White’s Fulton initial review | Worth the price??

This is White’s attempt into a lower cost boot segment (Thorogoods/Duradero/Red Wing), and they are using a leather 360 degree Goodyear welt, leather footbed, and cork filling to justify the $80-$100 dollar difference in price between others in the segment.

I’m going to work these things pretty hard. Initial impressions aren’t great, BUT that’s not everything. For last year I’d say Duradero, Red Wing and Thorogood were my GO TO brands for durability/comfort/performance. With Duradero having the BEST quality control/customer service. But the Thorogoods warranty worked out very well for me. Red Wings are always solid. Couple updates - I think I’m wrong on the leather, it does appear to be full grain. I’m a week in on them now, no break in, just went to work and punished them. 10-12 hour days. A couple hikes in the snow. Replaced the insoles already. Also had to do a little repair on the welt at the toe/midsole (contact cement). Will add a video on that with the three month follow up. Liking the boots so far. Ton of compliments on them. Good performance out of them.

This is the same leather as the Perry (not select) which is 3+ mm (about 7-8 ounce) and full grain, it’s been tested. So it’s not sanded nubuck, it’s just heavily oiled. The roll top is hardly an indication of lower quality, the Perry with the same leather and price has no roll top, it’s just for making breaking in the upper easier for a worker. My Perry Select boots have similar welt flaws but I’ve never had them let water in even in heavy rain or puddles. That counter thing is pretty weird, I believe the non-select Perry has celastic in the counter so it’s likely that. It’ll likely go away after breaking in the boots. The nails are from the lasting process of attaching the shank to the insole, they’re hammered down if they somehow defeat the last and poke through. My Perry boots have similar nail flats in the insole. Never been a problem personally, I do suggest orthotic inserts though, I am not a fan of the 1972 last vs the 55 or 4811. The leather welt is worlds superior to the plastic pvc welt that Thorogood uses also. Cobblers usually have to replace the plastic welt on the first or second resole due to cracking especially if exposed to extreme weather like hot summers and wet winters regularly. Cheers!

Nice! Makes me feel better about keeping them and wearing them today. I’m not really doing a break-in, I’m just going all in today. Long day ahead, getting these things working hard already. Good traction. Light enough on the foot. Seem supportive enough. I’m also getting some good squish on a cement floor (something I need). Already receiving a lot of compliments on the looks of these things. Very pOsitve there. We’ll see. Good to know about the actual thickness of the leather - tried to measure it with a micrometer - but I disagree on the leather, if this stuff isn’t nubuck, nothing is. And that’s not a bad thing. The padded rolled top I’d also disagree on, I have never seen this on a higher priced boot. But I’m fine with it. I’ll do a follow up in a few months. So far so good.agree on the welt. Yet, I have had good luck with synthetic welts in the past.

@@doublebase6509 awesome! I double checked the website and it says Full Grain oil tanned leather. I couldn’t say personally though since I have no boots in their black (non double shot) leather. As an aside before looking at this video I had never heard of duradero but that much boot for under 250 is crazy! I might buy a pair.

@@Muscovy7 technically I suppose you could always call full grain leather a nubuck, because it is a lightly sanded/corrected full grain. It handles abrasion very well. Probably a very good work leather. Looking forward to working these things hard!
@Bootlosophy
@Bootlosophy 5 месяцев назад
Definitely an oiled nubuck. You can call nubuck “full grain” because it’s not a split leather, not because it has an uncorrected grain as you’d expect.

This is an excellent review. Im a limestone miner and have been wearing throgood boots for years with zero issues. I currently wear the exact pair in your video. This is why i dont buy the pacific northwest boots. I dont believe the value is there for the price. Lotsa hype. Again, great review.

I have the Whites Perry Moc Toe and the Perry hybrid moc toe and they're very comfortable and I expect greater durability out of these as compared to the Thorogood due to the high sneaker material content in the thorogood. Thorogoods synthetic components and tumbled leather are going to feel better out of the box( I recommend them highly to people needing good boots who can't take a long break in period) but they'll break down more quickly. Whites Perry and I assume the rest of their budget line feel great out of the box, so much so that my Perry moc toe hybrid has displaced my Danner Crater Rim as my hiking boot. The stitching on welt does have irregular spacing but it hasn't effected functionality. Good luck with the Fultons.

I’m thoroughly killing these Fultons and they’re holding up very well. Can’t complain. I’m close to 360 miles of walking/working in these things in some harsh conditions and they just don’t care. I also hike in them and mountain bike in them (technical single track), lots of mud, gravel, rocks, hitting stuff. The thicker leather really helps out. Hopefully they can last me a year (I usually get 10 months out of a boot with everyday use).

Not sure how much experience you have with PNW boots. They do hold up way better than thorogood or redwing in toughness. This is a white’s entry level boot but I’d put it up to any mass produced work boot. I used to wear thorogood, ariat, and red wing. They never lasted more than maybe six to eight months of heavy abuse. The soles on these whites will go first but can be replaced fairly cheaply by a local cobbler. I do appreciate the remarks on the stitching. Check out some of the other brands out of Spokane. There’s a little better quality control out of them.

