I came on this just hoping to get a response. I never see you do leg locks. Is that because you are mostly in gi or can you get away without leg attacks no gi? I have seen that no go is leg locks and wrestling up. Do you study leg locks or just anti leg locks
@@jonathanwilliams1746 I have decent leg locks but they're not what I focus on like so many do. I use them as a tool instead of making them my game. I'll do some in the next rolls so people can learn them too more 🙂
Thankyou everyone for all the encouragement. Definitely a whole different world going from gym rolls to competition rolls. I can not overstate how tired I was going into that last match. It still bugs me that I lost because I gassed out but we live and we learn
Respect for a very good first competition! I 100% get how it feels gassing out. You did a lot of hard work after stepping up to do what 99% of people will never do. Bro you did amazing. You should be very proud. Anyone would be stoked if that was there first competition result. It gets a little easier every comp you do. The Nerves really makes your gas tank smaller than usual and as you compete more those nerves aren’t as bad. Good luck in your future tournaments and congratulations!!

I really love the videos where you critique a lower belt’s decisions and their techniques during a roll. I think a lot of us, myself included, do not have that support and thus continue to reinforce bad habits. More of these type of videos please!
@@Hewrin88 thank you 🙏 Yes I got to say I was pretty frustrated with my self at first, but now I see that stepping on the mat was already my accomplishment. And seeing the positive it showed me technique is great but it got to be paired with conditioning. Technique works in class bc you dont go 100%...but damn in competition you also need a lot more

Now You need to see why you lost and go back to the lab 🙏 And start doing more conditioning if you can. ( don't worry I got my hip displaced first match of my first comp 😭😂 soreness and hurt only means you gave all you had

I earned my blue belt 20 years ago, stopped practicing now I’m 42 and getting back into it. I had option to start from blue again but I chose to start from scratch as white, It’s amazing how much basic stuff I forgot but I still remeber a good amount of technical stuff lol. I love your vids, so helpful. Both of my sons have been practicing for over a year now and learn alot from your vid’s as well. Congrats Jesse!!! GG

Good stuff! My kids started jiu jitsu last August, and the deal was if they started…..I started too I can’t believe how much fast my kiddos have progressed in the last 8 months, as they brought home 3 golds, a silver and a bronze at their first tournament. I played in a lot of big football games in college, but watching my kids compete in a combat sport for the first time was as nervous as I’ve ever been in my life! I was so proud of them, that I couldn’t resist when they asked me if I would do a competition next. So in a few weeks….at 42 years old…I’ll be stepping on the mats for real. So glad BJJ found its way into my family’s life.
Your breakdown/narration skills are really top notch. Not so much that folks get lost, but not so basic that we walk away with little. Thanks so much coach.
Love the videos!! My first tournament I got injured about 2 minutes in to my first match. Not Awesome. Love seeing these commentaries though. I always get something new out of it!
Amazing content as usual. Truly appreciate your channel and commentaries. It would be great to see an instructional/tutorial on how to recover from Cross Face Half Guard position as the guy in bottom, the position Jesse's opponent was in at minute 4:33. As super heavy weight guard player, I face quite bit of trouble breaking out of said position when I am too late avoiding it. Amazing effort Jesse, keep at it.

White belt content is so interesting to watch, because in my mind I feel like I move like Jordan... but when I see the white belts I realize that's what I probably look like hahah
Very helpful analysis, thanks for sharing. I was there the next day, for my 3rd white belt tournament in Masters. Not many round robin BJJ tournaments around but this was a great way to gain experience when I might have only had 1 match in a typical single elimination tournament.
Awesome footage, Grappling Industries was my first tournament as a white belt also. Any tips to not get so gassed ? I was surprised at how tired i got, totally different from club rolling.
The more you compete the calmer you'll be. Also doing hiit should help substantially as well. If you have a resting heart rate over 60bpm some slow and steady cardio would be wise too.
As a long time judoka (from 6 to about 38) im still amazed and a bit dazzled by the complexity of BJJ. we learn a lot of technique but tachiwaza (standing) for us is much more about feel, and strength and timing than it is about having a precise positional counter to every move. I watch this (and thoughni was good on the ground, and did some bjj) and think, I simply couldnt remember everything Id need to know to figt BJJ effectively.
On the opposite side, having done BJJ...It's just incredible to me how complex your game of destabilisation/take down is in judo AND the sheer amount of explosivity each of a judoka moves have in them. The only people I know who have that amount of pressure are Wrestlers. The combination of the two is scary. I've seen friends like that who did both and having someone who can take you down 10 times out of 10 and finish you after is scary
useful theory tip you give: cross body control - if you only have a leg hook in on one side, you want your arms to hook the opposite side (like via seat belt grip). commenting so I remember!

