On this edition of The Callout with Candace McDuffie, Candice explains how sci-fi and fantasy has never been all white. She theorizes that White people are afraid of fictional worlds reflecting the real world where racism and inequality exist. Imagine... a world where white people aren't always being centered.

They don’t want to be reminded of what they did and still do. Imagine being a violent bank robber - every bank you visit, you rob it- but you’re constantly reminded of the absolute carnage of your actions every single day on tv and on the streets where it happened, while you spend all the money you “earned” and get mad all the people calling you out for it. But instead of giving the money back and paying for the damages, you “donate” to other banks outside the area while planning to rob them, too, in the future. Not only this, but insist the media only focus on your gardening and art habits, and how lovely you look in designer clothing.

This reminds me of a message board I came across that discussed the exclusion of black characters in the video game, Kingdom Hearts. Someone had brought up that there has never been an original black character in the game w/ the exception of the black characters from the Disney movies. To make it worse, the two biggest villains are darker complected compared to the other characters. Someone commented that there were no black people in this area at this time blah blah blah. Yet some of the characters have magical powers, they can fly, Sora, the main character, has literally been turned into a lion, mermaid,etc…if all of this can happened, black characters can be included. And I love kingdom hearts, I’ve been playing since six grade but that doesn’t excuse the creators from excluding black characters. Another thing I wanted to say is that I do think that some of Hollywood’s “diversity” is performative. I don’t feel like they actually care about POC‘s, I think they just want to seem progressive.

No its not, author has his own reason how he wants to present his story. If asian or a black creator wants to present their own respectable regions in their fantasy as homogeneous that's their business

In regards to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, I do believe that some of the criticism the show is receiving is somewhat valid. Of course the racist backlash towards the actors is totally unacceptable. They’re just actors doing their jobs and they shouldn’t be targets for harassment because it really isn’t their fault. But for others out there who are true die hard fans I think that people should understand this. J.R.R. Tolkien intended Middle Earth to be based on Europe with other cultures like Celtic, Norse and Anglo Saxons. Which is why most of the characters that have been portrayed are mostly white. However Middle Earth has different races based on other real world cultures as well, like the Easterlings of Rhûn in the east, which are based on like lands of Asia and the Southrons of Harad in the south are based on lands in Africa. So there’s definitely POC in middle earth, it’s just how they are portrayed which bugs most fans including myself. Because we could have had expanded upon this and had interesting stories that the books don’t really do, but instead we have sprinkled actors of color with no sense of cultural identity. In comparison with shows that do diversity well like in Game of Thrones. The people in the North are shown to be more white, in comparison to Dorne which is a more hot climate and you see more brownish people. To me it’s fake progression, the creators don’t care about the source material or respect Tolkiens works and creations at all.

Pretty sure Michael Jackson diehard fans intended that Michael Jackson would be portrayed by a black man and I think it's reasonable for people to understand.

Fictional World filled with European Architecture, folkloric creatures, Armor, Weapons, Fashion, Names, Language, History, landscapes, plants, animals, mythology, music, customs etc. The Root: Why is Middle Earth so white?!? Just imagine a Fantasy world based on medieval Japan. (which exist) With Samurais, Ninjas, Asian Dragons, Japanese Style Castles, Katanas, Kitsune, Kappas etc. and they make a movie out of it. Then one of the major characters, a high ranking Samurai, takes of his helmet ot introduce himself to the local lord. Underneath it is an irishman with flaming red hair bound to to the traditional hair bun that only samurais are allowed to wear. Introduces himself in fluent japanese as Akira Nobunaga. Not only would it completely confuse the japanese audience. The asian american community in the US would scream "CULTURAL APPROPRIATION"!!! And the irish laughing their asses off are just like. Oh but it's just fiction! Representation matters! You guys can believe flying magical dragons but not white peole? You guys just don't like irish people. You Racists! PS: I am from Switzerland. Tolkien made a trekking trip through the Swiss Alps in his youth. Which inspired him to write "The Hobbit". You know, the book with dwarves living inside mountains. Elves inside the deep forest. And dragons in mountain caves? Funnily enough that's was Swiss people believed in the middle ages. We just couldn't see them because of their magic or geographical barriers. Americans angrily debating of how our folkloric creatures look like. Is extremely hilarious to me. One of our tales is the story of how a human herdsman marries an elven maiden. If she was black in the story he would run for his life meeting her for the first time. Never even seen a black person in his life.

actually tolkien purposefully excluded celtic from his world. his world was basically stolen from the pagans in europe, and little jebus loving bastard he was, he racialized those epics.

before you go around calling anyone a racist, it would be better if you were defined the word what it means first. And just because you are not included in some thing, when someone says something negative about you, does not make you a racist. Black racism tends to be cloaked in humor. I’ve noticed that. Have you?

