White-crowned Sparrows are common in western Oregon. Adults have black and white head stripes. Fledglings are brown and streaky, and soon thereafter, immature birds look similar to adults but have tan and brown head stripes. They have sweet songs that vary between individuals and from place to place.

I have been hearing these sweet birds for years, and just got close enough to identify them - one came 10ft from me, looking direct at me, and sang his lovely melody! Their enchanting song has always touched my heart, uplifting me to the heights of joy!

I have had the same quest, heard it in Colorado, and could not identify it.

Ah, I love these birds. They usually pop up around mid-winter (January-February) here in Northern Orange County, California. Surprisingly, they're pretty friendly - I've had them come up to look at me while on walks. I notice they hang out in groups of four to five birds. They have such a beautiful song that I enjoy hearing early in the morning(s), right at the break of dawn.

Have them here in Northern California as well and they are hanging out with the regular sparrows. So interesting.

"My" White-crowned sparrows here in Santa Barbara have much prettier songs than those of the sparrows in your vid. I look forward to hearing that sweet, sweet sound. Our W-c migrate through, and showed up here around about Oct. 10. I can hear them singing right now. Heaven.

A positively magnificent video! SO informative! I am currently trying to tell the differences between the sparrows and other birds that all look similar/identical to me. This kind of video is just what I need, something with some great information telling me what to look for! Thanks!!!

It's taken me forever to find what bird it was in my mother's front yard. This is it! It's March here in Central California so I'm sure this is it's winter home. I doubt I will see them much longer. Thank you for posting!

I just saw and heard one this morning in Southern California, and, as you said, its song did vary a little at the end. But it was only today that I was able to identify the bird with its song. In years past, I would either see the bird or hear its song, but never together. It must travel through this area, because I hear it only in the spring and autumn.

I heard new bird song earlier today and after darkness fell, along came a white-crowned sparrow to my feeder. I live in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. It's March 26th today.

They may stick around. If not in your yard, perhaps they'll nest somewhere nearby?