Red Wing heritage? Seriously? Or do you mean their cemented boots?
@doublebase6509
@doublebase6509 6 месяцев назад
I’m expecting the sole to last a good year (maybe more). I do a lot of cement flooring, and I think a vibram sole can hold up pretty well for me. I can get close to a year out of a merramac wedge sole on cement floors (not pavement). Tell you what, I’m extremely happy to hear that you think these will hold up better than Red Wings, because I paid a decent amount for these, and that’s what I’m looking for.

Just an update, after two days the welt began pulling away from the midsole on the right toe. Did some research, bought some contact cement. Repaired it, seems to be holding up. A little disappointed, but I’m not returning them because I am liking the boots and I need them. We’ll see if the contact cement hold up.

I love the 1957s. Almost a perfect boot except the uppers are too soft i feel. The left one collapsed inward after a year and now it rubs on my inside ankle which sucks because it is just about perfect. Im breaking in a redwing 8318. Going to pick up the perry next.

We have similar taste in boots, I have a video on the Red Wing 8138. That was a tough break in for me! As for the Thorogood 1957, I had to replace the factory insoles on them, they were surprisingly just too hard on concrete floors, but I’m liking them. I haven’t had a drop of water get in them yet and I’ve stood in a stream with them. The Fultons are basically the Perry’s but without the wedge soles…I’ve got to say I am loving these boots. I’ve been hammering away at these things for close to three months now. I have around 450 miles of walking/working/hiking/mountain biking, in on these things and the boots are holding up very well. I’ve really come to love the leather on these boots.

Shame because I really was looking forward to owning them. But I’m liking these Fultons so far! Have around 20 tough working hours into them over the last two days.

You have factory seconds, so if you paid for firsts you should be offered a discount or opportunity to get them replaced. Doesn’t seem fair to judge the boot on defects though that are clearly mistakes unless you paid factory second prices.

Yeah, I didn’t pay factory second prices and didn’t expect factory seconds. I plan on keeping them, but I do have a call in to them about the OTHER pair I ordered, which are worse. They say their return department is extremely busy and I may not get a return call/email right away.

As a sewing engineer with over 40 years of experience I watched the stitching errors on the welts/soles. I imagine the quality specs allow for a certain number of long or short stitches as long as all are within the tolerances set for setback from the welt edge so that doesn’t particularly bother me. What does is the piece of “something” stitched into the welt and the sole coming apart at the right toe. While contact cement or Shoe Goo will mend it a brand new boot at a $340 cost should NEVER start off its life with the sole coming unattached. I’d absolutely do a warranty claim. If this is a new model it may be sewing operator error due to being trained or it could be inherent flaws in the construction methods. Either way that boot should never have been allowed out of the factory by quality control. Please consider your future use and know further, more hidden problems could occur.

Breaking them in right now, honestly not bad at all. Ten hours yesterday, do another ten today. I don’t plan to return them - although it looks like the welt was cut too short, and they tried to fit a 1/2 inch piece of welt in there to bridge the gap. Honestly, I don’t care as long as the boots can last (although I imagine they won’t be able to be resoled without replacing the welt. Fingers crossed these hold up because I like them. A ton of complements on them.

You lost me at the leather being too tough. White's uses 2+ mm thick boot leather on all of their boots, and it requires break-in. Thorogood uses thinner leather that's tumbled. Halfway through, I'm thinking you need to go back to the mall for your boots. PNW is not your jam. That's OK. I have a nearly 2 year old pair of Fulton boots. I got them because they don't have an arch. My foot got crushed by a car, so my arch fell in my left foot. I love them. I bought them to replace a pair of Thorogood mocs, and these have lasted twice as long so far. I didn't check the stitching though. Lol

That Thorogood boot I hold up in the video is a 2.5 mm thick leather, otherwise I agree - their other boots are in the 2.0-2.2 tumbled leather range. Someone else posted that the Fultons uses the same as the Perry moc toe (2.8 mm thick). If that’s the case, I’m thrilled. Honestly, that’s what I want. But these don’t feel that thick to me right now, and it definitely feels like a nubuck leather, but maybe I’m wrong, maybe it is just heavily waxed and very lightly corrected/sanded. But yes, I do appreciate tough leather. I do LOVE PNW boots. I love leather stacks/55 lasts. I’ll be putting an orthopedic insole in on these. Wore them ten hours yesterday, seemed to do pretty well!! Absolutely punished them for a first day wear….salt, snow removal, some welding, oil, grease, kicking a strut of a steering knuckle (used the shank section). I’ll post back in a few months.

@@Muscovy7hey thanks, honestly I just love boot discussion. Doesn’t matter, any boot talk is good with me. By the way, thanks for the info on the leather - went back and checked on the Perry originals leather thickness (2.8 mm), if these are 2.8mm thick, then I’m VERY happy about THAT. I’ll measure them with a micrometer at work, I couldn’t get a proper measurement at home with my mic…the frame wasn’t large enough to reach over the eyelet section

@@Muscovy7just an update. I think you’re right on the leather, after a week of working in them the leather does appear to look/feel a little more like full grain instead of nubuck. I did add insoles, went with Super Feet Green for the arch support. Also had to do a small repair on the welt up on the right toe section where the welt meets the midsole. Started pulling away slightly after day two. Seems like the repair is holding up (contact cement).
