Nazis when Austria was absorbed into The Third Reich in 1938 and interned in a concentration camp. Fortunately, his father who was head of the Austrian railway system managed to get him released and he fled to the USA. In his first three films starting in 1941, he had uncredited roles including appearing in International Squadron starring Ronald Reagan in 1941 and his first credited role was as a German pilot in Mrs Miniver (1942) which was a wild success being the highest grossing film of 1942 and winning six Oscars including Best Picture. It was the best possible introduction for Dantine to Hollywood. He had a more sympathetic role as a desperate refugee in Casablanca, also 1942. Warners signed him to a contract after Mrs Miniver and he began his career playing Nazis in wartime films. His nasty character fought Errol Flynn's wholesome character at least three times - Desperate Journey (1942), Edge Of Darkness (1943) and Northern Pursuit (1943). No prizes for guessing which character won in every film. He did have a sympathetic role as an anti--Nazi underground leader in Hotel Berlin (1945) but he was back to being a Nazi on the run in Escape In The Desert (1945). His good looks ensured he got a lot of fan mail even when playing unsympathetic parts. From the late 1940s, he continued to act in movies and also successfully on stage. During the 1950s, he continued to have fairly small parts in some major motion pictures including War And Peace (1956), Alexander The Great (1956) and The Story Of Mankind (1957). As his acting career wound down, he moved into production. His final film was Tarzan The Ape Man in 1981.
This is one of the finest written and directed movies of all time. There is no way hollywood or broadway could reproduce the actors nor the sets or direction. I would buy this as is on cd. The "quebec concerto" is something I never heard and I don't like piano that much but this is composition is a masterpiece. This film would win academy awards over anything today in all categories. thx pizza.. I'm thinking of subscribing.. bink
This is not a film to fall asleep with. There is so much going on, a great story with very good musical score and editing, actors, actresses and everybody else involved.
This film is great! Someone should definitely produce a modern version. I would love to help produce that project. I immediately fell in love with Mary Anderson. She is the best part of the film. I also love the fact that it was filmed in beautiful Quebec. I'll be looking for a better print, if it is available. And as a musician, I really appreciate the musical element. I have also composed a piano concerto with romantic overtones so I can relate to the musician's aspiration. Thanks so much for posting it!
We are not seeing hundreds of films ever again because of unwatchable, lost or deliberately destroyed prints. No one took film seriously until recently and there still aren't enough archives or money for restoration. Television, even on a fairly large screen is rarely in the correct aspect ratio and - worse - it is a solitary audience for an entertainment meant to be shared by a crowd of others without the distractions of home viewing. It takes the PizzaFlix'es of RU-vid to locate the movies and post them here, creating a brand new audience, solitary yes, but with this small "Reply" space to have a word with one another and say THANK YOU, Mr. Flix!
Talk about being between a rock and a hard place, but deliberately killing someone is so different from not remembering what happened. Another great pick.
TY much! Landed here and so glad I did. Such a well written story; suspenseful plot. The beautiful music. Handsome composer. One of the best I've come across, which only makes me thirsty for more, and wonder if the well is dry.
Paul Lucas: one of the best actors EVER! Born in Austria-Hungary and when he gives his Oscar winning speech in WATCH ON THE RHINE you will get goosebumps and perhaps tears. THE LADY VANISHES and, of course, DODSWORTH, are also memorable. Later he made movies with Elvis and Peter O’Toole. Every movie of his is wonderful. These are just his outstanding one: not to be missed! 🌹
@@sohara.... you’re welcome! I LOVE old movies! Of course, being 75, I’m pretty darn old myself! If you want some other “mus see” old movies let me know!
Yes: do give me some more recommendations, 😊 I have been watching a lot of films, but there seems to be a lot more. * Have also recently loved some adventure films on the Chris Johnson channel, including Donovan's Kid, and Take Me to Town, and The Sky's the Limit.
I love the old movies - as everyone says, good stories. These days the story gets lost amongst so many 'special effects' to play with. I also love the well-fitting clothes all actors wear - no T-shirts/sneakers in sight. NOTE: check the reporter's shoes ! Platforms & Chunky heels !
Pizza flix has the best line-up of oldies but goodies. Best part is that the titles and credits are included. The artists and actors, although now part of the haze of history, are remembered, come to life for an hour or so and given full credit for their memorable work.