I'd like a video for guys over 30 who are just starting. Is there any hope for us at our age to ever do any tournaments. I feel like I'll either get out enduranced by the young bucks or out skilled by the guys who are my age but started 20 years ago. Tips or tricks for starting later in life with a lot more joint issues and longer recovery needs would be nice
There's masters division for a reason! Any age is a great age to start. You don't need to be the best to have a good time and there's plenty of over 30 years olds that get really good!
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu I watch a lot of your videos on the focus of being a white belt. Are there any other special considerations for older beginners going into those Master Divisions you'd advise.
I started Jiu-jitsu at around 35. I've competed and am a blue belt. I can now handle younger/athletic white belts, where when I started at a white belt, this wasn't the case. Just keep training. There will be ups and downs, but just embrace the journey.
I'm only 2 months in to this bjj and I have held my own vs mid-20s dudes via strength alone. I'm mid-40s but am in excellent shape. Before this, I kickboxed, but the cardio is different. Knowledge and experience is the Only thing that is beating me not strength or youth.
Seeing these guys compete has inspired me, I've been hesitant as my submission offense game is poor but luckily my weasel out of positions and submission game is average :)

@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu the Gap being - Helping people see what both people were doing right and what needs works, what is important: grips, head control, feet on your opponent, or what grips aren’t important. This is why your commentary videos are helpful and successful, but you are doing them at a higher level than guys like your white belt student…not everything you do is even being thought of by a white or blue. So, the Gap in content that you are filling and having success with is commentary on beginner level and what a black is thinking. Does that make sense? Paul

Bro this was a great vid, we need more of these. My first tournament I was winning by points but in the last 10 seconds I turned and gave my opponent my back giving him just enough points to beat me - I use to Wrestle in higher school hence why I did what I did. Lesson learned!
In my first tournament i had 2Wins by submission 1L by points and a silver medal. Never got a gold medal in 5 years lots of silver, craig jones would be proud of me
I think because he imitated the pull long before the grabbing of the legs it didn't count. I've had the same thing work agaisnt me in the past. Thought I should have got points for it but didn't.
My first tournament was a double elimination, I lost my first match after 1 hour and 15 minutes. My opponent had 2 stripes and was put up 20 pounds, I was already at the top of my weight bracket so I (175) had probably close to 30 pounds on the guy. He was way better than me but I was way stronger and wouldnt let him submit me for so long. I was being dominated the whole match which pretty much consisted of him passing my guard, trying an arm bar or cross collar, me escaping and getting him back in my guard. I was able to win my next two matches though and got bronze! BJJ is awesome, Jordan has taught me a lot and I hope to do better in my next tourney because of him!
I really hope I win at least 1 fight in my first tournament. It will be in 2 months but I'm already scared as hell. This white belt did a great job. Thanks for the video
Can't do worst than me, displaced my hip first fight, and lost 6 times in a row. Advice after having done a few competitions, think of common senarios and have no more than one or two things you can do in that scenario. If you have more than that you will lose time thinking of which one to do and loose opportunities. Second cardio, cardio and more cardio, even when i did 8x6 minutes rolling in classes, one comp fight had me gasping for air. Third warmup early and stay warm, don't let your body rest too much in between fights. And last for the time you have, during rolling in classes try to put yourself in bad positions to not be afraid and freeze when you are put in thoses. Hope it helps !
Can you do a video of passing/dealing with a taller opponent as a small opponent? I always run. Into problems with the length of extremely lengthy/tall opps and me being a power lifter at 5’8 190-200lbs I’m always going against the 6’4+ opp
Hi, when my back is taken, I activate the war modus and of course I know after that I will be gas out. Is that a good strategy? (I practice BJJ since November 2023)
second match, minute 3:54 in video.. jesse does an illegal grab of gi with fingers in pant sleeve? am i wrong? asking only cause 2 months into white belt and always accidently get my fingers inside gis and my coach tells me its illegal
Great job Jesse as with nearly everybodys first competition you are probably much better than how you performed in your matches but nerves make you forget some fundamentals and get you tired more easily, handy breakdown Jordan

As a white belt who recently started competing, I greatly appreciate the video. I had to do 3 Tournaments to rack as many Ws as Jesse did in one go. My main question is: why pull guard? Especially in the last match, it looked like he had a better grip and probably comparable size/strength to his opponent, and better posture for a takedown. Did he lose points by pulling guard in this rule set? Does he just feel he is so good at guard that its better to pull guard all the time? Was this a gameplan you discussed with him? The last match, looks like he could have done some more wrestling and attempted a judo throw or shot a single leg to get a 2p takedown. Just curious.

@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu that would be awesome although those foot sweeps he was showing looked really painful (I mean for the guy going down):P There are plenty of foreigners like me living here who would happily take part in it and you could also do like a half day seminar in a few gyms across Thailand (or in Bkk if you don't wanna travel too far), gym where I train here hosted 2 lately one from judo nomad who travels the world teaching and one yesterday from a European champion in judo and bjj teaching guard passing combined with foot attacks. This month we are also getting new mat so all is set and waiting for you! Generally it would make the most sense if you make it around the time when one of the big tournaments in BKK takes place like Siam Cup in July/December as there are plenty of foreigners coming from other closeby countries to compete for a weekend (when I competed in Siam Cup last year there were 850 people competing that day). Once you guys have a plan I will be happy to help you organising stuff over here as I have been living here for a while so know how things work:)
Man I was loving BJJ, but for some reason my hands couldn’t take all the grip fighting are we’re constantly sore. Maybe I just need to strengthen them but it felt like I had severe arthritis
Taping and grip training, brother. I was having a blast until we started learning spider/lasso/DLR and it fucked my fingers big time. 2-3 months of training with tape helped me a lot and I also used to do dead hangs and etc. on the fingers as much as I could. Nowadays, it's way better.
Im almost 48 and Jordan can attest that I wrap my hands/wrist before every class and it gets me through the night, although I do take advil before every class as well...I also have severe arthritis, 2 surgeries and chronic pain but it helps a lot. I was asked by probably 10 ppl in almost 4 years if its worth it and i say hell yeah it is!! Hope you can find your way through!
