Giving the LaBella White Nylon 760T Tapewound strings a go on my Nate Mendel Precision Bass. These strings are supposed to be brighter and overall clearer than their black nylon counterparts. What do you think?

You have long nails. This will make your tone significantly brighter to a typical finger player

Decisamente diverse dalle Black Nylon. Secondo me sono una bella alternativa alle classiche flat. Ottimo video come sempre!!!!

When you say tone 0%, I'm thrown off bc on J basses, the tone on both pickups at 0% is the mellow tone you have on the P bass at 100%. I'm just confused bc it should be the opposite. 0% should be mellow and dull, and 100% should be bright. Can you elaborate?

I've always found it very arbitrary to be honest, without a clear reason to use one or the other way. My reasoning would be: since the tone is a passive control it can only take away something from your sound without adding anything. So at 0% is not doing anything, whereas at 100% the control is 100% effective. Anyway, you get the idea either way :D

Agreed. But we both figured it out. 😉

@@OliverTobyn I stumbled over the same thing. Since taking out the highs via the tone switch usually requires you to move the tone knob the same direction as the volume knob when you're going from 100% volume to 0% volume, usually people refer to "100% tone" when no frequencies are removed. "100% tone" then means that you hear all the available fequencies.

Much more sizzle in these than I expected. Were you using your nails when plucking fingerstyle? That might explain some of the brightness.

I tried not to use them on some riffs. I did record through a SansAmp VT Bass DI though. It was set on flat except for the amp emulation which probably added a little more brightness to them. But they are still bright nonetheless

Now that was a very nice sound. I read you can keep these forever but with them being actual roundwounds underneath, I doubt that. Maybe give us an update in a year.

I've been using a set of these on my 5 string for a good few months and they haven't corroded at all, although they still become gacked over time which dulls the sound a little.

How is the tension on these? I used some of the LaBella Gold Tapewounds on my acoustic bass to get rid of the string noise form slides. Worked like a charm. But, they made the bass even quieter when not amped up and they were had very little tension, which was off-putting. Great for arthritis, but I dig in a lot and felt like i was going to rip the string out.

Despite the high string gauge, I'd say not so different from a regular 45-105 set

These seemed to have a pretty unique sound, and I liked it. Would love to hear these on a fretless, and does anyone have any info on string life? (Seems like flats lose a bit of treble kinda quickly)
@OliverTobyn

I've had them on since this video, and still kinda sound the same. Though I don't play them that often

I have a set arriving tomorrow that I plan to install to my fretless Pedulla Buzz. I presently have it strung with Low Tension Flats, but would like to hear a little more upper harmonics, but not as much string noise as I get from NPS round wounds. Hoping these will sit in the perfect middle ground between the flats and rounds.

@@prestachuck2867 I usually stick with the Fender flats, (Love the “creamy” kind of tone the heavy’s seem to have) but I just tried out some Diadarrio flats on a fretless, and I don’t like them, too “tinny”. I hate doing that, as we all know bass strings are way more spendy than guitar strings, so it greaves me to make a bad choice when it comes to trying something new in strings.

i don't get it... why do they sound duller with the tone going up?
@carlosjaviermontesbenoit4756
Hi Oliver, would I have to make an adjustment to the nut for the "thicker" gauge of the strings you show? my nut currently rides 45-105 strings, thanks for your feedback!
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn Год назад
I didn't feel the need to do so, also because nylon is more elastic than steel so it adapts easily to the shape of the nut
@jerryabrowne

I think you got the % backwards. They sound like regular roundwounds to me. I'm surprised if the brightness when played finger style.

Thanks for the review! Now a question: did you have to fix the nut to fit in the strings of this gauge or do they fit standard nut?
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! They fit without adjusting or filing the nut. Probably because nylon is softer than steel and adapted to the shape of the nut

@@OliverTobyn Thanks man, that's certainly helpful! I currently have 50-105 black nylon labellas on my PBass and I love them! Was excited to try out their thicker version but wasn't sure about the nut. Now I'm getting a set! Will definitely try out the whites later on.

Have a set of 9 months old on a precision played on daily basis, they lose the brightness after a solid 150/200 hours of playing

@OliverTobyn

It depends on what I'm playing. I do prefer to have them, but not too long (I've broken so many while playing Iron Maiden). But I really like the edge they give to the sound, almost like a pick
