Buyer Beware! A lot of guides on the internet are outdated and made pre-pandemic. Take into account lifestyle is what I tell people all the time. What do you want me to talk about next?
The process you go through to make a custom piece/new design!! (Start to finish; step by step.) We’re saving for a band I’ve sketched to go with my diamond ring. I love your work & I can’t wait until (hopefully) you can bring my dream to a reality! 😍🥰😘
How did we not discuss PRICE of platinum vs PRICE OF MAINTAINING white gold?!? I was WAITING for her thoughts on this!! Also, if you want to keep your platinum looking “new” does it need to be buffed or dipped & the price of that related to gold!!! I need more than 4MINUTES, Mrs. Bonnie!!!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💞
@@kayeru4369 My OG engagement wedding ring is 18k yellow gold. It’s INCREDIBLY SOFT!! I have to be SO CAREFUL WITH IT. For our 24th wedding anniversary, my husband bought me a platinum & diamond ring!! I LOVE the weight of the metal!! I’m not fond of the patina, but that can be fixed. I will not purchase another 18k piece of jewelry. (I only have 3 pieces that are 18K & everything else is 14k!! I love yellow & rose gold, but if I buy anything else white, it will be platinum, too!!😍) I’ve sketched out a ring that I want next to go with my platinum ring & when we buy it, I would like Bonnie to make it!! I just her workmanship & the ring would have to be custom anyway!!
Platinum is incredibly hard to work on. Scratches cannot be buffed out easily and requires more than double the heat of gold to work on. All maintenance and repairs will cost you 2-3x the price of a gold repair.
the maintenance of white gold is highly dependable on your lifestyle, which determines how frequent you'll need replating. Also where you bring in your white gold piece for replating vary in price as each jeweler charge you at a difference price depend on the size of the the metal. please learn to use your brain a little.
@@rubiirae I have questions, so I ask it of a jewelry maker I highly trust, & that makes you say I need to “use my brain more”?!? Seriously?!? What did I do to you? I said I need more of Miss Bonnie, not your JUDGEMENT!!🤯🙄
Hi Bonnie !!! Great video !!! My wedding set is set in platinum and I agree it wears beautifully over time , never losing it original color. I also love the heaviness of the rings , it makes me feel luxurious !!!!
My original wedding set is white gold. I’ve re-plated it once in 12 years. My anniversary band is platinum, and I love the weight and feel of it much more. My ring upgrade will be platinum to match the anniversary band.
I have 18k white gold rings and platnum rings. I wish I had made all my rings in platnum. They don't wear away the metal shifts, they don't need rodium every year to look correct. They can as mentioned above be polished without loss of material. Stones are more securely held. If you leave has a nice patina. You clean in soap and warm water. I'm not saying it's perfect but it's much easier to live with.
Just traded my old marquee diomond ( that has been sitting at the bottom of my jewelry box for about five years ) for a smaller, better quality round natural diamond. Had it custom designed by a fantastic jeweler and set in Platinum. I've always wanted Platinum but due to the cost I settled for white gold. Well I'm 56 now and I figure I've earned it. Picking it up this weekend. Can't wait!
Perfect timing 💕 A thing I didn't mention in the video is: if you want to have or have a family and would like to pass something down, then consider platinum. Whenever I come across heirloom jewelry, it's usually platinum for a reason.
I like the sheen of rhodium on white gold. If you treat your ring well, you could go your whole life without needing a replating. Getting it replated is not that big a deal. My husbands yellow gold ring has lost its design from wear over the last forty years but mine is still perfect. I did get all the prongs redone at thirty years because it contains a row of baguettes. I don’t like the grayish look of platinum over time and the ring can’t have as fine details.
