I'm an edgelord, so the aesthetic, the lore, the whispers, the implications... it's all so perfectly delicious. Screw Frostmourne, it has nothing on the Ashbringer.
What kinda chills me the most is that Alexandros (The voice inside of the Ashbringer) isn't blaming anything on the son that killed him, it's blaming the corrupted crusade. Every time he mentions his son, it's from a sympathetic point of view. "Balnazzar's Crusade corrupted my son.. Kill them all." I love Blizzard's lore building so much.

@@sarahstrom8927 In the comic Renault is sobbing when he drove the blade into his fathers back. It looks like he is upset because he thought that Darion was favored more by his father. But perhaps.. It was actually regret..
I always thought that some of the whispers are coming from the blade itself which is supposed to be have a part of a naaru that was darkened on Draenor but purified when the paladins tried to destroy what they thought to be a living manifestation of darkness - which at that point was true since darkened naarus turn into void - but it absorbed the light they used to try to destroy it and they pretty much recharged it.

Created a PvP macro for my affliction warlock back in the day that ended with a "Run" command and pulled the last audio clip. Good times in Warsong Gulch seeing someone grab your team's flag and turn to run, pop your cooldowns, and hear "Kill....them....all..." as you jump from the roof.
Alexandros had two sons and one of them killed him with the blade and this betrayal corrupted the Ashbringer ..the faither was raised from the dead and later as a deathknight he reclaimed the blade but stands to reason that his son who murdered him held onto it so the blade had plenty of time to witness what Balnazzar had done to their order. Later his other son killed his father who as a deathknight was under the influence of the Lich King. This other son heard the blade speaking to him and realized the soul of his father is trapped in the blade. So his father obviously had knowledge about the plans of the dreadlord.
It was available throughout classic and TBC, it was removed when Naxx was moved to Northrend. I imagine most of people who have this sword actually got it during TBC since Naxx was hard during vanilla.
I recently found an addon that basically does the same thing, it's called "ArtifactWhispers" and randomly plays sound files for Ashbringer, among other Articaft weapons.
So... is the sword itself talking, or is that Alexandros in the sword talking. Was the sword taken and Alexandros was like "Ah fuck it, guess I'm a sword now. Let me tell you my life story."? Man, Renault is a shit. He stuck his dad in a sword.
I've seen the datamined quest item. Part of me hopes it does make a return with the patch. However I'm not holding my breath we will see it back in the Naxx40 form.
I would recommend reading the Ashbringer Comic, the lore seems to still hold true to current lore. But in any case, here's some of the pages of the lore, as stated by the Paladin Class Hall artifact tome: *Ashbringer, Part One* Few known artifacts or relics are capable of rivaling the Ashbringer's legendary pedigree. Its origins have been traced to the Second War between orcs and humans. There, on the field of battle, the renowned Highlord Alexandros Mograine came into possession of a dark orb. Though Alexandros considered the artifact to be a living embodiment of shadow, he also believed that it might one day be forged into a weapon of righteousness. Alexandros's vision would become a reality, and that weapon would become the Ashbringer. *Ashbringer, Part Two * It is said that deep within the hallowed halls of Ironforge, the Ashbringer was crafted by the dwarf king Magni Bronzebeard, a peerless weaponsmith. For King Magni, it was a dark time; he grieved over the recent loss of his brother Muradin. Legend holds that King Magni infused the full weight of his rage and sorrow into the Ashbringer's forging, resulting in a weapon of untold vengeance and devastation. *Ashbringer, Part Three* So it is written, that when confronted by undead forces, Highlord Alexandros Mograine dispatched them with ease. Basically this guys son stabbed his father with his own sword after being tricked into it which corrupted the blade, it gets cleansed in the starting zone for death knights
Meh the first comment is a huge mess with a bunch of missing info :D Alexandros who was one of the highlords found a dark crystal on an orc warlock. This didnt play out in the game but the plans were revealed so we know that it is supposed to be a part of a Naaru. Naaru's are beings of pure light but if they are severly damaged or drained off their power they turn into a darkened state turning into void beings instead. The orc warlock most probably obtained the part of a darkened Naaru on Draenor - their home planet where they fled from to Azeroth - since we know that some darkened Naaru existed there. The paladins tried to destroy the crystal because they thought it is a living embodiment of darkness - which in that state was true - and when they channeled holy power into it it absorbed it and to sumply put they recharged it with light and turned it back to its original state - becoming a source of holy light again -. Then the crystal later was used to craft a weapon. The hilt is the symbol of Lordaeron because at that time the 7 human kingdoms were united under the name of the Alliance of Lordaeron and one of the kingdoms had the same name and it was considered to be the hearth of the alliance. This alliance included the other alliance races like dwarves and gnomes and high elves. The sword was later used by one of the sons of Alexandros to kill him and the act of that betrayal corrupted the blade. The whole thing was orchrestated by a dreadlord called Balnazzar who is kinda like a demon but actually there is a whole other story to the dreadlords. Alexandros was raised from the dead as a deathknight and was controlled by the Lich King. He later reclaimed the corrupted blade. His other son wanted to free him so he seeked him out but since he was under the influence of the Lich King he had no choice but to kill his father. After that this other son - Darion - took the blade with him and the blade started to speak to him. He realized the soul of his father is trapped in the blade. Darion later also became a deathknight and served the Lich King but at a crucial moment he managed to resist him. He had a conversation - this whole event played out in the game - and he realized that after the betrayal that corrupted it the only way to to purify the blade is the ultimate sacrifice for others so he turned the blade against himself. This selfless act and sacrifice purified the blade and released the soul of his father. The whole event happened at a place where thousands of paladins were buried. This resting place of so many paladins who served the light left a mark on that land so it was considered as a holy ground and this played a part in the whole event because it weakened the Lich King. The selfless act also awoken the spirits of the long dead paladins which turned the tide of the battle there and the paladin order was saved. I think it is worth mentioning that Darion is not dead.
You are probably thinking of the time they reused that line for the death knight starting zone, when you first get your deathcharger in the “shadowlands”

Maybe you should try watching Begerit's version. He has the Russian voice for the Corrupted Ashbringer, that has a deeper voice than the English version. His YT channel is well worth the visit in my opinion.
