Obama was scrutinized by the public and media just the same as any other president, the only reason people now look back and claim he got off lightly is because of the intense passion with which people talk about the current president. Plus, when did anyone on this show accuse the family of vicious racism? Certainly the president himself has been called a racist many times, usually legitimately, but generally speaking his family don't tend to make nearly as outlandish claims, and so don't generally get called racists, since there's not a wealth of evidence as to whether they are or not. There were some jokes here about refugees, but that's in direct response to the way Melania specifically reacted to the child internment of refugees a few months back. I think those jokes are intended to be topical more than anything, and remind people of the more questionable of Melania's actions, rather than to baselessly accuse her of vicious racism just because she's associated with the president. It's perfectly possible to have a smart, informed opinion, and for that opinion to result in strong hatred of an individual. Simply having a "strong hatred" isn't grounds to accuse someone of not being smart, I'd argue that the process by which they came to that conclusion, and how well they can back up their emotions, are much more important in determining that. I also completely agree that there is a genuine danger in the monotonous consumption and absorption of media, but although Colbert certainly holds a very clear political view, it's nonetheless a comedy show, and a topical comedy show is going to make fun of whoever happens to be in power.
