This interview reinforces my belief that Harry Truman was the most down-to-earth president of the 20th century, and that his current family members retain that lack of pretentiousness. Thanks for sharing.
I knew very little about Harry Truman until I happened to see a hardback copy of David McCullough's Pulitzer Prize winning biography "Truman" on a sale table for something like $6.99 about fifteen years ago. Since McCullough is one of the best writers among historians, I bought the book and my eyes were opened to the life of Harry Truman. I cannot recommend the book enough. And, in today's Amazon world, you can probably pick up a mint condition copy for a few dollars.
I heard a story that someone in the middle of the war mentioned to Eleanor Roosevelt about the creaks and sounds of the WH. She agreed that it was in some disrepair, but said, "that these were the same creaks and groans that Lincoln heard." Yes, I can't see Mamie doing the laundry either ...
My father served in U.S. navy as a radio technician on 2 wooden minrsweeper clearing mines in Tokyo bay. He received honorary discharge 3rd class and also received letter from President Harry Truman. How would I send paperwork to Truman library?
Just give them an inquiry call. They'll advise you on how best to preserve and send for it or have it delivered. Typically they really like letting people who bring things in get a good look at the place and explore.
