Ever stop to read those historical sign posts on the side of the road? I stopped to read one at American Beach on Amelia Island in northern Florida. I learned that the beach was created by a black millionaire named Abraham Lincoln Lewis as a place for black Americans to go during segregation, when they were not allowed on the white-only beaches in nearby Jacksonville.
I also learned about Franklintown near American Beach, which was founded by former enslaved people after they were freed by Union troops during the Civil War. I even found the Franklintown cemetary where some residents were laid to rest.
So much history in one little sign post. Discover a quick history of black and white Americans with me at this unique and beautiful spot on Florida's northern coast.
