I can see the value of this practice in protest movements all round the world. If you're used to toyi-toying when on the march you'll have a high level of cardiovascular fitness & will be well prepared if you have to run to escape being kettled.

Toyi-Toyi is a dance from Zimbabwe, the fighters from South Africa who went and fought with ZAPU that brought the dance to South Africa.

This is not right Ive been ANC commando in the art of toyi toyi since age 14 years old. Hhay hhay he singing is the old fashioned toyi toyi although some people still sings this. The new Toyi Toyi was first sang after Chris Hani's death in 1993. Its not Hhay hhay we say hhawu hhawu to someone who is listening it must sound like a dog is barking. Actually it is called (to bark like a Dog). Here are some verses I was taught by one of the celebrated MK soldier who recently died from my mind it goes like this "Bark like a dog wenyamazane(nickname for ANC during apartheid)' its up to the leader singer to sing in english or any other language when leading barking. Singers can sing this for hours without tiring the reason why it is so popular during night vigils before funnerals.I once saw somebody sing this for five hours at the end he said DANKIE MASOSHA IM TIRED. It was amazing he even said the lord prayer OUR FATHER and said amen incredible
