"White Heat" is a great gangster movie. It might also be the first caper film, full of industrial-era technology like locomotives and radio tracking. Cagney doesn't hold back. He plays a sociopath with a mother-complex and other problems. Highly recommended.

James Cagney plays one of the most complex psychopathic killers ever portrayed on film. He played it perfectly.

Just got into watching old black and white movies a month ago. Been ripping through Bogart and Cagney movies and THIS movie is my instant favorite! That ending is pure Hollywood! Watch this movie now if you like mafia/gangster movies.

Key largo and the killers are really good gangster noir. Not many noir movies are that exceptional. The lost weekend is my favourite it's about a alcoholic and for me its the best non gangster noir and possibly the best anyway. I'm open minded about movies from any decade as long as they stick out from the crowd. Best bogart for me was the big sleep and key largo and the treasure of Sierra madre the others a worth a watch but probably not keepers. Ive seen most of the noir films now. Back to the 80s and 90s now . 60s and 70s movies are few and far between. Under the influence is a brilliant film and runaway train is a amazing action movie when baddies were real baddies. 👌 and if you have never seen psycho 1960 that's a must.

@rayfinkle9369 Год назад
@@stevenlupanko2983 Yeah I've definitely seen a few of those. But I'm gonna have to add The Lost Weekend to my list, so thanks for that recommendation :) My highest rated b/w films so far are White Heat, Double Indemnity, Night And The City, Out of the Past, Sunset Boulevard, Rebecca, All About Eve, The Roaring Twenties, Psycho, Gone With The Wind, High Sierra, Notorious, The Killing, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, The Lady From Shanghai... and there are probably another 20 + in the next level down for me (several Hitchcock).
@stevenlupanko2983
@stevenlupanko2983 Год назад
@@rayfinkle9369 I'm still working my way through some of the old movies, still not seen double indemnity. The only Hitchcock movies I like were vertigo , rear window and psycho. Psycho is his best by a mile , I don't personally like the leads in most his movies and think his movies are overrated, Billy wilder was making better movies 15-20 years before Hitchcock. But as always its about preference. I have a soft spot for comedy horrors but at the same time on golden pond is one of my favourite movies. Just glad there is so many movies to choose from.

@@stevenlupanko2983 As a fan of Hitchcock, that really hurts to hear, ofc Billy Wilder is great and he did plenty of movies in varied genres, but Hitchcock was a master of his craft in directing, editing and the themes, he perfected it back when he was still making movies in England (those are a must), probalby his popularity back in the day it's only comparable to Christopher Nolan nowadays (given that both are british and deal with thrillers, I just like the genre, and both are my favourite directors), I started with Psycho like most people, I initially thought he was only a horror filmmaker, then I saw why he was called the Mastero of Suspense. And given that film noir is probably my favorite genre from golden Hollywood (not to forget neo-noirs), to say that not many of this film are that exceptional, bro really? It would be like saying that many superheroe movies nowadays aren't great, the closest to that were westerns and musicals, and there are still several jewels in those genres (if you like them, of course).

IMO, this is Cagney‘s greatest gangster role & in some ways his best performance in ANY film. His Oscar nominated performance in LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, fine as he usually is, pales in comparison with this, one of the best gangster films Hollywood ever produced. As Cody Jarrett, Cagney was not even NOMINATED & should have won that year despite Broderick Crawford‘s interesting but lesser performance compared with Cagney‘s. His reaction to his ma‘s death imay seem operatically over the top but for me is in keeping with his totally unhinged character. Wycherly as his ma is another master stroke even if some of how they are played may seem dated now. No matter their interactions still have their intended effect. Mayo is better than usual & Steve Cochran does a fine job in a typical role for him. A classic to be sure then & now.

It's nothing against Broderick Crawford winning an Oscar for best actor in a film, but once it comes to James Cagney gangster films like "White Heat ", how can it be that he wasn't even nominated at all that year????

What a absolute blinding movie 🎬 I was dumbfounded how good this was. Its great because like a lot of the film noir it's not in situ. Car chases that actually look like proper stunt men are driving them it's way way ahead of it's time. Brilliant tension this is James cagneys best role how he won a oscar and got 2 nomination for other movies and not this is beyond me. Check out his acting honestly it's deniro cape fear quality but the script and plot are even better. This is not a stagnant film noir.

@@jesustovar2549 The two Bobbys battling it out, eh? Love it. Both phenomenal. I'll take the sleepy eyed tough guy because he did it first and scary like a King Cobra with camouflauge. But Bobby D can melt a candle on his fist like no mother-effer you ever seen. All the while while speaking in tongues. Mesmerizing.

I enjoyed White Heat for Cagney and not much else. But even the “mother complex” angle of his character is ridiculous and laughable. The police feel like actors from a PSA from the era. Stiff and boring. Honestly, it felt like a cartoon or a parody. But Cagney transcends the material.