Would white gold be better for a half eternity band? my e-ring is platinum but my jeweller insists I get i use white gold for my eternity band because she said it's stronger so that the diamonds are safer bcs the prongs would be stronger. is that true? thank you! :(
Yes, the concept is similar to rose gold. Like white gold, rose gold jewelry is often plated with rhodium to enhance its shine and durability. Over time, this plating can wear off, revealing the underlying metal. However, because rose gold already has warm undertones due to the copper content, the change in color as the plating wears off is less noticeable compared to white gold.
Hi bonnie, if my engagement ring is in platinum, would it be a BIG NO to go for eternity ring made of 18k whitegold ? The jeweler said that it will not scratch my platinum ring... let me know !! and thanks for the video as always :)
Hi! It's not a big no to mix platinum and 18k white gold, but keep in mind that platinum is harder and may scratch the white gold over time. If you're okay with this, it should be fine. 😊💍
all you need is a quick google search and common sense. rose gold is just yellow gold where the 25% of alloys is mixed with some copper to give that pink tint.
I have several of each & they’ve aged very very well!! I take very good care of my jewelry, but no other dipping has been required. Stick with 14K for durability, though!! I hate my 18K pieces b/c I’ve had to have several bands built back up!! I don’t even wear them frequently! If you have a gorgeous piece that you’ve worked hard for, you want to ENJOY IT!!!😆💞
Different metals they mix it with to get the different colors both will use 18 or 14k or whatever of pure gold. I believe rose gold is mostly copper but there are different recipes for all of them and they all have slightly different properties when it comes to jewelry making but will be similar
team platinum all the way. it is forever beautiful. The fact that wht gold needs to be re-plated to get rid of that yellow tone cheapens it IMO . It reminds me of having plated custom jewelry even thought I know with wht gold it is obviously gold.
Oh, honey! Firstly, thank you 💕 and secondly, that's how it starts! First its one, then two, then its a collection. I love the idea of passing down something and jewelry is a great option for that.
I’m definitely a platinum girl! I’ve had a lot of white gold Diamond rings and quite frankly I get tired of having to send it off to get dipped because it’s turning yellow again. Prior to covid I was washing my hands like crazy due to my profession so platinum is the only option for me!
If I had my time over when choosing an engagement ring/wedder and had been well informed on the rhodium plating cost for the life of the ring, I would’ve chosen platinum. I now have a 5 stone ring in platinum and love it.
Very informative. Can you a video comparing 14k yellow gold these?! Also if you got a yellow gold ring could you ever get it dipped in rhodium and turn it into white gold temporarily (however long the rhodium lasts on it) and also after it wore off would the underneath yellow gold look exactly how it looked before?? Thank you!!❤
My grandmother’s engagement ring 💍 that was passed down to me is Platinum and I’ve always been partial to it since then so pretty much all my jewelry is Platinum ❤
That tends to be the case with heirloom and family jewelry. If it's 100 years old, it's likely platinum. I think another factor to consider is if you have family plans and want to pass something down - platinum is a major consideration.
I appreciate you greatly. I am here to give value. I do the same for my exclusive clientele, viewers, fans, friends, family, everyone! I appreciate you watching and commenting so much!
@@ByBonnieJewelry my pleasure always,….cannot miss a video or a short!…its sheer excellence,…the knowledge, the presentation, the timing etc. etc. Not to exclude the view,.. a most beautiful woman with fascinating class!…God bless You Always. 🙏🏻❤️😊
Wait I’m confused. If platinum is denser (sturdier, not as soft as gold?) wouldn’t one with a 1.5 mm band want that instead of gold? I was always told gold is soft, is that not true?
Great question! It's all about finding the right balance between density and thickness. When platinum gets slimmed down, it starts to bend easier. For gold, on the other hand, it all depends on what karat of gold it is. What I'm referring to in this video is 14K White Gold, which is mixed in with different alloy to make it sturdier for daily wear. 24K pure gold is actually very soft and not suitable to use as an engagement ring metal. Context, lifestyle, craftsmanship, all these things matter when choosing your metal, stone, etc. I hope this helps!
