One of the deadliest snipers ever to roam the face of the earth was Simo Häyhä, who fought on the Finnish side during the Winter War in 1939 and 1940. He was also known as White Death, as he killed an estimated 500 Russians in the cold snowy winter.

This episode is one of the most frequently requested songs for Sabaton History. And while the story of Simo Häyhä is a compelling story, the Winter War was about much more than the deadliest sniper of World War Two. We have made an earlier episode about the Winter War, based on the Sabaton Song 'Talvisota', which is Finnish for Winter War. You can watch that right here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6grVeu3EWis.html. If after that, you're keen to dive even deeper into the history of the Winter War, I suggest you check out Indy's 'World War Two' channel, where he covered the Winter War (and everything before and after that) week by week. You can check that out right here: ru-vid.com If you would like to gain early access to our Sabaton History episodes and actively support this awesome project that we are so passionate about, you can do so by joining our Patreon community. Oh, come on guys. I have been begging you guys to play this song live on Graspop as on Wacken. And on neither festivals, you guys have not played this song. I am not going to deny that I am happy you guys do this song plus the shirt Indy wears is great plus the background was great. But seriously guys, do this song when you guys roll by in Antwerp. It would be my sixth time to see you guys there. But still, this episode was great. And now, we can learn more about my favorite person from history.

That is something that only came thing in cold-war era and mainly in Afganistan/Iraq mountains. You just cant fire accurately past 200-300m with Iron sight and 500m was quite extreme even for scoped sniper rifle. After 1000m You need to take lots of things to consideration: How many times wind changes direction/speed,Earth rotation...Also things like quality of bullet is really important for sniping. We didnt have special ammo for snipers like Soviets,Germans and US had in WW2. Simo like everybody in Finnish army would use normal rifle bullets that were not specially made for higher quality.

I have no doubt that Simo was a highly skilled soldier, but I love how most of his success is just attributed to thinking ahead, practice, and experience. Never becoming complacent or overconfident and always giving it his best made him into the legend that he is today.

Ive heard, that finns would knock on Soviet tanks' cockpit doors (the things where you got inside), grenade in hand. When the Soviet tank crew opened it, they threw the grenade in, and sat on the door thingy. When the crew was killed, theyd simply drag the corpses out, and hijack the tank. Could someone clarify if this is true or not? Id live to know Ps. Sorry for poor english, im not familiar with some words

I hope Sabaton writes something about the Continuation war, maybe a whole album about Scandinavia around WW2? My Grandfather passed away June 6th this year, he served as a child in the Winter War. Not as a soldier per se, but he helped civilians and their Cattles escpae the russians artillery and air raids. First the finnish veterans guild didn't want to earn him a Veteran title, but after some time they acknowledge him and many other children who helped behind the front. He saw plenty of death, and his last memories in life was of the bread crumbs he had in his pockets in that winter and told us to never stop feed the horses or they wouldn't follow because of the bombs. (He didn't have horses as an adult or elder). I know this isn't about Simo Häyä, and i loved this episode.

I think the original article used the finnish word "jääkäri", the term for infantry. The word is derived from swedish/german "jaeger" for hunter. So the meaning of the original text would have been closer to "Finnish infantryman, 1940"

I really do enjoy getting these little snippets of how Sabaton evolved over the years, that bit about how writing “White Death” was in some ways the first step towards writing the “Heroes” album was very interesting to me. And again, you guys manage to teach me something I didn’t know before; I knew Simho Häyää survived being shot in the face (which is impressive enough as it is), but I had no idea he went on to live to the age of 97! Sad that he lost his home from the peace agreement, but I’m happy to learn that he at least went on to have a long and peaceful life after the war. Thanks again to Indy and Joachim for a great video, and to all the guys in Sabaton for a great song! 👍🤘

In a world where war has found a new face, the wages fought in comments, reviews, and the infinite tangle that is social conduct, I hope Sabaton will know now and forever that they should be seen as legends of similar heart as the heroes they sing for. The fact my mentioning of this would if seen insight, no doubt, thousands if not millions of voices demanding my head, or any of those that would speak of comparing a mere band, to war heroes that fought so hard, is only proof that the comparison holds. In these troubling times, when so few can be trusted among the many that used to be, the popular forces that we admired only to find were elevated by a lying face and a charming outside, I find solace that Sabaton will never be on the list of those that lied to us, and listen comfortably knowing Sabaton rock with good will and value honor and kindness above all. God speed, you magnificent bastards
