In this edition of the MAG podcast Colin talks to Richard Suddaby, branch and political rep for York MAG about the banning of motorcycles from Whitby station.
The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) are calling for an end to discrimination against motorcycles at Whitby railway station. In an open letter to the Chair of DfT OLR Holdings Ltd, the Government body running Northern Rail, MAG’s Chair, Neil Liversidge, has demanded an urgent reversal of policy.
Anger remains high over the recent move to ban motorcycle parking at Whitby station. Northern Rail remain silent beyond template responses to calls for engagement. Continue reading the MAG press release here: mag-uk.org/end...

The car park is owned by Northern Trains, trading as Northern, who are a publicly owned train operating company in England. It is owned by DfT OLR Holdings for the Department for Transport (DfT). Given it's publicly owned, we should contact the local MP (Sir Robert Goodwill is the Conservative MP for Scarborough and Whitby - robert.goodwill.mp@parliament.uk). With an election looming they cannot afford to be seen miffing off the biking community.
It's possible there may have been small minded local influence at a community level involved in this decision. Given Northern are a publicly owned company they are subject to the Freedom of Information act. We can ask them to provide details of any complaints they have received about bikes in the station car park. Some deft FOI requests may give them a wake up call and at the least make life uncomfortable for them dealing with these.

Northern Customer Experience Centre: 0800 200 6060 (if you legitimately want to travel by train from Whitby and park your motorcycle in the station car park, it's hardly a good customer experience being banned from the station car park). It's a free phone number, it wont cost you a penny to ring it.

At the end of the day, it's a privately owned car park and they can set the rules. However, it's blatant discrimination against a section of society, plus it will have a detrimental effect on businesses in Whitby, not least the Whistlestop Cafe who host a very popular bike night on a Thursday, and which attracts tourists who specifically come to look at the bikes.

i can not see the difference between one car or one bike in a space if they pay the same money it is not like you are parking three bikes in one space and paying for one

I am a regular biker to the whistle stop cafe and have been for years so this is an utter joke JUST to ban Bikes especially in these days of low immission transport which bikes are much lower than cars these days, the whistlestop cafe has 2 parking bays outside there cafe marked up as motorcycles only parking and usually there would be 4 bikes in each bay, mon-fri very few bikes use the cafe i presume like me they are working so not many bikes at all during the week, Thursday Bike nights is only on during the summer months and the majority of bikes turn up after 5-6pm as we are all going after work and the car park is emptying of cars at that time, sat-sun are the busy days for bikes but again mainly during the summer better weather days fair weather bikes and all that lol. what is the difference between a bike in a parking bay paying for a ticket and a car in a bay paying for a ticket ! i will deffo be going to any demo held there.

Northern Trains Limited is owned by DfT OLR Holdings Limited (DOHL) who took on the operation of Northern services on 1 March 2020. This is a publicly owned company. Therefore it is entirely reasonable to write to your MP on this issue to ensure this does not become a national problem. Would the MAG like to think about the structure of a letter to be sent to our MP’s? EDIT: Northen Rail will be the operators of the Northumberland Line, a local line being built between Ashington and Newcastle. It will have parking facilities at each station on the line. Will motorcycles be excluded from these stations? EDIT2: DOHL has responsibility for four rail companies, LNER, Northern Trains Limited, TransPennine Trains and SE Trains ('Southeastern'). So this may be a national problem.

MAG have written to the chair of DfT OLR Holdings. We are calling for wider dialogue on the general issue of poor motorcycle parking provision at all stations as well as the specific issue of Whitby. The problem exists at some level nationally, and not just at railway stations. We are dealing with all parking issues under our 'Park It' campaign.

The cars that use the car park are not there using the Northern rail it's just an overflow or for people that cannot walk to far, I think it's for money making because they don't have a way of charging for bikes

