Introduce young students to the concepts of white light, color, and optical filters with these demonstrations! Follow along with this video to get students’ brains and hands active.
In order to follow along and do the demonstrations yourself, you’ll need:
- A flashlight
- A diffraction grating (Google “educational diffraction grating”)
- A set of optical filters (Google “educational color filter paddles”)
If possible, we recommend breaking up students into small teams and having each of them have one set of these supplies. But if you don’t have these supplies, you can still watch the video to introduce your students to the world of optics!
White light is made up of all of the colors of the rainbow, and these experiments help students visualize that. Engineers use these same concepts in all kinds of world-changing applications from medical devices, to helping robots see, to sorting fruits and vegetables.

hi Edmund optics, I am a new phd students in optics, I am wondering if there is any application for the meta lens? The meta lens is very popular in the research field, but after all most 20 years of research, I hardly find a useful product. For the optics system I understand they are still traditional optical lens. So do your experts think the meta lens has any useful application or real products?

Yeah while there is a lot of fascinating research around meta lenses, they're not widely used in commercially-available systems because they're complicated and expensive to make, they can often have worse performance than traditional alternatives, and it can be tricky to integrate them into optical systems currently designed for traditional lenses. Their thin structure is letting them finding some success in VR/AR and microscopy applications where space is limited though

@@edmundoptics many thanks for the reply, as I expected the meta lens is not that promising, I think I better find other topic to work on.

Shouldn't any two filters block all light?

Two filters together will block more light than any single filter, but usually not all visible light (at least for these kinds of color filters). But as you stack more and more different types of filters, you block more and more light until none of it transmits through