Why should a fictional world reflect the real world? You can write one that does, but don't insult and accuse people of anything just because you are jealous and pitiful that not everything includes you. I have fantasy stories with only white people, I have fantasy stories with only Inuit people, I have fantasy stories with only Egyptian people and I could mention others as well, but that's beside the point. If someone creates a fictional world, it is their right to do so without anyone going after them or demanding changes. Everyone is free to make their own stories and if you want an all-black world, then go and create one, other creators made POC stories and they were successful. Perhaps instead of expecting people to change, you could create something new, hm? Oh, wait, you won't, because that would require work, effort, time and creativity. Interestingly nobody had a problem with Mace Windu or Lando and why? Because their race was irrelevant, they didn't make a deal out of it, they were actually good characters and good stories were written for them. Of course, people are annoyed by blackwashing, just like how black people are annoyed by whitewashing. It is hypocrisy if you think one is acceptable and the other is not.

You're so right! These weirdos at the root want blk people to beg whyte writers to put us in stories instead of wanting blk people empowered to tell stories ourselves. I hate the way this channel promotes blk people relying on whyte people for everything. This channel encourages weakness in blk people.

Wow, the mental gymnastics you just did to defend racism is appalling. Of COURSE people had a problem with the black characters in STARS WARS, clearly you live under a rock, or you're choosing to be ignorant. Have you ever stopped to consider what it means if you are an author/artists that wants to create a world without black people or any people of color? That shows DEEP psychological issues when it comes to racism & how they feel about black people in real life. Why do you think it's only a problem for white people? Authors & artists of every other ethnicity have zero problems including white people in their fictional worlds, but white artists' GOAL in creating a fictional world is to create a world with only white people in it. And you need to do some evaluation yourself, if a character's ethnicity cannot be part of their story. Maybe you're white, so you don't (& will never) understand how much your race is essential in telling your whole story truthfully, even as a fictional character.
@dannyknightblade4592
@dannyknightblade4592 Год назад
@@lusciouslipslibra Your mindset is completely wrong. Always begging whyte people to let you be wherever they are at. You even wanna force your way into stories that logically shouldn't feature blk characters. Why would there be a bunch of blk people in a European country hundreds or even thousands of years ago in a story? You're not even being logical because someone like you would get upset over Black Panther being made into a whyte man; but you call for whyte characters to be changed into blk characters. That's being hypocritical.
@lusciouslipslibra
@lusciouslipslibra Год назад
@@dannyknightblade4592 1) Because black people DID exist in Europe at that time, you obviously don't know your history. You can research it yourself, there were even black people in ancient Greece (they called them all Ethiopians at the time) 2) You cannot white wash Black Panther because the entire story, from every angle, is the story of a black man. You cannot change his ethnicity without changing his entire foundation & story. The author did this on purpose so he cannot be whitewashed. This is not the case for most white characters in any genre. Being white is not the basis of the character's identity, so changing their ethnicity does not change the character's story in any way. Iron Fist is the only exception I can think of, he must be a wealthy white man who trains to become a monk, otherwise it messes with the heart of who the character is. 3) Black people don't like it when Hollyhood changes the race of characters either, it's lazy. We are asking for representation with NEW CHARACTERS, so blame that on your white counterparts, not black people.
@dannyknightblade4592
@dannyknightblade4592 Год назад
@@lusciouslipslibra 1. Blk people never made up the majority, or even half of half of people in Europe or Greece. 2. Black Panther was created by two whyte Jewish men. Also, there is more to the character than just race. 3. People like you are not asking for original blk characters; you're asking for copies of whyte characters. I don't blame all blk people for supporting this race swap nonsense. Many blk people don't; but the blk weirdos who get their sense of self worth from fictional blk copies of whyte characters do.