A RU-vid channel called "Simply Whitby! TV" has done a video recently on this subject, and at four minutes in to their video is a poster with parking information. Given the poster's contents, I presume it is older than the new "no motorcycles" signs. It states that motorcycles can park only in the designated area and with the appropriate fee paid. The motorcycle area is visible outside the Whistlestop Cafe in the RU-vid video midway between the two and three minute mark, it is approximately the size of a car parking space and it would appear that the cafe have put a sign in it (no idea if this was the case before the ban) largely blocking access. The National Rail website also notes there is a fee for parking at Whitby (not specific to cars), A little digging shows this is paid for at the ticket office (operated by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) or through RingGo. I don't believe Northern have any staff there. So, were bikers not parking in the designated area, not paying the fee due, not using the railway at all, and are now moaning about not being allowed to carry on doing it? The railway, like any business, will want it's parking spaces to be used by it's own customers, this is not unreasonable, and if a fee is payable in the parking area, regardless of who is intended to use it, wanting people to pay the fee due is also not unreasonable. The size of the parking area for motorcycles does seem a little small, relatively speaking, but realistically, at a station with five trains a day, how many bikers actually pull up there, park, and jump on the train? I'd imagine it's pretty close to zero. I am a biker, I want to defend bikers, there is a discussion to be had on motorcycle parking provision in general, absolutely there is, but is this example really a battle worth fighting? At best bikers will probably just be back to parking in the one designated space with the fee paid, maybe there will be a slightly larger area, but you'll probably get more tickets issued for failing to pay or not parking in that area, just to prove a point, so bikers will stay away regardless.

IMO, the screwed-on no-parking signs for motorcycles are not officially approved traffic signs by the Department for Transport and do not comply with the requirements prescribed in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD). For this reason, these srewed-on fantasy symbols are invalid and do not need to be taken seriously.

Whitby car parks are adjacent to the railway station, these are not owned by the NYMR which means they are public. Sue them for discrimination against bikers.

I’m at the opposite end of the country but utterly disgusted by this clear discrimination and we need to make this a national issue for all bikers because if Northern ( the department of transport ) get away with this other bigots will try the same elsewhere.

You have to get other bikers to take part in your demo and get as much coverage as possilbe . I am from Preston but now live in Ireland and am 100% behind you . This type of corp bulling nees to be stopped and now . I would have come over to support you but its the wrong time of year to ride over to you . Put up a petition on line and i will def sign it and i bet 1000s of bikers will support you . 👍👍👍👍GO FOR IT GUYS AND GIRLS > stand up and be counted .

Using Google Maps, it looks like there are about 50 car spaces in the railway station car park, for which Network Rail apparently charge £2.50 per hour or £10 per day (6am to 6pm seven days per week). At a rough guess I would expect that the car park, brings in somewhere between £100-150.000 per year. It may be more. It does not surprise me at all that the directors of have taken action to protect that income. From a commercial viewpoint they would be negligent to act otherwise. The map also shows a large area of municipal parking within a very short walk from the Station (effectively just on the other side of the road).

Councils all over the country are closing and removing free motorcycle parking bays but they aren't preventing bikes parking in car spaces if the charge is paid. That is obviously ridiculous but it means they extract a little bit more from your wallet. I asked the council where I live where the motorcycle parking bays were and they responded by saying there aren't any, just use car spaces and pay, or use the free restricted time car spaces. A few months ago I did park in a free, 30 minute car space with my bike, when I returned I was confroned by an irrate car driver who said 'did you have to take a car space with that thing' er, yes I replied, I have no option, talk to the council who don't provide motorcycle parking area's. Then I added, do you have to drive around in that thing, you might find it easier to park in a more reasonably sized vehicle. It was a massive SUV with what sounded like a large V8 engine, with only him in it. Poor guy obviously needs it to compensate for a lack of something.

Where i live they placed motorcycle parking bays, painted off areas on junctions and tight bends. Domino bike parking in order to give parking priority to cars. They even laid on get your bicycle stolen centres where you can leave your bicycle, which is great if you own the crappiest one.

They were stopping motorcycle parking ages ago by painting yellow hatchings over the big motorcycle parking area that was there. I parked in it just after it was done and was greeted by an angry fella telling me I couldn't park there anymore so I parked in the whistlestop m/c space and went to pick my glasses up. I'll try and find a receipt to give a better date but it was maybe 10 months a go.

has anyone checked google maps ?? i know it updates a bit slow, so there is not a sign showing yet that says no motorcycles , but i did notice the 2 parking spaces nearest the train station in front of the cafe both have signs saying " whistlestop cafe motorcycle parking only " poss good for 8 bikes at a push. anyways, my point is, there is space reserved just for bikes in front of the cafe. so is the ban for the main car park ?? or is it for the whole site and the reserve parking signs have gone ?? 😥😥

All northern had to do was charge bikers for parking, paint some bike bays in a few car spaces, not an outright ban. They are being discriminate. I know what side of the fence I'll fight on.

If this follows the same principle of most rail property, the car park will belong to Network Rail and operated by its inhouse team in terms of revenue, but they frequently sub-out the running and control to local parking control companies. Write to Network Rail, Waterloo General Office, London, SE1 8SW