@@ByBonnieJewelry I will never buy an 18K gold ring again. Yes, the gold is GORGEOUS NEW, but it wears SO EASILY & is very expensive to size for aging knuckles. I actually had a couple of jewelers tell me it was just as durable to get us to spend more $$$ over the years!! That worked when I was in my 20’s, but NOW I’ve lived & learned; it’s 14k or platinum here on out!! lol!!! I take EXTREMELY good care of my jewelry, too!! I work in Medicine, so I only wear a gold band & earrings!! (I’ve gotta have SOME BLING!!) When I work out, I wear silicone, or nothing. I only have 3 pieces of white gold (for about 15yrs each) & they still look new!! Love your work, BTW!! Gorgeous ELEGANCE!!💞
I am old school. When I got engaged yellow gold was popular and I still prefer it on my skin tone now. I like 14 carat yellow gold. It is not too yellow.
Here is the hardness of various alloys of gold vs platinum, white gold is hardly harder (no pun intended) when it has to be less than 50% gold lol 24k gold (pure gold): 2.5 - 3 18k white gold (75% gold): 3.5 - 4 14k white gold (58.3% gold): 4 - 4.5 10k white gold (41.7% gold): 4.5 - 5 999 platinum (pure platinum): 4 - 4.5
My skin is sensitive, so I typically wear 24k gold earrings, and now my new favorite platinum earrings and bracelets. My wedding band is also platinum! Colors stay well!
Platinum is the best, but it should always be 90-10 platinum iridium. That’s shiner and whiter than any other metal and it’s much more scratch resistant than the typical 95-5 iridium. That 95-5 iridium is why people think platinum gets a patina so quickly. 95-5 ruthenium is also okay, but it’s not as shiny and white and is harder to work with. It’s also significantly cheaper than the 90-10 so that’s why it’s used by many companies like Tiffany. People may think 90-10 is less pure but if you know about atomic weights, it almost uses the same amount of platinum as the 95-5 ruthenium and looks better. White gold has to keep being re-plated and eventually shows the yellow underneath. It’s a lower quality option that should only be used if people can’t afford the platinum
If platinum is soft and malleable, does that mean the ring can bend easily? Would that also mean the prongs holding the precious diamond would also bend easily? 😱
Platinum is indeed softer than some metals, but it's still highly durable and resistant to wear and tear. While it's more malleable than some other metals, it's still strong enough to hold precious stones securely. The prongs holding diamonds are crafted to be robust and sturdy, ensuring that they can withstand daily wear and tear. However, like any piece of fine jewelry, regular maintenance and care are essential to preserve its longevity and appearance.😍🫶
I grew up in gold country Nevada City, CA. I’ve never seen “white” gold in any jewelry store. As far as I’m concerned there’s only such thing as white gold. Gold is gold. Period.
Worn platinum looks like aluminum. I don't like anything white metal on my expensive jewellery and none of that rose gold nonsense that looks like cheap copper. Gold needs to be yellow!
I love how firm you are on this belief, lol. I actually used to really love rose gold. I still do but I also love the look of “old world” ancient looking heirloom jewelry. I could never figure out why everything in rose gold just didnt give me that look. Then I read, rose gold is relatively new! It was created by carl faberge in the 19th century and didnt really become popular until the 1920’s. Thats why I think when I see it, it never really gives me that ancient look. However! With my skin tone, silver looks better on me than gold. So I always thought I would prefer platinum jewelry. But I started wearing silver promise rings to prepare for my upgrade. And personally I hated that when put next to my friends who have white gold or platinum rings. You cannot tell the difference at all! It looks the same! So now, I dont care if silver or platinum looks better on me. I want gold, lol. Im still on the hunt for a perfect rose gold ring because I prefer the less yellow look and the higher the gold karat weight in rose gold the less copper it looks, so theres that. Also I feel safer wearing my silver pieces when im just out and about because I get nervous wearing nicer pieces on vacay or a big city but thats a long rant to say. Different strokes for different folks 😊
