Great video and the idea for the ladder is great, much better than the solutions I’d been working up in my head. I’m getting an older Mirror and one of my concerns about the design (being an older model myself) was being able to clamber back in after a capsize. This looks easy enough to use as a swim ladder for intentional dunking as well!
Thank you. I had a Mirror many years ago and I have just bought one for my granddaughters so I need to re-learn the rigging. I have a ladder on my own boat, a Sabre, which is made out of knotted string with the "rungs" made out of string running through plastic tube. Not as flash as yours but does work.
Excellent simple step by step video. I'm looking at buying a Mirror and was looking for a simple video like this regarding the rigging of the boat. Thankyou.
Martin, thank you so much. This is exactly what I had been looking for. I've just bought a Mirror, and while there is a lot of information on rigging available, there is very little to help absolute beginners rig their dinghy for the fist time. Thanks again!
I’m well past pensionable age and have never sailed. I’m about to book Level 1 RYA lessons and have bought the RYA beginners book. My intention is to buy a Mirror after a while, refurb it if necessary and saunter about some local waterways. I’m only beginning to learn the sailing language so think of me rewatching this with my book, stopping to reinforce the terminology at each mention. I echo others’ comments here that videos for absolute beginners are rare on YT. So thank you for this one which is pitched perfectly for the likes of me.
thanks man! you are a life saver. I bought a second had one of these about a year and a half ago when I came in to a little money. I had thought I would get in to sailing right away but only now just getting in to it. couldn't remember a thing the guy showed me! with out this vid I would still be faffing about trying to figure how it all went together.
I agree with Celia May, great video, very clear and easy to understand. Many thanks, I have not found till now a good explanation on how to rig the Mirror. I bought a Mirror in sorry shape eight years ago and have been storing it in various location till we retired. I now have time and a small garage/shop to rebuild her. I knew nothing about the Mirror before I bought her and have enjoyed learning about her. Thank you, again it's wonderfull to find such great help.
I know this is an old video but I have just been given a Mirror as a restoration project. This has not only shown me how to rig it but I can now do an inventory of what I need - thank you.
Well that’s a wonderful help! Just put the mast and sails up for the first time and got very confused about a few things. You have solved my problems! Thank you!
thx for the comments I no longer have the boat but im glad others are interested in the video as when I was learning I could find no instructions like this. so thought I would do one for the lady who bought the boat off me
Excellent Video! I can see i'm going to be viewing this several times over the coming weeks. Great idea about the rope ladder as well. Really well made. Thanks.
Great tutorial. I'm building an 11" pram dinghy and fitting a mirror Gunter rig and couldn't find any rigging information what so ever. This vid is pure gold.
Great video, beautifully maintained boat. Someday, try sailing with the jib shackled onto the bottom of the turnbuckle, so the sail is closer to the deck and the jib sheets inside the side stays. See if you can sail closer to the direction the wind comes from
never mind Whitby, I just bought one and the book, you just saved me a hole lot of trouble, fantastic instructions, just a thought did you put all the new cleats on, if so have you a shopping list.
Joining a local sailing club will let you find many people with a wealth of knowledge about mirrors. Sailing with a rescue boat on hand is much more relaxing.
Bought an 1966 mirror and restoring it. The side shroud area is rather ragged looking will need a metal plate for the attachment like one shown. Did you use Aluminum tubing for the ladder?
I am very interested in your transom step ladder. I made one a few years ago, but with wooden steps. It didn’t work, but you’ve given me the idea to use aluminium. Did you use hollow tubing or solid rods?
There are some nice ideas in this video especially if you are just cruising. I think the mast mount for raising the boom may be against class rules and certainly the jib tack is far too high. The starting position is level with the top of the bow pieces. It would have been nice to have included setting up the spinnaker but that can be for another video! Nice relaxed video!
Maybe do some research in to mirror dinghy before making a statement like that ...that bit doesn't even touch the water...makes you look a bit of a fool
@@martinseagate1115 did I trample your ego based on my statement? One of the reason why I ask is part of my research as you may speak for i don't know that part. Sharing is caring so why not share your knowledge?
@@cid4887 the design of the squared off front came about as the Mirror Dinghy was designed as a "build at home" boat and the squared off front was simpler to build. As was mentioned earlier the bow doesn't actually sit in the water so doesn't affect sailing capability.
The turnbuckle. My forestay is too long to fit one - found out only after buying one. Would people on here consider tying a knot at the top of the forestay to make it shorter?