This is possibly the best movie I’ve ever seen as far as the deep drama connected with courageous femininity and innocence . How in the world could this young woman ever think she could defend herself from a big man. She’s like the fool in the tarot cards but as Molly May cub reporter for the Herald. Fantastic story and great music.
When I was a kid, I'm 74, I spent nearly a week in Quebec City-great place with great people! Being young I got to tour the entire city on foot! Regarding the movie the Mary Anderson newspaper woman character was in my mind the ideal woman; she was a professional, tough when she had to be but mostly sweet.
Wonderful stuff, even if nobody, especially a crafty lawyer would be silly enough to try to force someone to commit murder in this way. Far too risky, but such doubts fade away in the face of great performances, and such a romance with the passionate ‘Quebec concerto’, an excellent villain and the captivating Mary Anderson. Fabulous.
Helmut Dantine was the German in Mrs Miniver.Paul Lukas won an Oscar for Watch on the Rhine and played the baddie in The lady vanishes.Mary Anderson was in Hitchcock's Lifeboat.
This movie was so much fun to watch....loved both the crime and suspense elements - a bit of tongue in cheek in spots perfectly timed! Oh and Ms. Mary was rocking in those high heel, platform, ankle strap shoes! Love these old movies that are rarely, if ever shown on tv. Thank you PFlix ….glad I found you....
(We are in the habit of reading comments after the film just for that reason. We don't want to ruin it for those that may read before the film so adjusted our comments). No major points to discuss. Excellent flick. Thanks for sharing hard to find old movies.
Now, now! Some people do read through comments before watching the movie, you know! In general, one should never give away an ending, though this IS the place to discuss major points!
Feel Reel Nostalgic Some people post a Spoiler Alert before making comments which is considerate. But all in all, if you truly don't want to know anything it is best to not read comments as I've found out the hard way many times!
Yet another surprisingly good film/story line & acting!!!!! I often wonder why these "B" actors/actresses I've seen in these films never went on to become big stars! Dog-eat-dog industry I guess......and just maybe who got to the old casting couch first! TYTYTYTYTY FOR POSTING THESE GREAT OLD FILMS! LUV 'EM!!!!!🙏💜
Paul Lukas, the gentleman with the mustache, played Pierre Aronnax (Prof. Aronnax) in Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea 7 years later. More of us have probably seen him in that film than any other film he appeared in. He's Hungarian, btw. I couldn't place the accent. I imagine a lot of people are under the impression that he's French.
Really really good. First half, logical thriller, second half psychological. And the original classical music, piano concerto, is really good. And in Quebec - Canada. Well done. Dont miss it. Thanks PizzaFix!
Have you ever noticed how in these old movies they're always throwing their matches and cigarette butts on the floor? At a concert rehearsal, a police station, a restaurant?
I was born in 1947 and considered watching all movies from 1947 but when I looked up a list of movies made that year I found out there were 364! So if I watch one a day for a year (supposing I could find them all!) it’d take a year. I had no idea just how prolific Hollywood is. But then I suppose there would be at least some that aren’t worth watching.
James Motomal Look in Wikipedia under List of American Films of 1957. My little sister was born in 1957. There are some great films from that year. The Bridge on the River Kwai won best picture. I remember going to see that in the theatre with my dad. My favorite was An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant.
Yes, I know it's my second comment about this same film, but it deserves one and many more. It's a stupendous film, the like of which is no available The skill and artistry with which the romance , evil and intrigue are without equal. An absolutely enjoyable treat without a moments respite. Touche'
My opinion is this classic movie isn't a thriller it's a mystery crime movie and the music is classical even though I don't like that kind of music it was perfect for this movie. Thanks again PizzaFlix for this upload. Ed
"... you trusted me, I trusted you, THEN; Now we know a lot more about each other." Wow. I should have seen this flick back in '47 ... but I was born in 1948. I have watched this film a number of times since first posting: Now, I love this film ... Mary Anderson is H O T/this is to say she's a very sensuous actor! The male leads are familiar: Lukas is wonderful, Dantine a surprise love lead! But, Anderson is wonderful ... * * * * *'s for the production, and everyone behind it.
Wasn't Mary Anderson lovely? She was in "Lifeboat" (Hitchcock) and also, in a much more minor role, in a film with Jeanne Crain, that took place on an ocean liner. - I'm not sure if her career had declined. Per Mr. Dantine, he became an international star. Thanks Pizza.
The old movies are so wonderful: great stories not based on sex, nudity, vulgarity of any type, just a great story! Even the B movies are great! Thanks PizzaFix!!!
